Simon Snow x Baz Grimm-PitchÂ
[takes place before these boys get together]
Iâm walking back from the Catacombs when I smell it. The smoke. I canât see anything in front of me, but Iâm sure thereâs a fire.
But at Watford? How could this happen in a place where everyone has magic? I donât worry too much, because someone is probably taking care of it with a spell right now. Except, almost everyone is home for Christmas already. I donât leave until tomorrow.
And then I feel it - the sucking. Like everything has gone dry.
And our room is up in flames.
Just our room, though. Itâs probably another one of the Humdrumâs attempts on Snowâs life.
I canât ignore the thumping in my chest, and the surge of anxiety in my stomach. âSnow!â My voice comes out raspy, broken. I try again. âSIMON!â
Itâs everywhere - Iâm completely surrounded. And my magic isnât helping.
The Humdrum mustâve known that my magic feels hot, like static, and that fire is the perfect way to attack me. Iâm trying every spell even remotely related to water that I can remember, but Iâm coming up short.
My body feels like itâs overheating, and I donât know how much time I have before I pass out. Finally, I remember one of Pennyâs water spells and thrust it at the fire spreading across my bed, but it barely helps.
Iâm not strong enough. I canât control it. My magic. Itâs too much.
Iâm beginning to feel lightheaded. No one is at school; I might die up here.
Then I hear someone call my name.
âSIMON!â I yell, even louder than before. âSnow!â Thereâs a chance heâs not up there, but thatâs highly unlikely, compared with the Humdrumâs timing in the past. Besides, Snow was there when I left, scribbling away in a notebook.
I rarely yell, let alone call Snow by his first name. But the words are tumbling off my lips before I can even think. âSimon! Are you up there?â
And then he appears at the window, and my heart drops.
When I step toward the window, the fire on the banister seems to grow faster, as if it knows I want to touch it. I angle myself to see outside without actually touching anything. Thatâs when I see Baz.
His cheeks look flushed, and his black hair is disheveled on the top of his head (and it never is). Heâs yelling something, but all I can make out is my name. He takes a step closer.
Instinctively, I scream, âBaz, no! Youâre flammable!â
So is he, the blithering idiot.
âIâm coming up!â he yells, before running toward the doors.Â
âBAZ! NO - DONâT!âÂ
I know heâs coming up the stairs, even though I can barely hear anything over the hissing and cracking of the fire. I look around at all of my stuff - books, clothes, everything is ruined. Bazâs wardrobe is nearly destroyed.
The door yanks open, and my roommate stands in the doorway, his feet planted firmly in a fighting stance. I immediately try to put out the fire by his feet, but again, I fail.
âBaz,â I say, my voice raspy. âYouâre fucking flammable!â
âIâm not just going to let you die up here, Simon!â
Snow looks at me as if I just spoke a foreign language.
I look him up and down, checking for injuries. His clothes look filthy with soot, and thereâs a black smudge on his right cheek. It looks like one of his pant legs had caught on fire and he used a water spell to put it out. And donât get my started on the mess of hair on his head. âAre you okay?â I ask him.
Snow hesitates, looking me in the eye. The flames around us crackle. He nods before saying, âYeah.â
I try a few spells on the fire, but it just grows more.
âItâs enchanted, or something!â Snow shouts, over the cracking and my attempted spells. âI canât figure it out!â
I sigh, and hold out my hand from the doorway. âSnow, do you trust me?â
Do I trust him? For all I know, Baz could be behind all of this, and his coming up here a trap.
Although, he seems a bit off, like heâs scared.
He takes forever to answer me.
âSnow! Itâs not a fucking math problem!â
Fiercely, he shakes his head, his bronze curls bouncing all over the place. His cheeks are pinker than Iâve ever seen them, probably due to the fire. âYeah. Yeah. I trust you.â
He looks me in the eye, and takes my hand.
His hand is (unbelievably, ridiculously) cold.Â
Before I can ask what his plan is, Baz is spelling a forcefield bubble around us with his wand. Iâve never seen this done before - not even by Penelope. It blows my mind a little.Â
Gripping my hand tightly, Baz leans toward me and whispers, âOkay, donât let go.â
And then he pulls me through the room, and jumps out the window.
I didnât know if that would work. Thank magic it did.
But I wasnât fucking leaving him there.
We float down to the floor. Itâs unbelievable - like the time Baz jumped off the side of the school building to help me with the dragon. But this time is different.
This time, both of my arms are coiled tightly around his torso.
I donât let go until we reach the floor. When we do, Bazâs magic forcefield fades away, and so does the fire. I guess it was enchanted to stay alive and growing as long as I was in the room.
My hands are shaking. It feels like my whole body is. This never happens to me.Â
Baz pushes a strand of black hair out of his eyes, looking me over. âAll right, Snow?â
Taking a long, shaky breath, he meets my eyes and asks, âWhy did you save me?â
Weâre sitting on the grass. His right knee is touching my left knee. Thereâs soot under his chin and a black smudge on his cheek. His blue eyes are pouring into mine.
And no words are leaving my mouth.
Without thinking, I scoop his face into my hands and push my lips onto his.
Iâm fighting fire for a second time.
Baz kisses me, and it takes me a full minute for me to comprehend whatâs happening. Baz is kissing me. Iâm kissing Baz.
And Iâm not pulling away.
I lean into him. And I stop shaking.
I know this doesnât line up with the story (and can vampires feel their hearts?) but I had this idea for Simon and Baz and I had to run with it. Just think of it as an alternate story of how these two dweebs realize theyâre in love with each other. (I love them dearly, if you couldnât tell.)
