nancy worrying about/being protective of mike
𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚆𝙾𝙾𝙳𝚂 𝚂𝚄𝚁𝚁𝙾𝚄𝙽𝙳𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙷𝙾𝙿𝙿𝙴𝚁'𝚂 𝙾𝙻𝙳 𝙲𝙰𝙱𝙸𝙽 𝚂𝙷𝙸𝙼𝙼𝙴𝚁𝚂 𝙱𝙴𝙽𝙴𝙰𝚃𝙷 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙻𝙰𝚉𝚈 𝙶𝙾𝙻𝙳 𝙾𝙵 𝙰𝙵𝚃𝙴𝚁𝙽𝙾𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚄𝙽𝙻𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃⸻ heat drapes across the clearing in waves, turning the air thick with pine resin as bark bakes beneath the sun. the old dwelling sits crooked and weatherworn amongst it all, half-swallowed by wilderness, faded boards glowing amber in the light. the atmosphere is earthy and clean and strangely comforting; unlike the weapon locked in her palm. the gun had unsettled her at first touch. it looked too simple to hold such consequence; she remembers the sounds they made in the lab, in corridors, in nightmares. men with unseeing eyes carrying death casually at their hips. she is broken away from grave recollections as a firm hand rests upon her shoulder; what a feeling it still is, to be loved so fiercely. but her admiration for the girl more akin to a sister than friend fades rather fast as the mention of a moving target comes into play.
❛ moh - moving? ❜ she asks, voice shattering with nerves, croaking out in a stuttered mess. IT'S STILL TOO NEW, TOO DIFFICULT. there's no invisible force roaring from her pulse to save everyone at the last second, no certainty of her purpose, only flesh and fear. only being a girl in a dangerous world. perhaps nancy understood that better than anyone. (and if nancy believed in her, then surely she was capable...) ❛ okay. i will try. next. maybe not today? ❜ jane spent so much of her life being studied, controlled— very few simply saw her. mike tried, as did hopper. joyce loved her enough to crack herself open for it. but nancy fully realised jane's deepest terrors without making them smaller, and that mattered most... more than she knew how to express. she just wants to make her proud. ❛ bullets in x. ❜ she confirms her intended act in a whisper, letting it transfer from her head, and form into a physical manifestation.
she inhales slowly, arms already tense and remarkably heavy. the target looks quite small now. what if she could never do this properly? what if, absent of her abilities, she was nothing? the thought twists inside her, haunting each waking moment, and the unconscious ones, too. was she doomed to be forever weak? useless if not sacrificing every inch of herself until she was more machine than girl? she aims, pulls, and stumbles back instantly, heart crashing erratically against her ribs. the shot missed by several feet, and she stares at it in dismay, the recoil jolting painfully through her wrists. ❛ missed. ❜ nothing else needs to be said. with that in mind, she tries again. the following shot cracks through the endless expanse of sky and land. ANOTHER FAIL. the can wobbles violently but remains upright, so she lowers the gun, frustrated, far too hard on herself. ❛ shit! ❜ she's getting impatient, now. (don't let it get to you. try again.)
three minutes pass in weighted silence while she collects her shattered confidence, calms her fidgety fingers and shaky feet. she breathes in, and cold enters her lungs sharp as ice. she adjusts her stance in the fashion nancy taught: grip loose, legs apart, a straight, steady spine. the forest falls silent around them— whispering trees, drifting leaves, and only her heartbeat is heard. jane squeezes the trigger, squinting carefully. the gun roars, and the can launches up and away, spinning wildly off the log before vanishing. shock rushes through janessa so quickly it feels electric. ❛ i hit it, ❜ she mumbles, staring at the empty space where it taunted her mere seconds prior. something warm unfurls inside her; not pride exactly, but relief, a hint of possibility. a gleeful gaze veers to nancy, patient, encouraging, impossibly kind... gratitude hits her so hard it stings.
