face of all time genuinely
"MISS CONGENIALITY" 2000, dir. Donald Petrie
"The first week of August hangs at the very top of the summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest part of a ferry's wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color."
─ Natalie Babbitt

Being able to draw older people as attractive without reducing or erasing the visual signs of aging, and in fact showing that they're attractive because of those signs, is an artistic skill that should be valued so much more. Honestly, it should earn you an immediate fortune because holy fuck is it a rare commodity. There are so many artists who seem to think attractiveness and aging exist in opposition to each other, so they smooth every wrinkle, erase every crease, and de-age the character until they're basically thirty with silver hair. But when an artist can look at crow's feet, smile lines, weathered skin, deep-set wrinkles, and all the little traces of a life well lived and say, "No, that's what makes them beautiful," that's a level of artistic observation and care I wish we celebrated more often.
GIVE MERYL A GRAMMY!
Meryl Streep has showcased her vocal talent in multiple movies. Meryl and singing is kind of synonymous at this point. But I recently noticed something pretty incredible. I rewatched Ricky and the Flash (yet again) and liked a couple tracks so downloaded them. Listening to them in my car, I came to a realisation. “Ricky’s” singing voice is not Meryl…it’s Ricky.
Now, hear me out.
Close your eyes and listen to Ricky Rendazzo singing. Now try to imagine that this same voice belongs to Dee Dee Allen. Or Madeline Ashton. Or Donna Sheridan. Or Suzanne Vale. Or ANY other of Meryl’s characters.
It doesn’t work.
Listen to ANY Meryl-film soundtrack and try to imagine another Meryl character singing that song. NONE OF THEM WORK.
Why? Because Meryl embodies EVERY SINGLE character in a truly unique way. We know Meryl is known for her talent with accents - but I never realised this is also true of her musical voice. Every single musical-character has a very unique voice, seemingly coming from a character-specific place.
DO YOU KNOW HOW DIFFICULT THAT IS?!
Every. Single. Character. has a UNIQUE voice to the point where you just can’t imagine it belonging to any other of her characters.
Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!
AND GIVE MERYL A GRAMMY!
I cannot stop listening to this song, her voice is stunning and it gives me massive Mirandy vibes!
It’s almost like a breakup/argument between them 🥺
I’d love to write a fic but angst is not my forte.
Don’t come at me for my shit graphic, I draw, I’m not a graphic designer 🤣

Silkwood
1983
Every now and then I remember that I literally did my dissertation for my Film Studies degree on Meryl Streep, I wrote heavily about Miranda Priestly and I’m fairly certain Francesca Johnson too. That’s how deeply ingrained this woman and her characters are in me and have been for over half of my life, I love her.
Would be quite interesting to read again after over 12 years, I really should try to find it.
I found it and reread it! I totally forgot I’d also written about Karen Silkwood, Jane Adler and lots about female strength & sacrifice.
My writing was bloody atrocious back then 🤣 the content wasn’t too bad considering I can waffle on about Meryl until the end of days, but the sentences and structure of the essay? Jeez 🤦♀️
the concept of miriam princhek changing her name to miranda priestly to escape her humble beginnings and adopt a more ‘sophisticated’ persona for the fashion world. the layers. i see you nerdy girl, who embodies nigel’s quote about runway being a shining beacon of hope for the ones without.
