Synchronized Spanieling
I am squashed between cockers. I am a spanwich.
something I’ve noticed about Kep, which surprised me bc I always thought it was instinctual, is that he does not know how to dig. never has. he will paw at his bed or the floor when he’s getting ready to sleep, but only ever with one leg at a time. I have never seen him do the left-right-left-right alternating standard digging motion. it’s always left-left-left-left and sometimes he’ll switch to right-right-right-right but never does he alternate feet. it’s also only with bedding, never in the yard. Stellina has always liked to dig ever since she was a puppy (mostly in water but she also has a nice little scrape under my lilac bush she naps in) and Boone was a big digger who made several upsettingly large holes in my yard. I feel like Kep would love digging based on his general penchant for destruction, so maybe it’s a good thing he’s never figured it out.
i really really like this post
does your dog know how to dig?
ohhh yeah
yes but they are nonpracticing
no. my dog is innocent.
Tristan and Guinevere dig for mammals and grubs & stuff. Yvaine and Merlin both dug for roots at least. Galahad didn't.
My big dogs didn't either, except once. We went camping, and in the morning we gave a rare treat, big milkbones. Tessa ate hers. The Bear, very thoughtfully, picked a spot completely not hidden at all and BURIED the thing. I had never seen a dog actually bury anything before. We were laughing ab9ut how unusual the behavior was, and wondering what would happen to the milkbone, when Tessa beelined straight for the buried treat, dug it up, and ate it. [The Bear watched without comment.]
Milkbone counts - Tessa: 2 - The Bear: 0
We didn't think this was fair, so we snuck a second treat to The Bear while Tessa was eating The Bear's hidden treasure. Tessa explained with giant hoond dawg eyes that she was starving and this was a great injustice, so we gave her a second (third!). Tessa ate hers.
The Bear selected another dig site and entrusted her second milkbone to the soil of the campsite. Tessa watched, and as soon as The Bear left, Tess dug it up and ate it.
Milkbone counts - Tessa: 4 - The Bear: 0
We gave up on trying to give a nice treat to The Bear. We ate breakfast (with rapt attention from Tessa and The Bear), packed up, and just before we left, we tried one more time to give a treat to The Bear... plus one for Tessa, because obviously. Tessa ate hers.
...
The Bear picked a third spot and solemnly entombed her milkbone in the cold, cold ground.
Tessa watched from several feet away, and was digging it up as The Bear started to turn away. The Bear continued not to express any approval nor dismay at the looting of her tombs.
Milkbone counts - Tessa: 6 - The Bear: 0
They were both ~2 years old. They lived to be ~13 and ~14; I never saw either dig again. I've also never seen any other dog cover their digging. The Bear always was such a courteous lady. (Tessa is the shorthaired Georgia Roadside Special Hoond and The Bear is the gentle floppy hairbeast; she wore doggles for the sun in later life.)
I apologize for not having lots of new Spaniels pics this week. As an apology, please accept these bouncing dolphins.
[Video Description: several dolphins are leaping repeatedly in a boat's foamy wake. Sound is muted.]

Synchronized Spanieling: An Afternoon At the Window
Gwyn: *mlem* You have treats. How may I extract treats?
Gwyn: I know! Tricks! I got tricks!
I cannot emphasize enough how much Gwyn's modus operandi is "Get in nearest person's face, be cute"
I cannot emphasize enough how effective this is.

She does this every time (slides the TP roll around her lower jaw for easy gripping) (also the meerkat pose)
magical young man
We were watching a movie and some puppy thought my unicorn blanket was for her. "But it's mine?"
Those bright eyes.... we're leaving these storehouses of joy for a week. We'll miss thrm every waking and sleeping moment (how do you sleep without a spaniel lying on you?) Oh, my spaniels of DOOM, I will see you soon!
oh no MY eyes don't need cleaning, thank you anyway
