“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)
it’s such a basic part of the reality of disabled people as a whole but it’s STILL so hard to get ppl to understand that some people will simply die without 24/7 care. their care is not for comfort, it’s not for fun, it’s literally a matter of life and death. “if their care was taken away i’m sure they’d learn to suck it up like the rest of us!” – something ive heard time and time again. no they wouldn’t, they would die. they HAVE died. they continue to die as cuts are made to welfare and health. why is this so impossible for people to grasp.
me: im disabled and have limits

I watched the backrooms. It was pretty good
While neighboring wild reefs experienced bleaching rates as high as 80%, Dr. Nazurally's reefs experienced just as much in survival rates
From the article:
Organizations like the Mauritius Oceanography Institute, and the University of Mauritius, and Odysseo Oceanarium, now work to advance the science of heat-resistant coral breeding, and Nazurally’s success seen last summer is a testament to the progress the country’s marine science community has made. Odysseo has leveraged advancements made worldwide in the science of predicting spawning events to create a program of timing coral reproduction and collecting eggs and sperm from the corals by boat. These are then used to breed corals in protected nurseries, with those coral phenotypes that survive in warmer water being selected to reproduce. A study published by Dr. Nazurally in the summer showed that the hydrozoan genus (similar to coral) Millepora, when bred in this way, showed a 99.8% survival rate during the bleaching, compared to an 88% average rate across all coral genera, and a 10% survival rate for corals bred with previous methods and without a focus on heat-resistance.
After whiplash and supernova lemonade is just.. ok

Quick what are you doing RIGHT now (besides scrolling Tumblr)
also finished re-reading lotr and could be singing praises but there were too many mentions of "people with slanted eyes" being evil and THE EAST threatening THE WEST
