What kind of laptop do you suggest? Apple or PC? Really appreciate your blog by the way!
I would personally suggest a PC only because they can be more affordable. But I guess if you’ve got the means, then I’d leave it up to your preference. (And as a side note, I prefer Windows to Mac because that’s all I’ve ever used and I’m more comfortable with it).

Laptop Case
Laptops are precious. Valuable. Expensive. So it's up to you to make sure it stays in good shape. A laptop case or sleeve is a tremendous investment. It's worth the money do it.
Computer Mouse
Obviously you'll need one of these. Well, not necessarily. If you've got a laptop sometimes the mousepad is easier to use, however it's not a bad idea to have a mouse mouse, if you know what I mean. I prefer the wireless ones, because less wires.
Also a mousepad to go with it. Although, a book would suffice but hey go crazy.
USB Drive
For that extra storage you'll be needing, and is much more reliable than emailing yourself the documents. In any case, a memory stick is a must. They come in the most ridiculous of sizes, so get a size to suit your needs.

Headphones
A definite must in my world.
Ethernet Cord
A reliable connection to the internet is sometimes the only thing that brightens my day.
Well, that and coffee.
Microsoft Office Home & Student
You're gonna need software to write your assignments up on, and make presentations on.
I personally prefer Office to anything else out there, but it is quite expensive. So alternatively you could download the free Open Office software. It's practically the same, so no losses.
Laptop
I would fully recommend a full-sized laptop rather than a notebook or netbook. I own a notebook and it's not the most reliable thing. Anyway, bring what you have at the moment that works for you: whether it be a laptop you've had for years but is still in good condition, or maybe buy a new one (which would definitely be a good investment, trust me on this), or a desktop with a tower and monitor. I only opt for the laptop because they're portable so you can bring them to class to take notes.
Don't forget it's battery charger and the cord that plugs it into the wall. That would suck. Just don't forget anything that came with the computer in its box.
Bookshelf
I don't know about you, but I own so many books, I'd like to bring a bookcase with me this year. Last year, the dorm was supplied with a bookcase so that was alright. However, I did need more space as the year went on. Check to see if your dorm is supplied with a bookcase and shop accordingly.
Or perhaps a smaller one for DVDs is more suited for you. Since I'm both, I'll definitely be taking one of those for all my movies and television shows.

Tools
Unless you're building your IKEA furniture before you move in, bring basic tools for assembly. Maybe you can find a mini toolbox somewhere. In my opinion a hammer and a screwdriver are the most basic and most important tools you should bring. But hey, I've only ever built a bookshelf, and that came with nails and things so I may not be the best person to ask.
Maybe borrow some from your family?
CD Rack
I need one. Not like this one, although it's pretty fancy.
I'd rather have my cds in one place rather than stacked on the floor or desk where they're bound to fall over. On a rack they're neat, they're organized, and less likely to make a mess.
Shoe Rack
If you own a lot of shoes perhaps it would be a good idea to purchase a cheap rack to put them in, and try to fit it in the closet too, out of the way.
Thumb Tacks
For your cork board things, if you decide to buy one. And if your dorm has walls not made of cement blocks, you can use them to hang posters, alternatively.
Desk Chair
Your dorm may already be supplied with a chair. Mine was, but it was low and the ugliest green and as an added plus doubled as a rocking chair. Why, who know why.
It might be a good idea to bring your own, one better for your back.

Seat Cushion
You could always use a pillow or blanket, but hey let's throw this in here for kicks.
So, some dorms will have desk chairs that probably aren't all that great or comfortable to sit on. So something comfy is a good investment.
Door Hooks
Over the door hooks, or adhesive hooks can help keep things out of the way, either in your closet or dorm door. In any case, it would be a good idea for showers if you're using a communal shower that the whole floor has to share. That way you can hang your shower caddy on an over the door hook, and keep things from getting wet on the shower floor.