she stayed after the countless misses, every time giving up seemed like the easiest option, every complaint. NOBODY IN THE LAB TAUGHT HER THAT WAY; NOBODY THERE ALLOWED MISTAKES TO BE MISTAKES. ❛ see that?! i hit it! it's down. ❜ she practically squeals, grin stolen from starlight itself. ❛ i... i think i hit your x! ❜
Catching the hesitation at the suggestion of a moving target, Nancy gave a nod, not wanting to push Jane too hard if she wasn’t ready. “Sure, we can save that for next time.” She’d promised no corrections until the clip was completely emptied for their latest target practice. For their first sessions Nancy would call things out per shot, reminders, encouragement. They were past that stage now, Jane didn’t need Nancy to provide support, she was figuring out how to support herself, something every girl should learn if she wanted to be self-sufficient.
Watching @shadowedvales, Nancy could see the growing frustration after the first miss, practically hear the thoughts invading her mind, debilitating lies fed to the brain, consumed so often that it couldn’t determine what was best for it anymore. The only way to stop the lies was to feed it the opposite, challenge the thoughts, replace them with your own truth. Most people didn’t bother working to better themselves, they just let the pain win, let the bad thoughts block out the light but not Jane. Nancy kept her promise not to intervene, arms folded, fingers digging into her skin from anticipation. Pride sat comfortably in Nancy’s chest when she saw how Jane collected herself. There, you’re in control, nobody else.
Nancy thought back to when she found Jonathan practicing shooting cans in the woods, the only advice offered to her when she took a turn: ‘ point and shoot ’. It felt like so long ago, another life. Here she was, teaching Jane how to shoot better than her brother. Her breath held tight, exhaled the second the next shot hit the X. At the meeting of their gazes Nancy’s expression relaxed into an accomplished smile. “That was a perfect shot, no notes.” Her attention shifted towards the tree stump no longer balancing a can on top of it, palms coming to rest on her hips. “I was watching you the whole time. You corrected your posture, like we talked about. How was it? Did you feel the difference?”
Nancy couldn’t help but smile slightly at Conrad’s language, how openly he answered what could have been a question taken the wrong way. It was refreshing, to say the least. She wasn’t used to talking to guys like @apoprockindajock. Ever since she started hanging out with Steve she’d found herself feeling more confident about approaching people outside of her typical social circle, which wasn’t that much of a circle, more of a squiggly line. Barb would definitely lecture her later if she found out she’d been chatting with another sporty guy. She wasn’t exactly on board with Nancy’s shift in attention.
“Just wondering,” Nancy answered cryptically, holding her workbooks closer to her chest. “You have a point. If you’re gonna compete you might as well aim to win.” In truth, she’d asked to try to understand guys better. Maybe it’d help her figure out more about Steve. Totally not in a ‘I think about this guy way too much’ kind of way … Nancy wasn’t about to admit her true motive, Conrad would probably think she was some kind of desperate virgin or something. “Yeah, bumfuck nowhere really sucks,” she agreed, exhaling an amused breath. “I guess we have different ideas of fun. I’m not into sports that much.” ( continued. )

Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler The Dive, Stranger Things
Grief could be all-consuming, a heavy weight tirelessly pressing down on every part of you. Nancy knew what it felt like to lose someone important. It wasn’t the same, she didn’t love Barb the way @paladinstales loved El but it meant she could relate, at least in some small part, to what he was going through. They hadn’t spoken about what happened that night, not really, not enough. Nancy didn’t want to push Mike too hard if he wasn’t ready. She also couldn’t sit back and watch her brother fade away without doing something. They may not have always had the best relationship, they used to argue a lot over stupid shit, like typical siblings. None of that mattered anymore. What mattered was that Nancy would always be fiercely protective of her brother and she planned to be there, no matter what. She wouldn't disappear just because things were hard.
