Small Fandom Summer 2026!
For the fourth year in a row now, it's time for Small Fandom Summer! Join me for Small Fandom Summer! It's real easy to play:
Make a fanwork for something that has fewer than 1000 English-language works on AO3
Post it to AO3
And then you've done it! You've made a thing and you've diversified the fandom ecosystem! You're basically a hero.
Q: The fandom I want to create for has more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but the specific pairing I want to write for has fewer than that. Does that count? A: Yes! Q: What if it has more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but, like, just barely? A: Okay! Q: What if it actually has a lot more than 1000 English-language works on AO3, but it still feels small? A: Sure! Q: What if I don't want to post it to AO3? What if I don't even have an AO3 account? Can I post it somewhere else? A: Wherever! Q: What if-- A: Just do a thing, friend. Make a thing. Share the thing. This is not meant to be restrictive; this is meant to be inspirational. Create the fanworks you want to see in the world. Make a stranger happy by appealing to their niche interests. Bring joy.
And if you want to give yourself some silly little Steam-like achievement badges to commemorate your accomplishments, well, you're in luck! I've made a bunch of them right here! You can grab the ones that apply to your work and paste them wherever you like and feel good about what you've done. Here's a few of my favorites:
So you see? This is meant to be silly and fun.
There's nowhere to sign up. There's nothing to commit to. There's zero pressure. You just do it if you do it, and don't if you don't. But if you do want to play (yay!), tag your stuff with #small fandom summer so we can all swoop in and appreciate everyone else's efforts.
Here's to creativity!
Images are white text on a black background with a coloured icon taking up the leftmost third of the image. They are as follows:
Green icon of a magnifying class over a beetle. Who's That Boy? (wrote for a character that previously had no AO3 tag)
Orange icon of a tape measure. Size Matters (wrote the longest fic to date in the fandom)
Grey icon of two women holding hands. Lesbifriends (wrote the first F/F fic in the fandom)
Yellow icon of a smiling face surrounded by hearts. My Special Person (wrote something because you knew that one person who'd appreciate it)
Blue icon of an elephant and a mouse. Lorge and Smol (wrote a crossover between a fandom with more than 1000 works and a small fandom)
Grey icon of handcuffs. Testing the Waters (this had better not awake anything in you)
Yellow icon of two fish approaching a hook. Hooked! (wrote something for the first time and are already planning on writing something else for it)
Green icon of a bag with a leaf on it implying soil or plant food. A Brand-New Bag (wrote for a fandom so small you had to teach AO3 what it was)
π¨48 HOURS LEFT TO SIGN UPπ¨
Considering signing up for the 2026 Temeraire Summer Exchange? Haven't quite gotten a moment to sit down and do your sign up? This is your last call! Sign-ups will close Thursday, June 4 @ 5pm UTC.
So get in there while the getting is good and sign up here!
For more info, our AO3 FAQ page has some guidance on what should go into a sign-up form, and you can consult our original announcement post.
The Temeraire Summer Exchange is back for another year! We're excited to celebrate our small but mighty fandom. This exchange is run on AO3, view the collection profile for all the details and an FAQ, and check out the highlights below:
Schedule:
Sign-Ups Open: May 23 (5pm UTC) Sign-Ups Close: June 4 (5pm UTC) Assignments Sent: by June 9 (5pm UTC) Posting Deadline: August 5 (5pm UTC) Works Revealed: August 8 (5pm UTC) Creators Revealed: August 15 (5pm UTC)
How does this work? The first step is signing up. Sign-ups begin May 23. Once theyβre open, use the sign-up form in the collection before June 4!
You are required to request and offer a minimum of one character or one pairing. You must also select whether you would like to receive or offer art, fanfic, a photomanip, or any combination.
After sign-ups, the participants will be hand-matched to each other based on what they offered and requested and assignments will go out.
Gifts must be posted to the Temeraire Summer 2026 AO3 collection by August 5. They will appear as anonymous gifts for the recipient. Works will be made available to read on August 8, with creator names still hidden. On August 15, all creators will be revealed.
A note on the tagset and nominations: We are using the same tagset as previous years. As this tagset has grown quite robust, we are foregoing a nominations period. If there is a tag youβd like added, please nominate it in the tagset page or message the mods any time before sign-ups close. Sign-ups do not need to have opened for tag nomination.
What are the minimum requirements for participation? For writers, a fic with a minimum of 500 words. For artists, a nice/cleaned sketch on unlined paper. A photomanip/moodboard should be substantially original. Please use your discretion β and reach out to the mod team if you have questions!
If you have any further questions which arenβt answered here or on the AO3 collectionβs FAQ page, please donβt hesitate to reach out! You can send us an ask here, or email [email protected].
Additionally, the Temeraire fandom has an active Discord! Announcements will be posted to Tumblr and Discord concurrently. If youβd like to join, leave a comment or send us an ask or an email and weβll get you a link.
Please note you will need an AO3 account to participate in the exchange.

