In which you’re slowly freezing to death, but find yourself rescued.
You’re absolutely freezing.
You’ve been wandering through the park for hours, trying to climb over the roots of trees and keep out of sight as you desperately try to find shelter and warmth. The temperature has dropped drastically, and while you’ve been able to find brief spots to hunker down, you know you’ll have to rely on a heated building to make it through the night, and the sun is quickly setting with none nearby. You’re able to make it through by hiding beside trees anytime the wind gets too bad, and you’ve made good progress so far.
Your luck’s just about run out though, your heart sinking as you watch thick snowflake clumps begin to descend from the sky. All it would take is two or three of them to drench you, and that’s the last thing you need right now. You’re already trembling in the cold as your tiny body struggles to keep you warm, and all you can do is watch as the snow quickly falls and begins to cover the ground. The nearest building is still so far away, and you know at this rate you wouldn’t make it dry. The risk of being wet and hit by a gust of wind is too high to consider moving anywhere else right now.
At this point, all you can do is dart to the closest tree and huddle in the roots, hoping that maybe it will be a short bit of snow, that it might not stick, or it won’t be too high if it does. All of these hopes are dashed, however, as the snow continues to fall, and you’re helpless to do anything but watch.
It begins to build up on the ground, and your trembling becomes full-on shaking as the cold nips at you more and more. You can’t feel your fingers or toes, and you’re now seriously concerned about frostbite.
As the snow covers the ground in white, your dark clothes begin to stick out a bit more as it piles up around you. All you can do now is curl up, close your eyes, and hope this isn’t the end for you.
It’s then that you hear it. The sound of footsteps effortlessly passing over the snow and thudding on the ground catches your attention rapidly, and your eyes are opened widely as you try to seek its source. Off in the distance, you see the massive shape of a human wandering through, their boots massive and perhaps slightly overkill for the weather from their perspective. They’re also wearing a thick trenchcoat, and you can’t help but envy their size and protection from the weather.
Part of you knows you’re not supposed to be seen, that doing so could be a death trap, but part of you also knows that this massive human could present a slim chance of survival if you get their attention. You’re conflicted, but you don’t have to think about it for real long before the decision is made for you.
The footsteps pause briefly, and you see their gaze shift. Slowly, the footsteps draw closer and closer, clearly headed in your direction now as the human sees you. You can tell they’re surprised, but past that you can’t see if it’s a positive or negative surprise. The thudding sounds are upon you now, and you look up to see curious eyes locked onto you.
“I didn’t think… could you be…?”
You watch them reach their fingers out toward you, and you instinctively recoil and crawl back as far as you can against the tree, using the last of your energy to do so. Watching them gasp as they realize you’re moving, you feel relief as their hand then pulls back.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay, I’m not gonna hurt you. I thought I’d heard rumors of tiny people, but I wasn’t sure if they were true or not.” You watch them shake their head. “That doesn’t matter, you need help.”
You can’t muster any kind of response, instead you continue to stare at them and wait to see what happens next. You watch and cry out softly, the only thing you can do, as they remove gloves from their large hands, reaching toward you to scoop your tiny, trembling body from the dirt and snow.
“Shh, come here, it’s okay.”
You know you should be absolutely terrified, that your fate is sealed, but the moment you feel the warmth of their skin, their massive fingers enveloping you, all of your worries are tossed aside as you immediately nestle against them, soaking up as much of that warmth as you can. You hear a soft chuckle as you’re gently wrapped up in those hands, their thumbs rubbing into you to heat you up more quickly.
“You’re not going to last out here much longer like this, I can take you somewhere warm and safe for the night so you don’t freeze to death.”
At this point, you have no energy to fight the elements on your own, so you just weakly nod your head and snuggle against their palms, greedily taking advantage of their offer.
“Okay, good, my place isn’t too far away from here.”
They stand to their feet, and you’re relieved they have you so secure in their hands, with no way to even try to look down. All you can pay attention to is their kind eyes as they watch you make yourself at home in their hands, a smile of wonder on their face.
“You’re gonna be alright, I’ve got you.”
You nod your head, feeling your hands and feet begin to warm back up. You’re still trembling, but at least you don’t have to worry about frostbite anymore. You’ll take the small victories for now and worry about the bigger problem later, when you’re not on death’s doorstep.
Despite the danger of the situation you’re in, you find yourself feeling more comfortable the longer you’re curled up in their hands, their thumbs softly massaging more warmth into you. It’s oddly soothing, despite coming from such a dangerous being. You're definitely not about to complain.
It’s a short walk back to their home, no more than another five or so minutes. By the time you arrive, the weather’s taken a turn for the worse, with strong winds and increased snowfall. You’re well aware that you would have perished if this human hadn’t seen you.
Thankfully, it’s not a concern anymore as they carefully scoot you into one hand briefly. You hear the sound of jangling keys, a door being unlocked and opened, then closed again. Immediately you feel warmth in the air and smell a hint of cinnamon and spice. You’re carefully rested onto a small table by the door, immediately curling in on the hard surface as you watch them take off their trench coat.
“Here we are, how are you holding up?”
You wave your hand in a ‘so-so’ gesture, still feeling cold but no longer freezing to death.
“Alright, well let’s get you out of that jacket then, that should make it easier to warm you up.”
You nod, shuddering as you slowly pull the sleeves of your own jacket off, tossing it in front of you. You shiver briefly, but you’re now much more exposed to the skin of their hands as they scoop you up, and you’re cupped in them once more.
You feel movement as they wander toward the living room, sitting down slowly on the couch and smiling softly at you. They start to gently rub their thumbs against you again, the tension in your tiny muscles begins to release, and you find yourself melting in their hands as the warmth seeps in.
“There we go, you’re gonna be alright.”
You nod your head, exhaustion taking hold of you as you’re lulled into a state of deep relaxation. Your eyes close, and you let yourself give into the urge to let go, to completely put your trust in the hands of this human. For some reason, you feel entirely safe with them, and with that in mind, you let yourself fall asleep.