“Why don’t I stay anyway? I don't have to be anywhere in the morning.” Nancy gave a casual shrug to downplay the gesture. “If you can’t sleep maybe we could hang out.” It’d been a long time since Nancy got directly involved with Mike’s hobbies, especially his campaigns. Mike hadn’t mentioned D&D in a while. If it’d help to distract him, Nancy was willing to do pretty much anything. “Might even be able to get you to eat, that’s sort of my main goal. I’m telling you that so you have a head start to prepare for how annoying I’m gonna be about it.” She took off her jacket, tossing it onto the table alongside her car keys, a clear indicator that Nancy had already made her mind up about staying. ( continued. )
Music blasted through the crowded living room of the house party Nancy let Steve drag her to, laughter and conversations drowned out by all the noise. He’d meant well by bringing Nancy along and as much as she’d tried to force herself to have a good time on the outside, on the inside she was miserable. Every flash of red hair or glasses in the crowd made her feel sick. It was like Barbara was haunting her, everywhere she went. Nancy figured it served her right if she was. It was her fault Barb couldn’t be at this stupid party tonight.
Making some excuse to get out of there, Nancy pushed through the horde of drunk partygoers until she made it outside. The cold air was refreshing, it helped her remember how to breathe. Jumping slightly, Nancy noticed she wasn’t alone. @hawkinsfoster was standing nearby, maybe another escapee from the chaos inside. “Thought I was the only one who needed to get away from whatever’s going on in there.” A roar of cheers and obnoxious chanting drifted from the open back door. Nancy tried not to cringe, shrinking further into the darkness outside. “Do you mind if I stay out here for a while?”

aeron's rolling his eyes : "go on… i'm listening. convince me this disaster isn't somehow connected to you."
White noise was the only thing he heard as his cameras were rebooting. Well, almost the only thing. Nancy Wheeler stood in front of him with a more than sure attitude. The kind he completely hated. Because it offset his. Which annoyed him to the point of yanking her into his apartment. Aeron wasn't used to answering anyone. He'd been alone since he was sixteen. The court thought he was mature enough to handle himself. That was a laughing matter. Acting mature and actually being mature were two different things in his book. If the Mountain Dew cans and Cheetos were anything to go by, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how far from the judge's ruling he was. To trick the court, that was his greatest feat. "I don't need to explain myself." Turning in his seat, he faced his computer. "What are those things anyway? Nothing in the government's databases mentions those things."
@dontretreat
Nancy wasn’t sure if she was walking into a dead end. Usually she could trust her hunches to lead her somewhere but it was hard to listen to her gut when memories of her past haunted her present. She exhaled an irritated breath when Aeron pulled her inside his apartment. He led her towards his computers, pretty good tech, surrounded by the chaotic evidence of the junk food that fuelled his brilliant, if not annoying, mind. “That’s because there’s not supposed to be any.”
She reached into her jacket, retrieving some blurry photos of the creatures in question. Nancy threw them on his desk for him to take a closer look at. Their slender bodies were taller than a human, limbs elongated with sharp claws. They almost looked headless, their flower-shaped faces folded inward, rows of teeth encased in red gums, hidden away until threatened. A few of the photos showed them baring their teeth, faces open. The sight still sent a shiver down her spine, even after all this time. “The thing you saw last night, did it look anything like this?” Nancy needed to know for certain what they were dealing with before she put Aeron's life at risk by revealing the truth of what they were.

When tragedy struck Hawkins, it shouldn’t have come as a shock. After everything with the Upside Down, Nancy thought she’d toughened up over the last few years. In some ways, she had but in others … she was just as afraid as she’d always been. She couldn’t get the latest report out of her head, the update where the investigation finally revealed the victim’s name: Chrissy Cunningham. It made Nancy sick to her stomach. She hadn’t known Chrissy but everyone knew who she was. Queen of Hawkins High, prettiest girl in the year, head cheerleader, dating Jason Carver, seemingly perfect in every way. If there was one thing Nancy had learned, it was that nothing was ever straightforward when it came to unusual deaths in this town and nothing was ever what it appeared to be.
