New interview with Hideaki Mizota, director of Kill la Kill the Game: IF, from Anime News Network.

Some key points:

✄ Satsuki is the main character of the story mode because this is what Kazuki Nakashima, the lead scriptwriter for the anime, wanted for the game.

✄ Mizota compares Gamagoori’s playstyle to that of Raven from the Guilty Gear series, as both characters gain strength when they take damage. He notes, “That kind of character runs the risk of becoming too powerful, so in order to level it out we have to ensure that they can’t power up all the time. When you play as this character you have to be prepared to take risks in order to make use of the power-ups. Just keeping this balance was the challenge.”

✄ The developers want to add more inconsistent animation to the game—both to make the gaming experience “more fun and different” and to more closely match the TV series. Mizota says that the game is currently “too consistent” in regards to animation quality, adding that the team got “too serious.” Notably, Kill la Kill director Hiroyuki Imaishi states directly in the first “Making Documentary” for the anime that the gags in the show are deliberately animated choppily to show that they are indeed gags and not meant to be taken seriously; in fact, Imaishi even redrew one of Mako’s “Mako Theater” moments because there was “too much movement,” writing a note of “sorry” to the animator who had originally done the work!

✄ APLUS did all the 3D modeling for the game, though people from Sanzigen, who created many of the 3D scenes in the anime, are supervisors on IF.

✄ The game will play at 60 frames per second, averaging 15 drawings per second.

✄ Mizota claims that IF is 80-90% influenced by Guilty Gear. Members of the Guilty Gear team are also working on the game.

✄ The team did also look at the Naruto 3D fighting games for inspiration.

✄ Mizota—who is from APLUS Games—directly acknowledges the shortcomings of Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time. He stresses that Arc System Works was not at all involved in the making of that game, as it was published by Bandai Namco instead. He says:

They [Bandai Namco] wanted treasure hunting, adventures, building the school… There was a lot being crammed in. It was very time-consuming and we eventually ran out of time. It eventually led to the game having, like you say, some concerns. As far as the fans were concerned, you could see the love for the original anime, but the game itself wasn’t so great.

We learned from that experience, so this time we’ve been very selective about what to put in the game and what to leave out. I think that things came out pretty well this time.

✄ The idea of the verbal battles came from Takeshi Yamanaka from Arc System Works. There were three different versions of this mechanic before the current system.
