Thor had many times wondered what his soulmate would be like. Of course, it would be someone worthy of ruling Asgard alongside him. A valiant and strong warrior maybe. Or perhaps a scholar. Someone who would be brilliant, outstanding, and still give him space to shine.
Odin had told him that he would meet them when the time was right. That the two souls would surely find each other when the Norns so decided. The Allfather was very vague in his advice. Rarely helpful. Yet still with an air of authority so strict you'd be foolish not to listen. Though as a child that didn't seem to deter Thor from daydreaming, weaving new tapestries from the threads of his imagination.
The God of Mischief
Unlike his brother, Loki was more apprehensive about the idea of soulmates. The idea of fate deciding who would be your perfect match. The other half of your heart. What was to say if the fates made a mistake? What made them so certain that their pairings would be fruitful?
And anyways, the princes were told by their mother to not share their marks with anybody. It was something sacred. How would you then know who was your soulmate? You'd just know. Whatever that means.
The Winter Soldier
Bucky had grown up surrounded by dames. Of course Mister Barnes was very popular with the ladies, never without a date on his arm to a party. Although he had many times thought about what it'd be like to finally meet his soulmate, he had always been more laid-back, choosing to enjoy his life to the fullest until that fateful day.
Captain America
Steve was never quite as lucky in love as his best friend. It didn't matter though. His mother, Sarah had told him all about the beauty of a soulmate. Someone made for you. Two individuals handpicked by fate, or gods, or whatever divine spirits could even fathom such a phenomenon. She had always reassured him that whoever his person was, they'd love him the way he is. Regardless of his stature, his health, or anything else that may have had the chance of scaring away another suitor in such a time.
Doctor Banner
Bruce was never sure he wanted a soulmate. How would that person feel once they truly saw him? He wasn't built for love. His father made damn well sure of that. The incident that turned him into the Hulk only cemented what was already fact in Bruce's head. Something that destructive could never have a soulmate. Could never deserve a soulmate.
Iron Man
Tony Stark wasn't made for stability, for domesticity. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, Tony Stark had spent his whole life trying his best to ignore his soul mark. He wanted to have fun, to not be tied down. At least, that was the reason he told himself, and Rhodey. There was always a small part of him that was scared. Scared that whoever was on the other side of that bond wouldn’t want him. Scared that he wouldn’t be able to give them what they want. Not that he would admit that to anyone.
The kidnapping in Afghanistan had put a lot of things in perspective for Tony Stark. His soulmate was one of those things.
Given everything that had happened, he decided that he wanted to look for his so-called ‘other half’, if only to see what could be. Of course, there’s no telling what would happen, and that’s only if he managed to find them. But what's the harm in trying, right? After all, he'd come this far, been through so much.
Hawkeye
Clint Barton never really paid much attention to his mark. His mother had just said "You'll meet them when the time is right. No point in rushing it."
They had more important things to worry about anyways. Finding their next meal. Or rather, finding something to steal to pay for their next meal.
Black Widow
Yelena had always said that Natasha's mark was "cool". It meant her big sister was bound to have someone to love and cherish, who would return the feelings in full. In the beginning, Natasha agreed with her sister.
In HYDRA, a soulmark was a target. Having someone you care about was a liability. That was something Natasha couldn't afford. Hiding the mark or somehow getting rid of it were her only options.
Naia
[Name] had never really understood the gravity of the marks on her forearm. When Logan had first found her and taken her in he wasn't sure either. Sure, there had been cases of people having two soul marks, maybe even three, but eight? Surely it was some kind of fluke.
The first time someone commented on the marks adorning his little girl's arm, Logan was lost. He didn't know what to do. He was angry that people could say such vile things about a child. He was scared. Scared for his child. Scared that she'd grow up alone, isolated. It was bad enough being a mutant in society. She didn't need this.
The first time someone had commented on the marks to [Name]'s face, at least once she was old enough to understand, she was eleven. "If by some miracle that many of them get along with one another they'd probably just end up passing her around like a blunt." Jean had ended up consoling the poor girl when she had refused to come out of her room. That was when [Name] started covering up her marks.
I mean, they were right, right? Everything was up to chance. And fate wasn't usually kind. She likely wouldn't meet all of them. There was even a slim chance she wouldn't meet any of them. If she did meet them, would they get along? Would the circumstances be right? Would the others get along with each other? What would she do if they didn't? Would she have to choose?
series synopsis; The majority of the population have soul-marks. A symbol or occasionally even a name tying you to another individual. [Name] has gone through life with eight. Eight symbols trailing up her left forearm, as opposed to the one that most people have sitting solitary at their wrists. Jean had always told her it was just more people to be loved by. But what if none of them did? What if she never even found a single one of them? Maybe, just maybe, she'd get lucky, and not only would she find them, but they'd all love her as she'd hoped to love them.

“Y/n.” Fury’s voice cut through the silence of her apartment.
“Should I be concerned that you’re calling me this late at night?” She answered, voice bleary with exhaustion.
“Yes. This is about the Avengers Initiative.”
She paused before answering, "I thought you scrapped that? Also, I told you I didn't see why you thought I'd be a good fit for something like that in the first place-"
"The tesseract has been taken. Barton and Selvig have been compromised."
"That energy thing? What do you mean compromised?"
"Loki has stolen the tesseract, an incomprehensible energy source. I cannot even begin to explain the dangers of such an artifact falling into the hands of someone like him . He had this spear, when he touched it to their chests it seemed to brainwash them into being his minions. I need you back here, Howlett. All hands on deck."