Determined to find out who, or maybe even what, was responsible for Chrissy’s gruesome death, Nancy began her own investigation, without telling anyone else working on the school paper. She didn’t want them asking too many questions, especially about the supposed 'mall fire' that claimed all those lives. Her first lead was to find out more about Chrissy. Naturally, it made sense to track down her friends or those who moved in similar circles. That was what prompted Nancy to dart after former cheerleader, Dottie Kline, at the end of class one morning.
“Dottie, hey!” Nancy called over the bell and the chatter of voices filling into the packed corridor. Nancy wove between students until she caught up to @hawklines. “So I know this might seem like an unusual request,” a bold one, too, considering they’d barely exchanged more than a few words with each other until now, “but do you have a few minutes to talk? It’s - ” glancing over her shoulder to scout for listening ears, Nancy turned back to Dottie, hoping the desperation she felt on the inside wasn’t as obvious on the outside. Her voice lowered, tension setting in her shoulders as they walked, “ - it’s about Chrissy.”

mark if the headcanon is right or wrong
✔ Nancy is very good at walking in platform heels.
She prefers a mid to short heel but she can walk in any type of heel just fine. It took some practicing in her bedroom to master it. Nancy puts a lot of thought and effort into her outfits because she wants to feel pretty and feminine in them. Platform heels don't tend to work with her style, they're a bit too high.
✔ Nancy likes board games, but no one else wants to play with them.
Nancy can get extremely competitive. Unfortunately, because she's so annoying about it, nobody plays Monopoly with her after that one time she took it way too seriously. She got into an argument about how many loans were requested from the bank which she considered cheating. Nancy has joined one of Mike's D&D campaigns, even going so far as to dress up as her character, when she was younger and it wasn't seen as lame to hang out with your baby brother but she hasn't played in a long time. If she let herself, she'd probably enjoy it quite a lot.
✖ Nancy can't sit in a chair properly.
Her parents drilled into her the importance of good manners like sitting up straight, no elbows on the table at dinner, no bad language, all that bullshit that doesn't matter as much as showing love and support to your eldest child. For the most part, Nancy does uphold those good manners and has control over her posture. If she's feeling particularly on edge, she struggles to sit still. Sitting still feels like inaction when she could be doing something productive. She'll lean forward, cross her arms or stand up and pace. Not quite as much as Mike does.
✔ Nancy has chronic nightmares.
Nancy's nightmares started after finding out that Barbara was dead. She hears her screams and sees the demogorgon hunting her, unable to get to her in time. They weren't chronic until after Vecna's vision and invasion of her mind. Since then, the nightmares became more distressing and felt real. It will take her a moment to determine reality when she wakes up. She usually puts on a dim light to try to sleep, she can't relax in total darkness. When Holly is taken and her parents are attacked, her nightmares get increasingly violent. Nancy is too stubborn to take anything to help her sleep. Part of her doesn't want to sleep because she knows the nightmares are waiting but she won't see anyone about it. She doesn't trust doctors to listen to her, especially the ones who smoke and call her sweetheart.
✔ Nancy can beat you up if deserved.
She absolutely could but she chooses not to. Nancy prefers to 'fight back' with sharp words or an unimpressed look that says everything. Physical fights make her roll her eyes, especially when it's guys being stupid, she'd rather rise above it and try to talk things through like an adult. As an officer, she works to diffuse any violent situations as fast as possible without escalation, however, on rare occasions, if she's not given much of a choice, she does have to subdue idiots. Don't underestimate her because of her size, she can, and will, kick ass.

Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler STRANGER THINGS 5 vol.1
Steve’s hands were much bigger than hers. Nancy encouraged him to press down on the cut across her forearm. It happened at work. She lost her balance chasing after a suspect and caught herself on something when she went down. She barely noticed at the time, back on her feet in an instant. As stubborn as ever, Nancy cleaned it up then promptly ignored it, until she started bleeding through her shirt while with @dealtgod for their regularly scheduled night out. “That’s good, keep up the pressure while I wrap it.” Her now stained, white blouse had been shrugged off once the bleeding started, used as a makeshift bandage.
