I believe that we have free will. I cannot imagine love without it. And if I cannot imagine love without it, then I cannot imagine a god who is love without it. And this means that God's will can, at least to some degree, be thwarted by free agents. If that's true, how can God make promises?
That's one of many questions that has been in my mind for a while now. But then it hit me, how do I make promises? There are varying degrees promises.
At one end there are promises like those made in marriage, to stay with someone through thick and thin. These are made true in small and large decisions, usually in the moment, as things come. It's not about specific actions; it's about how one will respond to what may come up and the general direction they'll guide themselves in so that the promise may be fulfilled.
At the other end, there are promises about clear, specific actions. Usually, before promising something like this I want to already be able to see the path I'll take to get this promise fulfilled and how likely it is that the path will work. And if I make the promise and that path that I imagined before doesn't work out, I find a new way, possibly sacrificing other, less important things I wanted to accomplish.
If I can make promises with my tiny bit of understanding of what's going on, how much more so can the Creator?