"That's a lot to process, you can't just dump this-"
"Agent Coulson will be there to pick you up in five"
"Fury, you- he hung up." She drooped against her couch, savoring the last few moments of peace she'd get for a while, before dragging herself to the bedroom to change.
Phil had picked her up from her apartment, just like Fury said. He didn't mention it would be in a helicopter that would be landing on the roof of the complex.
"We're gonna have to make a pit stop before I bring you to the helicarrier." Phil stated, not looking up from his tablet.
"For what?"
"We need to pick up Stark. Romanoff's picking up the big guy."
"Who?"
Kolkata, India
"Should've got paid upfront, Banner." Bruce mutters under his breath.
"You know, for a man who's supposed to be avoiding stress, you picked a hell of a place to settle."
Bruce turned around to look for the source of the voice. "Avoiding stress isn't the secret."
"Then what is it? Yoga?" The woman asked, tilting her chin with a sly smile.
"You brought me to the edge of the city… smart." Bruce said, looking out the window slowly.
"I assume the whole place is surrounded."
"Just you and me," the woman said, taking her shawl off.
"And your actress buddy?" He pointed out the window, raising his brow in question, "Is she a spy too? They start that young?"
"I did." The woman replies after a pause.
"Who are you?"
"Natasha Romanoff." She supplies,
Bruce looks down, wringing his fingers, unsure of how to move forward, before eventually settling on: "Are you here to kill me, Miss Romanoff?", He asks, looking up at her, "Because that's not going to work out for everyone."
"No, of course not. I'm here on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D." She responds, walking closer to him.
"S.H.I.E.L.D." He repeats. "How'd they find me?"
We never lost you doctor. We've simply kept our distance. Even helped keep some other interested parties off your scent" She adds, almost like an attempt to get him to trust her.
"Why?"
"Nick Fury seems to trust you." She answers, "But now we need you to come in."
"What if I say no?"
"I'll persuade you." She smiles, saccharine, like a devil in disguise.
"And what if the…" A pause, "other guy says no?" He meets her eyes.
"You've been more than a year without an incident, I don't think you want to break that streak." She says, rounding the table.
"Well I don't always get what I want." He replies, moving to push a wooden cradle in the middle of the room.
"Doctor, we're facing a potential global catastrophe."
Bruce chuckles, "Well, those I actively try to avoid."
"This," Natasha says, holding out her phone, before sliding it over the table to him, "is the Tesseract. It has the potential energy to wipe out the planet."
"Bruce takes his glasses out of his jacket pocket before responding, "What does Fury want me to do, swallow it?" He says, confusion written clearly on his face.
"He wants you to find it." She leans over the table, "It's been taken. It emits a gamma signature that's too weak for us to trace. There's no one that knows gamma radiation like you do." She looks up at him, almost genuine. "If there was, that's where I'd be."
"So Fury isn't after the monster?" He asks, taking his glasses off.
"Not that he's told me."
"And he tells you everything?"
"Talk to Fury. He needs you on this."
"He needs me in a cage?" He asks, looking down.
"No one's gonna put you in a-"
"STOP LYING TO ME!" He yells, slamming his hands down on the table. Natasha pulls out a gun from under the table, pointing at him, before he backs away, returning to his shy demeanor, "I'm sorry… that was mean. I just wanted to see what you'd do." His hands were held out in front of him, in a placating manner. "Why don't we do this the easy way where you don't use that, and the other guy doesn't make a mess, okay? Natasha?"
Natasha finally begins to waver, lowering the gun before speaking into a wire, "Stand down. We're good here."
"'Just you and me'? Huh?"
Natasha pauses, looking down, before her face contorts into something more unsure. "Fury told me he found your soulmate."
The silence is almost deafening. This was the longest Dr. Bruce Banner had held eye contact with her throughout this interaction. "Look, I don't know for sure, but I sincerely doubt he'd lie about something like that."
"What makes you think I want to meet my soulmate?"
"Just an assumption." She shrugs. "Doesn't everyone?"
Then more quietly, he adds, "What makes you think they'd want to meet me? You know, assuming they saw the other guy on the news." He looks even more timid than before, if that was possible.
"Only one way to find out, right?"
Bruce wasn't so sure he wanted to find out.
New York, USA
The sound of fists against the weighted punching bag echoed through the gym, unrelenting. Steve was lost in his thoughts, memories, thinking of everything that went wrong. Taking his frustrations out on the punching bag, it eventually flew off the chain and straight onto the floor. Steve panted, catching his breath, before turning on his heel and picking up a new sandbag off the floor, dragging it towards the beam before hooking it up.
"Trouble sleeping?" Fury's booming voice reverberated through the gym, interrupting the sounds of fists on leather that had since resumed.
"I slept for seventy years, Sir. I think I've had my fill." He replies curtly, before resuming his attack on the sandbag yet again.
"Then you should be out, celebrating, seeing the world." Fury said, walking over to the soldier.
Steve halted, before stepping away from the bag, beginning to unravel the wraps around his hands. Fury followed him, as Steve started, "When I went under, the world was at war. I wake up, they say we won. They didn't way what we lost." He finished, still out of breath.
"We've made some mistakes along the way. Some, very recently"
"You here with a mission, Sir?" Steve asks, looking up.
"I am."
"Trying to get me back in the world?"
"Trying to save it." He answers, holding out a file. Steve looks up, taken aback, before taking a look at the file. 'Tesseract', it was labeled.
"Hydra's secret weapon." Steve supplied.
"Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you." Fury went on as Steve continued to look through the folder. "He thought what we think. The Tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That's something the world sorely needs."
"Who took it from you?" Steve asks, handing the file back to the man.
"He's called Loki. He's… not from around here." He answers. "There's a lot we'll have to bring you up to speed on if you're in. The world has gotten even stranger than you already know."
"At this point I doubt anything would surprise me." Steve chuckles, standing up.
"Ten bucks says you're wrong." Fury replies blankly, before adding, "There's a debriefing packet waiting for you back at your apartment. He continues as Steve walks away, sandbag over his shoulder and duffel in the other hand, "Is there anything you can tell us about the Tesseract that we ought to know now?"
"You should'a left it in the ocean" Steve says, a dark expression on his face, not turning around to look at the director.
JARVIS' voice cuts through the background thrum of Tony's suit. "Sir, Agent Coulson of SHIELD is on the line."
"I'm not in. I'm actually out."
"Sir, he's insisting."
"Grow a spine, Jarvis."
"Sir, the telephone. I'm afraid my protocols are being overwritten.
Phil's voice comes out of the speaker, "Stark, we need to talk."
Tony picks up the phone. “You have reached the life model decoy of Tony Stark, please leave a message.”
“This is urgent.”
“Then leave it urgently.”
The elevator door opens and Coulson enters, followed by someone else.
“Security breach. That’s on you.” Tony points at Dum-E.
“Oh, [Name]. Coulson didn’t tell me you were coming too.”
She smiles, amused and exhausted at the same time.
“Mr Stark,” Phil says, reaching out to hand him a manilla folder. “We need you to look this over. Soon as possible.”
“I don't like being handed things.”
“Well that’s fine,” [Name] takes the file from Coulson and walks over to one of the tables. “I’ll leave it here you can pick it up yourself.”
Tony pauses to look at her before turning back to Phil. “Official consulting hours are between eight and five every other Thursday.”
“This isn’t a consultation.”
“Is this about the Avengers then? I thought the Avengers Initiative was scrapped. And I didn't even qualify. Apparently I'm volatile, self-obsessed, don't play well with others.
Phil’s voice remains stoic “This isn't about personality profiles anymore.”
Tony walks over and a USB included in the file, turning it around in his hand before plugging it in to one of his own computers. “This is uh…” He looks up, taking in the different profiles on the holographic screen floating in front of him. Images appear of Captain America in action, the Hulk attacking the army at Culver University, Thor fighting the Destroyer in New Mexico, and more. “This.
The thrum of the aircraft engine played in the background. Fury had sent an 'Agent Coulson' to pick up Steve for this mission. He'd seemed to be a decent man. Somewhat rigid. Until the air travel. Then he started to seem more like an excited kid.
"So this Doctor Banner was trying to replicate the serum they used on me?" Steve asked, peeling his eyes from the tablet in his hands to look up at Agent Coulson.
"A lot of people were." Coulson responded after stepping over to grab one of the handholds on the aircraft ceiling. He continued, "You were the world's first superhero. Banner thought gamma radiation might hold the key to unlocking Erskine's original formula."
"Didn't really go his way, did it?" Steve commented, finding it hard to peel his eyes off the green monster on the screen.
"Not so much." Coulson paused, before adding, "When he's not that thing though, the guy's like a Stephen Hawking."
"…He's like a… smart person." Coulson explained awkwardly, nodding, noting the look of sheer confusion on Steve's face, before adding, "I gotta say, it's an honor to meet you, officially."
Steve could only smile in response. For once, the agent seemed to emulate the mirth of a child, just excited to meet his favorite superhero.
"I've sort of met you. I mean- I watched you, while you were sleeping."
Okay… well that suddenly took a strange turn. Steve looked away. Steve stood up from his seat and walked over to the cockpit as Coulson tried (keyword: tried.) to make up for that painful blunder."I mean, I was- I was present, while you were unconscious from the ice."
Coulson finally did seem to somewhat manage to compose himself before following Steve to the cockpit and mirroring the Captain's posture. "You know, it's really- it's just a- just a huge honor to have you on board this…"
"Well, I hope I'm the man for the job." Steve said earnestly, watching the skyline through the cockpit's windshield.
"Oh you are." Coulson's enthusiasm had not ebbed one bit. "Absolutely. Um, we made some modifications to the uniform. I had a little design input."
"The uniform?" Steve turned to look at Coulson for the first time since Coulson had first mentioned 'watching him while he slept'. "Aren't the stars and stripes a little…" looking for the word, Steve settled on, " old-fashioned?"
"With everything that's happening," Coulson smiled, "The things that are about to come to light, people might just need a little old-fashioned."
And for the first time since he'd come out of the ice, Steve felt like he might have something valuable to offer in this new modern era.
Loki watched on as his newly acquired minions toiled, before the Tesseract brought him to Sanctuary.
"The Chitauri grow restless." Other warned him.
"Let them gird themselves." Loki replied. "I will lead them in a glorious battle."
"Battle?" Other asked, "Against the meager might of Earth?"
"Glorious, not lengthy." Loki replied, a haughty expression adorning his face. "If your force is as formidable as you claim."
"You question us?" Other responds, outraged. "You question him, he who put the scepter in your hand? Who gave you ancient knowledge and new purpose when you were cast out, defeated?"
"I was a king! The rightful king of Asgard, betrayed."
"Your ambition is little and born of childish need. We look beyond the Earth to the greater worlds the Tesseract will unveil."
"You don't have the Tesseract yet." Other rushes toward Loki, who only continues calmly, almost goading him, "I don't threaten. But until I open the doors, until your force is mine to command, you are but words."