Hello and welcome!
This blog is for collecting ideas and suggestions for a Temeraire themed pinup calendar! It's still not 100% it'll be a finished calendar at the end, but either way I'll have made some fun fanart :)
You can find my NSFW art on MilkAndBones @ AO3, not going to post any of it here since tumblr doesn't allow it.
he ought to have been certain of it (we have made no plans) - will laurence/edith galman
Day 3 of Temeraire Tracks 2025 is Rarepair. So. So I. You know. I. Okay. You know what I. You understand. This one is actually canon compliant though I prommy there's so much breakup and growing apart but in parallel music here. The fun part is spotting what songs also work for their canonical relationships that don't break up.
The playlist title comes from their last meeting in LoD. "He ought to have been certain of it" is about Woolvey, and "We have made no plans" is about Laurence and Temeraire. And ain't that just the way.
Cover art is Orpheus and Eurydice by Louis Hersent.

Day 2 of Temeraire Tracks 2025 is Character Introspection so I'm sharing my mixtapes for each of the POV characters in with this ring because 1) I like them and I worked on them for a long time and 2) they actually are largely canon compliant imo, and I'm pretty proud of the double meanings present.
Cover art, in order, is: Captain George Duff in the style of Henry Raeburn; View of Constantinople from the churchyard outside the city by Harald Jerichau; View of Dover by Richard Wilson; The Dawn of Love by William Eddy; and Perseus and Andromeda by Frederic Leighton.
Okay I'm gonna talk about the folk songs under a read more.
of the valley - harcourt and lily
Day 1 of Temeraire Tracks 2025 is Dragon and Captain so I chose our beautiful Harcourt and Lily <3 I like to imagine this sort of follows them from Loch Laggan to the Peninsular Wars.
Cover art is Esther by John Everett Millais and lightly edited in Canva.

ANNOUNCING TEMERAIRE TRACKS 2025!
Welcome to the inaugural Temeraire Tracks Fanmix event, designed to share, create, and collect playlists, mixtapes, and fanmixes inspired by our very own beloved dragons (and the humans who hang around them)! This event will run for seven days during the week of September 21st, and each day has an optional theme to inspire any new playlists you may not realize you want. I'm not in charge of you though- listen to the song in your heart, and make whatever playlists speak to you! Post your playlists to the #temerairetracks2025 tag to share during the week and enjoy some new music with your fellow aviators!
FAQs:
"What's a fanmix?" I'm so glad you asked. A fanmix is a playlist inspired by the media (in our case, the book series) that a fandom is centered on! Fanmixes are a tragically dying art in the post-8tracks era, and even if they weren't, there can always be more music to listen to.
"Where do the playlists live?" Whatever streaming service you use for music will work perfectly for your fanmix, though you can also just write a list of songs in text post form.
"Okay, but I have a lot to say about this particular song-" Lyrical analysis of why you chose what song you chose is not required but more than encouraged.
"How will I find other fanmixes?" Anything posted to the #temerairetracks2025 tag will be reblogged here, though the tag will also be an excellent place for viewing.
"What kind of music should I use?" Whatever music you listen to. Historically accurate sea shanties? God speed, soldier! 90s grunge? Absolutely! 70s glam rock? I think Iskierka would like it, and I know that I would! Lofi instrumentals? Original Soundtrack is a prompt for a reason! Playlist made of exclusively Hozier songs? He's the reigning king of fanfiction titles, after all! Genre, form, style is no barrier- make your playlists as you will!
If there are any other questions, feel free to ask. T-minus one month until Temeraire tracks!
T-minus five days!
