then lucas said that mike and dustin coming to his big game was really important to him and yet they chose a campaign over him. he saw them exiting the hellfire club looking like they had an amazing time without him, like they didn't even care that he was there or not. he had no one - not a single person - come to support him. lucas' ambition and efforts to experience a better life is lowkey being punished by his friends.

he's also trying his best with max. he's being so concerned, gentle and understanding with her even though she's evidently been brushing him off for months. he won't give up on her. he offers her the ticket, sees her suffering and expresses his worries but doesn't get angry and push her. he's so patient and understanding.

he’s a busy man and at first he’s using his droids as babysitters while he’s at work. C3PO and R2D2, except they aren’t exactly good at babysitting. R2D2 actively encourages the twins to misbehave and get into trouble while C3PO just anxiously follows after them.

so eventually he decides to hire an actual person because a human being can’t be pulled apart and shut down the way his kids like to do to the nanny droids (they’re too much like him, he thinks sometimes).

the hiring process is extensive. vader isn’t likely to trust just anyone with his babies. so he holds interviews, background checks, etc. sometimes he doesn’t like the person. mostly though its the kids’ decision, how they will sit with him during the interview to see if they’re comfortable with their potential future babysitter. how leia will cross her tiny arms over her chest and scowl at the person or luke will stand up on vader’s thigh and whisper into his mask saying he doesn’t like them. whispering it so quietly so the person doesn’t overhear and get their feelings hurt.

with you though, its different. its immediately different. the children adores you. and you’re good with them. gentle and compassionate and kind. but firm when you need to be. there’s fear when you acknowledge vader but you hold your head up high and look him straight in the eye whenever you do speak.