"You will have your war, Asgardian. If you fail, if the Tesseract is kept from us,", Other begins to circle Loki, "there will be no realm, no barren moon, no crevice where he cannot find you. You think you know pain? He will make you long for something as sweet as pain."
Loki's eyes begin to fill with almost imperceptible tears just as Other sends his consciousness back to Earth.
The aircraft carrying Coulson and Steve lands on the helicarrier.
"…stow the Captain's gear."
"Yes, sir."
Steve is too busy looking around, taking in the industrial scenery to notice two women walking up to him. "Agents Romanoff and Howlett, Captain Rogers." Coulson introduces.
"Ma'am." He nods to [Name], before greeting Natasha beside her.
Natasha only lets out a clipped and uninterested "Hi." in response before turning directly to Phil, "They need you on the bridge. They're starting the face-trace."
"See you there." Coulson walks off, confident posture leaving behind the excited little boy that Steve had spoken to on the aircraft.
"It was quite the buzz around here, finding you in the ice." Agent Romanoff begins to make small talk with Steve as the two guide him.
"Thought Coulson was gonna swoon." [Name] added, making Steve's lip curl upward.
Natasha doubled down, adding, "Did he ask you to sign his Captain America trading cards yet?"
"Trading cards?" Now the Captain was looking unabashedly amused.
"They're vintage. He's very proud." [Name] added earnestly.
"Doctor Banner." Steve called out, noticing the visibly lost man stumbling around. The same face he had seen on that screen, though now more weary and skittish.
"Oh.. yeah, hi." Bruce greeted, a bit awkwardly. He lifted his hand to meet the Captain's which was extended out for a handshake. "They told me you'd be coming."
"Word is you can find the cube."
"Is that the.. only word on me?" Bruce asked, eyes darting around, like a scared animal.
"Only word I care about." Steve nodded.
Bruce nodded, unsure what to say, yet feeling the tiniest bit reassured. "It must be strange for you… all of this." Bruce gestured around with his hands, small smile on his face, trying to reassure the man who had reassured him.
"Well, this is actually kind of familiar." Steve responded, watching as a group of men in sweats ran by in a block formation.
"Gentlemen, you may want to step inside in a minute." Natasha's voice cut through as she stepped between them. "It's gonna get a little hard to breathe."
An announcement rang out faintly, Flight crew, secure the deck.
The landing strip began to rise out of the water, the loud sounds of the jets cutting through the noise on deck.
"Is this a submarine?" Rogers asked furtively.
"Really?" Banner was more exasperated than anything. "They want me in a submerged, pressurized, metal container?"
The two men walked over to the edge to watch the jets rise and lift the helicarrier out of the water, as Natasha and [Name] stood back.
"No, no, this is much worse." Banner said, voice barely audible over the jets. [Name] liked him already.
Doctor Banner and Captain Rogers followed [Name] and Natasha into the foyer. Agents moved around with practiced ease, screens fired up everywhere you looked, sleek metal lining the interior of the ship. Steve walked around, taking in the environment. Bruce was more tentative, walking around carefully as though he might set off a landmine, looking, not to take in aesthetics, but to scan for threats. The ship then began to almost disappear from the outside.
"Gentleman." Fury walked over to greet the two. Steve walked up to him wordlessly and handed the director a slightly crumpled ten dollar bill before walking past to look at the many screens.
"Doctor, thank you for coming." Fury extended a hand to Bruce, an uncommon smile on his face.
"Thanks for asking nicely." Bruce took his hand, not as enthusiastically. "So uh, how long am I staying?"
"Once we get our hands on the Tesseract, you're in the wind." Fury reassured him.
"And where are you with that?"
"We're sweeping every wirelessly accessible camera on the planet." Agent Coulson chimed in. "Cell phones, laptops… if it's connected to a satellite, it's eyes and ears for us."
"It's still not gonna find them in time." Natasha added, letting her worry slip through her stoic facade.
"You have to narrow your field." Bruce said, "How many spectrometers do you have access to?"
"How many are there?" Fury asked, crossing his arms.
"Call every lab you know, tell them to put the spectrometers on the roof and calibrate them for gamma rays. I'll rough out a tracking algorithm, basic cluster recognition. At least we could rule out a few places. Do you have somewhere for me to work."
Suddenly the only thought going through [Name]'s brain was, have to find Hank, get him to teach me some physics so I can flirt with this unfairly cute nerd.
"Agent Howlett, could you show Doctor Banner to his laboratory please?" Broken out of her not-so-professional thoughts, she quickly nodded, before leading Bruce to the lab.
Orchestra music played in the background. The clicks of Loki's 'cane' echoed faintly against the marble floors, the sound covered by the chatter of guests. The curator giving the speech was suddenly very un-elegantly whacked by said cane before the man fell to the ground. The music halted. People gasped, backed away. Loki then shoved one of the crowd –scientist Heinrich Schäfer– back before flipping him onto a marble statue on his back. Truly no regard for gala etiquette. He then takes a device, and holds it above Schäfer's left eye, while Hawkeye uses a similar device elsewhere to mirror the man's biometric information. The crowd flees, unsystematically, running into each other, tripping over long hems, shoving others into marble pillars. Loki only looks around, with a rather pleased expression on his face.
Loki walks out of the building, suit morphing into his usual green robes, with a golden horned helmet atop his head. A bit tacky if you'd ask some people. The cane transformed back into the scepter, before Loki used it to flip an oncoming car over on its roof.