" you’re not at war anymore, you can come home. "
Nancy’s fingers hesitated over the knot she was tying. Steve was one of the few people in her life who saw the truth Nancy kept hidden underneath all that outward poise. She wanted to. God, she wanted to … but it wasn’t that simple. It never was. “I don’t know how, Steve.” There was turbulence in Nancy’s blue eyes when they rose to search his: fear, uncertainty, shame, crashing into each other like the waves of the ocean. “If I let myself slow down, even for a second, or worse, if I stop … ” Her voice caught, like part of her was still fighting it. Steve always had a way of making her feel safe to be vulnerable. Maybe it was the way he looked at her without judgement, maybe it was the familiarity of their friendship, maybe it was just Steve being Steve. Her heart felt heavy with the weight of her confession. “I’m not sure I can keep going after that.”
Some epilogue / post-ending thoughts: I can see how it fits that Nancy might pursue a job in journalism, hunting down truths and wanting justice, with what happened to Barb and the fact she cares a lot about exposing lies and calling out bullshit. The reason I went for her becoming an officer was the additional aspect of protecting those in peril / those who can't protect themselves, again, because of Barb but also because of Holly. It's about taking back some control over her life and being able to handle high-stress situations. After what happens with her experiences at the Hawkins' Post, I think she would feel her hands would be tied often in that field, not only by possible lack of co-operation when dealing with specific subject matters but from her own colleagues not taking her seriously or listening to her ideas. While she's still initially going to be dealing with misogyny in the workplace at Hawkins P.D, she gets shit done and doesn't shy away from hard work. They'd come to respect her for that and see her as 'one of the guys'.
It gives Nancy that feeling of being part of a team she can depend on. There's still going to be instances where her hands are tied but there's room for more pushback and it wouldn't necessarily impact her ability to complete her work to the high standard she holds herself to. She considered becoming a detective, given that it involves using those investigative instincts and noticing details that others may have missed or overlooked. Nancy decides to stay in Hawkins. I don't think she'd move far away after what happens to the family. They might have a complicated relationship but Nancy loves them and would want to be there to support them long-term. Hawkins has this weird hold over her that she can't or maybe doesn't want to escape: leaving would be abandoning where she came from, where she was made into who she is, it'd feel too much like quitting or giving up. Hopper (or Powell) eventually passing the torch for Nancy to become Chief, is proof that she didn't let Hawkins break her and is able to give back and make a difference to a town that has seen so much grief and suffering.

While convenient for their busy schedules, a holocall cannot replace a face-to-face reunion. Brienne’s bright blue eyes catch the curve of her glossy, tinted lips when she sees Nancy, her friend from uni. Inevitably, sight takes a tour of her work outfit, the most noticeable change about her. No heels, no gold adornments, no silk or vibrant colors, she looks the part of a CSF officer. “It suits you,” Brienne chimes a moment later, tepid hands grasping hers for a moment in greeting.
There wasn’t much from Nancy’s old life she wished to hold onto: the glamour and wealth, the pressure placed on her to be what her parents wanted, the fairweather friends who drew close for personal gain. @prvtocol was different, kind and caring, not to serve her own agenda but simply because that was who she was. Nancy hadn’t fully realised it at the time, but Brienne’s friendship helped her to survive the world she once lived in. Even now, when they’d come so far from where they began, Nancy wouldn’t have made it without her support.
The compliment in regards to her uniform brought a soft smile, a sight for her friend’s eyes only as she gently squeezed Brienne’s hands. “You really think so?” Nancy’s chest swelled with pride at the approval before taking a moment to appreciate Brienne’s appearance in turn. “It’s so good to see you in person,” she confessed, “I wish we’d done this sooner but I know it’s not easy with how busy we’ve both become.” Nancy was eager to catch up with her friend, despite remaining in contact over the years. “How've you been? Tell me everything.”
