Derek has seen this before. Has seen Jackson  wake up with fear and worry, has seen the teen push away anything that smelled like Derek. Shirt, pants, covers, anything. He has even seen Jackson unphased by the sound of Roman crying for a bottle or making his little ‘da’ sounds of attention. He has seen it all. And while he wished he could do something, he  really couldn’t. This wasn’t something a kiss and a gentle ‘I love you’ would fix. No. This wasn’t his fight. And as much as it pained him to lay there,  watching Jackson go through so much pain, he had to just lie there. And suffer through it. Because he had done this. Had driven the Wolf to this state. Derek was to blame for everything. And he couldn’t even fix it this time. He was, for all purposes, useless. He stood up from the bed, settling on the edge as he watched the other look over the baby. This was one of those nights. Where the ghosts of the past haunted them. 

              ❝Jackson.❞

                    every line and curve and contour of the baby's body                     was looked over by the young wolf. still breathing, no                     bumps or bruises or broken bones or flesh wounds.                     just a sleeping baby in a bassinet. shaking hands had                     a firm grip on the side of the structure, holding it in it's                     place as though it were a staple in his reality. this was                     normal --- and it shouldn't be normal. he should be a                     happy person, no traumatic relapses like this.

                    eyes turned -- still blue -- on the source of the voice                     behind him. fangs were making his lips bulge out at                     strange points and making his mouth misshapen. who                     was talking? who was saying his name? derek. that's                     derek saying his name; derek was his mate. he knows                     this already, right? of course.

                    so the beating of his heart doesn't matter because it                     should be skipping anyways. maybe not this fast but                     still ---

                    ❝ everything's ... okay? ❞

                    he should be used to waking up like this ----                     tangled up in sheets that smelled like them,                     face buried in a pillow that's plush and clean                     and cradles him perfectly, next to the man of                     his dreams who should be turning over to see                     him still there and smile one more smile that's                     pure genuine happiness ----- but he isn't.

                    occasionally the young wolf wakes up in a                     state of pure terror, cold sweat covering his                     skin and heart racing out of his chest with the                     strong urge to rip away from the bed in the                      most feral state of mind. purely defensive and                     brought out of fear of his situation and situations                     past. things like withdrawal or waking up with                     no memory of how he'd had a baby.

                    that would be today: waking up to sunshine and                     not knowing how he'd gotten in the bed, or why                     he was laying next to derek. the thoughts in his                     mind were telling him it wasn't real, that it was a                     hallucination, and as he scrambles out of the bed                     and trips over the sheets, green eyes flicker blue                     and sharp fangs start to grow. he looks around                     wildly --- the baby, where is his baby? --- until he                     finds the bassinet and goes to look into it, heart                     still pounding as he peers curiously at the little                     baby inside.

       “You would like a green… shirt?                    Wait, what?”

we honestly had to think and talk about this for a few hoursbecause there were so many answers we could come up withdepending on the mythology based around the elements. i'vedone research on many cultures and been a part of quite a few fandoms that are heavily centered around element-basedcharacter tropes and breaking the stereotypes. it was hard forus to really come to a firm decision but after a really in-depthconversation with jackson and his feelings towards certain" elemental characteristics " it was fairly simple to narrow down.

the answer is water. i know that probably seems just a bitcliched because of jackson's first scene in season two, comingout of the pool like that as a metaphor for rebirth, and becauseof his association with the swim team, and that matt daehlerwas afraid of water and the kanima couldn't swim because ofit, but characteristically, water describes what i've interpretedjackson as the best.

water represents emotion and change. it can be calm and reflective like glass; it can be a violent killer that claims hundredsof lives a year. it's a flexible element that can be manipulated as a solid, a liquid, or a gas, and can be used to both hurt and heal.it can represent freedom to some people, the ability to get outinto the world and explore as a means of travel and transportation.it's unpredictable and misunderstood --- less than ten percent ofthe oceans have been explored by humans -- and it requires timeand effort to learn and explore.

i feel like that best represents jackson because he has been somisunderstood for so long, and is often taken at surface value when there is so much more to him to be learned about if justgiven the time and not placed under a bigoted label and tossedaside to be forgotten.

                    ❝ well, there'a little more to it than                         just being high strung. the only thing                         i'm grateful for is that my scholarship                         isn't sports related because i didn't                         make the team. then again, i'm not                         doing so hot academically either. the                         past few months have not been kind.