"Kneel before me." His voice echoed over the people, still scrambling.
"I said, KNEEL." He yells, his voice booming, echoing off of the walls of the surrounding buildings. The crowd is seemingly shocked into submission. They listen, kneeling down on the cobblestone plaza. Loki's mouth twists into a frightening grin, his arms outstretched. "Is this not simpler? Is this not your natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity, that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, for identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel."
Among the downturned faces, an older man slowly stands above the crowd. He speaks up, "Not to men like you."
Loki only laughs, "There are no men like me."
The old man shakes his head, "There are always men like you."
"Look to your elder, people," Loki smiles, bringing up his scepter, "Let him be an example."
The blast hits a shield, throwing Loki backward from the shock. Captain America was crouched down in front of the old man, red, white, and blue shield guarding them both. Captain America stands up, looking down at Loki who is now on the floor, but recovers fast. He looks up at Steve, hatred and rage swirling in his eyes.
"You know, the last time I was in Germany," the Captain starts, walking down the shallow steps toward the god, "and saw a man standing above everybody else, we ended up disagreeing."
"The soldier." The words roll off of Loki's tongue like vitriol. He chuckles, using his scepter as leverage to heave himself up onto his feet. "The man out of time."
"I'm not the one who's out of time." Steve only responds calmly.
"Loki, drop the weapon and stand down." Natasha's voice carries from the quinjet speaker
Loki wastes no time, immediately shooting at the drone. Steve uses the distraction to throw his shield like a giant metal frisbee straight into Loki's chest, disorienting him for a moment before punching him in the face. He punched a god. A god who can wield magic. In the face. With his fist. This is all [Name] can think as she watches down from the quinjet. Loki strikes back at Steve and the two spar for a while until
"Agent Howlett, you miss me?" Tony Stark's voice speaks through the radio. What the hell? The words 'PA System Override' flood the dashboard screens as rock music begins playing through the jet's speakers. [Name] does nothing but roll her eyes as Natasha only looks irritated. The Iron Man suit flies down toward Steve and Loki before Tony blasts Loki head on, sending him flying towards a set of stairs. He lands, somewhat dramatically on the ground, the suit crumbling the brick beneath him. "Make your move, Reindeer Games."
Loki's helmet and cloak disappear, leaving him only in his suit, as he raises his hands in surrender. "Good move."
"Mr. Stark." Steve greets, out of breath.
"Captain." Tony returns without dropping a sweat.
Fury's voice speaks through the radio, "Is he saying anything?"
Natasha briefly looks up before responding, "Not a word."
"Just get him here. We're low on time."
[Name] watches Loki, trying to analyze his body language. Her eyes don't stray from his face.
"I don't like it" Steve speaks quietly to Tony.
"What? Rock of Ages giving up so easily?"
"I don't remember it being that easy. This guy packs a wallop."
"Still, you are pretty spry for an older fellow." He waits for Steve's eyes to turn back to him before continuing, "What's your thing, Pilates?"
"What?"
"It's like calisthenics. You might have missed a couple of things, you know, doing time as a Capsicle."
Steve doesn't react, "Fury didn't tell me he was calling you in."
"Yeah, there's a lot of things Fury doesn't tell you."
The crash of thunder cuts off their conversation. The light startles [Name] enough that she takes her eyes off of Loki for a moment. "Where's this coming from?" Natasha mutters, mostly to herself.
When [Name] shifts her focus back to Loki he looks disturbed.
"What's the matter? You scared of a little lightning?" Steve asks, having taken notice of Loki's expression.
"He only replies, "I'm not overly fond of what follows."
A thud echoes through the cabin as something heavy lands on the roof of the quinjet. Tony puts his helmet back on before pressing the button to open the hatch of the aircraft.
"What are you doing?" Steve calls after him as Tony begins to walk to the slowly deploying ramp.
Thor lands on the ramp before Tony can step foot on it. Before he can do anything, Thor hits him with Mjolnir. Hard. He grabs Loki by the neck before jumping out of the aircraft with his brother in tow.
Tony groans as he stands up. "And now there's that guy."
"Another Asgardian?" Natasha calls from the pilot's seat.
"That guy's a friendly?" Steve asks.
"Doesn't matter. If he frees Loki or kills him, the Tesseract's lost."
"Stark," Steve calls after him, "we need a plan of attack!"
"I have a plan: Attack." is all Tony says before the Iron Man suit bolts out of the hatch, thruster lights slowly disappearing amongst the clouds. Steve grabs a parachute.
"I'd sit this one out, Cap." Natasha says, fidgeting with the toggles in the cockpit.
"I don't see how I can."
"These guys are from legends. They're basically gods." [Name] says.
"There's only one god, ma'am," Steve speaks while securing the straps of his parachute, "And I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that." Steve grabs his shield before jumping out of the jet.
[Name] looks back at Natasha. "Men." Natasha shakes her head in response.
Thor's face softened when he saw her on the plane,"Lady [Name]", he greeted, nodding at her.
"Hold on, you know Shakespeare?" Tony's voice cut through.
"I-" She started, still in shock, "I met him like a year ago, in New Mexico. I bought him lunch"
"I'm sorry, you met a random guy and bought him lunch?" Natasha interjected from the cockpit.
"I thought he was homeless!" [Name] let out, exasperated. Tony snorted. Loki had a look of amusement on his face which quickly vanished after they finished putting his wrists in restraints.
"It's an impressive cage. Not built, I think, for me."
"Built for something a lot stronger than you.
"Oh, I've heard." Loki's head turns to look directly at the camera lens. [Name] could see on the screen in front of her. It was like he was looking straight at her.
"A mindless beast. Makes play that he's still a man." [Name] turns to look at Bruce, who looks like he's heard much worse. 'It's not true.' She wants to tell him. She wants to tell him much more than just that but the words won't leave her mouth. She doesn't know what to say.
"How desperate are you, that you call on such lost creatures to defend you?"
Fury's voice carries through the transmitter, just as commanding as in person. "How desperate am I? You threaten my world with war. You steal a force you can't hope to control. You talk about peace, and you kill because it's fun. You have made me desperate. You might not be glad that you did.
"Ooh," Loki's tone is infuriating. It's meant to goad. "It burns you to have come so close. To have the Tesseract, to have power, unlimited power. And for what? A warm light for all mankind to share? And then to be reminded what real power is."
Fury only smirks in response, before turning his back on Loki and walking away. "Well let me know if 'real power' wants a magazine or something."
"He really grows on you, doesn't he." Banner comments, once the camera feed cuts out. [Name] is still looking at him.
"Loki's gonna drag this out." Steve, sorry, Captain Rogers, is sitting at the table, air of authority surrounding him. "So, Thor, what's his play?"
"He has an army called the Chitauri." Thor speaks without looking up to meet the eyes of anyone in the room. His arms are crossed, eyes cast downward in thought. "They're not of Asgard, nor any world known. He means to lead them against your people. They will win him the Earth, in return, I suspect, for the Tesseract."
"An army?" Steve asks, slightly incredulously. "From outer space." It's crazy to think that this stuff was probably a lot easier back when Hitler was the most dangerous villain. Wait, can she think that? Erik might disagree. But, I mean, if you want to get technical, Hitler was human. One single mutant could have easily overpowered him and taken him out. Wait. She needs to pay attention to the conversation. This is serious, [Name].
"So he's building another portal," Bruce ponders aloud, "That's what he needs Erik Selvig for."
"Selvig?" Thor looks up.
"He's a scientist." [Name] offers.
"He's a friend."
"Natasha interjects, "Loki has him under some kind of spell," she looks down, "along with one of ours." [Name] knew how much stress she'd been under since Clint had been 'compromised'.
"I want to know why Loki let us take him." The Captain's voice is overpowering. "He's not leading an army from here." He shakes his head.
"I don't think we should be focusing on Loki. That guy's brain is a bag full of cats. You could smell crazy on him."
[Name]'s lip curls. Doctor Banner's diction was kind of cute.
"Have care how you speak. Loki may be beyond reason, but he is of Asgard. And he is my brother." Thor's voice takes on an almost protective tone. It made sense. The last time a student had said something less than nice about Rogue at Xavier's, [Name] had thrown a balled up piece of paper at the back of their head. At least Thor was being diplomatic
"He killed eighty people in two days." Natasha stated, barely taking her eyes off the table in front of her.
Thor paused, "He's adopted."
[Name] tried not to laugh. Again, this is serious, [Name].
"I think it's about the mechanics." Bruce started, "Iridium… What do they need the iridium for?-"
"It's a stabilizing agent." Tony Stark's voice cuts him off. He turns back to Agent Coulson, whispering to him as they walk, before turning back to the team. "It means: the portal won;t collapse on itself like it did at S.H.I.E.L.D. No hard feelings, Point Break. You've got a mean swing." He pats Thor on the bicep before continuing past him. "Also, it means the portal can open as wide, and stay open as long as Loki wants." He walks past Maria, who side eyes him, posture unmoving. "Uh, raise the mizzenmast. Jib the topsails." Tony starts spouting off ship-related gibberish, as the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents below look at him strangely.
Tony then calls out, pointing to a single operative, "That man is playing Galaga." Steve looks over, following Tony's hand. "He thought we wouldn't notice, but we did."
Tony then puts a hand to his left eye. "How does Fury even see these?"
Hill responds aptly, "He turns."
"Sounds exhausting"
"Have you ever considered Ritalin?" [Name] says, raising an eyebrow, cutting him off before he can further irritate the rest of the present party.
"Irrelevant. The rest of the raw materials," He continues, tapping at seemingly random screens, "Agent Barton can get his hands on pretty easily. The only major component he still needs is a power source of high-energy density. Something to," He snaps his hands together, "kickstart the cube." [Name] looks up at the others for a moment. She was the only one to pay close enough attention to his hand movements. He wasn't playing around at all. He had attached some sort of device to the back of one of the screens and no one else had noticed.
Maria quips, skeptical, "When did you become an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics?"
"Last night." Tony responds curtly. "The packet, Selvig's notes, the extraction theory papers. Am I the only one who did the reading?" He asks, hands out.
Steve cuts him off, already tired, "Does Loki need any particular kind of power source?"
Bruce pipes up from the back of the room. "We would have to heat the cube to 120 million Kelvin just to break through the Coulomb barrier."
"Unless," Tony adds, "Selvig has figured out how to stabilize the quantum tunneling effect."
"Well, if he could do that, he could achieve heavy ion fusion at any reactor on the planet."
"Finally, someone who speaks English."
"Is that what just happened?"
[Name] struggles to hide a smile at the look of utter confusion on the Captain's face.
Tony walks over to shake Bruce's hand. "Its good to meet you, Doctor Banner." His voice sounds soft, genuine, for the first time all day. "Your work on anti-electron collisions is unparalleled. And I'm a huge fan of the way you lose control and turn into an enormous green rage monster.
Bruce's face turns from one of respect to one of masked annoyance. "Thanks."
"Tony." [Name] warns. Tony turns to look at her, raising his hands in innocence, before dropping them and sending a wink at her, causing her to roll her eyes and turn her attention back to the tablet on her lap.
"Doctor Banner is only here to track the cube." Fury clarifies as he walks in. "I was hoping you might join him."
"I would start with that stick of his." Steve chimes in. "It may be magical, but it works an awful lot like a HYDRA weapon."
"I don't know about that, but it is powered by the cube."
[Name] looks up, eyebrows furrowed. Fury continues, "And I would like to know how Loki used it to turn two of the sharpest men I know into his personal flying monkeys."
"Monkeys? I do not understand-"
"I do!" Steve points, proud expression on his face. "I understood that reference." In that moment the Captain looks a lot like one of [Name]'s students in her eyes. Tony only rolls his eyes at the Captain's outburst.
[Name] pats Thor's arm and quietly whispers to him, "Don't worry, I'll explain later." He smiles at her for a moment.
Tony recovers from his second-hand embarrassment and turns to Bruce. "Shall we play, Doctor?"
"This way, sir.
“You know, you should come by Stark Tower sometime. Top ten floors, all R&D. You'd love it, it's Candy Land.”
“Thanks, but the last time I was in New York I kind of broke...Harlem.” Bruce supplies reluctantly
“Well, I promise a stress free environment. No tension. No surprises.” Tony then pokes Bruce with something tiny and electrical.
Bruce lets out an “Ow!”
Tony’s eyes narrow at Bruce, his face definitely breaching any sense of a personal bubble.
“Dude!” [Name] chides Tony quietly, “Are you okay?” she asks Bruce, concern written all over her face.
Steve’s voice cuts through the short silence, “Hey!”
“Nothing?” Tony asks Bruce
“Are you nuts?” Steve’s voice is stern, a far contrast from Tony’s
“Jury's out.” Tony answers Steve briefly before turning back to Bruce “You really have got a lid on it, haven't you? What's your secret? Mellow jazz? Bongo drums? Huge bag of weed?”
“Is everything a joke to you?” Steve stays focused on Tony, incredulous yet angry expression on his face.
Tony shrugs. “Funny things are.” he says, dead serious, lifting the electrical gizmo to point it at the Captain.
"Threatening the safety of everyone on this ship isn't funny. No offence, Doc."
"Nah, it's- it's alright. I wouldn't have come aboard if I couldn't handle pointy things." Bruce assures, having already gone back to his work.
“You're tiptoeing, big man. You need to strut.”
“And you need to focus on the problem, Mr. Stark.” Steve’s irritation is bleeding into his voice.
“You think I'm not?” Tony looks offended. “Why did Fury call us and why now? Why not before? What isn't he telling us? I can't do the equation unless I have all the variables.”
[Name] looks away from Tony, pensive expression on her face.
“You think Fury's hiding something?” Steve looks wounded by the idea that the authority figure of the situation could be exploiting them.
“I wouldn’t be surprised.” [Name] offers.
“He's a spy. Captain, he's the spy. His secrets have secrets.” Tony then points to Bruce, “It's bugging him too, isn't it?
Bruce fumbles for a second before uttering, “Uh...I just wanna finish my work here and…”
“Doctor?” Steve’s tone leaves no room for escape.
Bruce pauses for a beat, and then, “A warm light for all mankind, Loki's jab at Fury about the cube.”
“I heard it.”
Bruce points at Tony. “Well, I think that was meant for you. Even if Barton didn't tell Loki about the tower it was still all over the news.”
“Stark Tower? That big ugly ...building in New York?” Steve changes his statement after a look from Tony. [Name] smiles. Tony gives her a look too.
Bruce continues, “It's powered by an arc reactor, self-sustaining energy source. That building will run itself for what, a year?”
“That's just the prototype. I'm kind of the only name in clean energy right now. That's what he's getting at” He states proudly.
“So, why didn't SHIELD bring you in on the Tesseract project? I mean, what are they doing in the energy business in the first place?”
“I should probably look into that once my decryption programmer finishes breaking into all of SHIELD's secure files.”
The look on Steve’s face is almost comical. “I’m sorry, did you say…?”
“JARVIS has been running it since I hit the bridge. In a few hours I'll know every dirty secret SHIELD has ever tried to hide.” Tony says this with all the certainty of, well, Tony Stark. He holds out a small baggie. “Blueberry?”
“Yet you're confused about why they didn't want you around.”
“An intelligence organization that fears intelligence? Historically, not awesome.”
[Name] nods in agreement. Tony’s right. Something’s off.
“I think Loki's trying to wind us up. This is a man who means to start a war, and if we don't stay focused, he'll succeed. We have orders, we should follow them.”
“Steve, I get that military etiquette is kind of your thing, but you need to learn to question authority.” [Name] chimes in, the most vocal she’s been since the first day on board. “If you think there’s even a chance that S.H.I.E.L.D’s being untruthful, wouldn’t you want to at least try to find out?”
Bruce speaks up, “Steve, tell me none of this smells a little funky to you.”
Steve is silent for a beat, before saying, “Just find the cube.”
[Name] follows Steve into the hold of the ship and watches as he struggles to wedge open a door labeled 'Secure Storage 10-C'. As he pushes the door aside, she snaps her fingers to catch his attention. The look on his face of someone who's just been caught doing something they're not supposed to might've been amusing if it weren't for the fact that she was also not supposed to be down there.
"Agent? What are you doing here?"
"It's [Name], and I followed you because I was curious. Never thought you'd actually break a rule, Captain."
He continued not to say anything, so she did, "Well? You got the door open, so let's go." She pushed past him through the door, and he followed her after quickly looking around to make sure no one else saw them. The two walk slowly, before Steve suddenly jumps up to a higher deck. [Name] whisper-shouts at him, "I don't have Super Soldier strength!"
"I know. It's safer if you go back, I'll let you know what I find afterward if that makes you feel better."
"I'm not a 'damsel in distress' or whatever you guys had back then, I can take care of myself."
"I know, ma'am, but right now I think it's best that I handle this. You're a scientist right? Go back to Stark and Banner, help them find the cube. That's what matters most right now."
He walks away on the catwalk railing above before she mutters, "Not that kind of scientist…"
Loki paces in the glass cage, halting when he senses someone behind him.
"It's quite a feat," he spoke up, "to sneak up on the likes of me."
"Is that a compliment?" [Name] asks, tilting her head. "I'm flattered."
She changes the subject, "What did you do to Barton?"
"I would say I've expanded his mind." He smiles at her.
"And once you've won, what happens to his mind then?"
"Is this love, [Name]?"
"He's a friend of a friend. I'm looking out for him. I'm more concerned with you."
"Please elaborate." He sits down on the sole bench inside his cell.
She raises an eyebrow, before stepping forward to be directly in front of him.
He speaks before she can. "'Friend of a friend'? I guess you'd be one to me too."
She narrows her eyes at him, questioning.
"My brother, he's spoken of you before."
"What are you talking about?"
"My brother, he thinks you are virtuous, kind. Pathetic. You lie in the service of liars.
You pretend to be separate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors. But they are a part of you.” Loki slams the glass wall of the cell with his fist causing [Name] to visibly flinch. “I won't touch Barton, not until I make him kill your friend as you watch.. Slowly, intimately, in every way he knows she’ll fear. And then he'll wake just long enough to see his good work and when he screams, I'll split his skull. This is my bargain, you mewling quim.
Name turns away, and whispers, “You're a monster.”
Loki laughs. “No. You brought the monster.”
[Name] spins back around, voice steel “So, Banner... that's your play.”
Loki’s confident smile drops. “What?”
[Name speaks into an earpiece to Natasha and Fury, “Loki means to unleash the Hulk. Keep Banner in the lab, I'm on my way. Send Thor as well.” [Name] then turns back to Loki, “Thank you for your cooperation.” She smiles a sweet saccharine grin at him, taunting, and then she walks away.

The Black Widow had grown attached to her new partner. More than their relationship warranted. It wasn’t good. Attachment wasn’t good. It’s not safe. Having something to lose is a liability, a threat. She didn’t know why. Something about the girl pulled at Natasha’s heartstrings. ‘How did you keep your heart all these years?’ By protecting it. By keeping it locked away in a cage so secure, sometimes you yourself can’t reach it. By distancing yourself.
But now this girl had Natasha’s heart. And Natasha had to protect her heart, like she always did.
She had become weary, guarded, more than usual. Not of herself, but of [Name]. Naia. One thing had become very clear to Natasha within her first few minutes of meeting the girl. She wore her heart on her sleeve. She was talkative, open, and not guarded enough to protect her from the risks of such a job. But something that became clear to Natasha after her first week with the girl was: She knew damn well that she needed to keep her guard up. She was perpetually anxious, almost paranoid. And yet for some strange reason the Widow couldn’t fathom, she kept herself open anyways.
And for a reason she would never admit to anyone —not even herself— she put the weight of [Name]’s safety on her hands. She would be the cage around [Name]’s heart, do what [Name] couldn’t do for herself, protect her.
Now, this was misleading. Natasha knew better than anyone that [Name] could protect herself. Natasha had been the sole S.H.I.E.L.D officer (besides Fury) to know that she was a mutant. She knew what Naia could do. She also knew, however, that while Naia was capable of immense damage, [Name] was not so inclined to violence.
Sure, she would rant to Natasha about menial things that frustrated her, people who rubbed her the wrong way, but she would never do something about it. And Natasha was scared that she wouldn't do something when it got serious. She knew [Name] would protect others. She just had to learn how to protect herself. Maybe her need to learn to deem herself worthy of protection wasn't so dire. After all, Natasha would protect her.
The Black Widow was cunning, fearsome. Nat was comforting. Like a shield (no pun intended) to block out the world. Or rather a blanket. A weighted, noise-cancelling blanket that smells faintly of coffee and gunpowder. Maybe that's why [Name] was compelled to hug her one night in a dim hotel room after a mission briefing.
When [Name]'s face burrowed in Natasha's shoulder, the burning sensation from Natasha's soulmate nearly knocked the wind out of her chest. Natasha had hugged her back, she didn't seem uncomfortable, just caught off guard. [Name] didn't think anything of it. Just sweet, touch-deprived, emotionally-stunted Black Widow.
The new notary –Rushman– had walked in with another new secretary. [H/c] hair and eyes that refused to look at him for more than a second. Tony had been trying to get her attention any time she was present. She was smart. She returned his banter. What more could you want?
—
Suddenly, the one who never talked to him was sitting next to him in his room, dabbing concealer onto a bruise under his eye.
"Can I ask you a question, hypothetically," he spoke up, meeting her eyes, "bit odd. If this was your last birthday party you were ever gonna have, how would you celebrate it?"
She was silent for a moment, before responding, "I guess I'd find a way to do whatever I wanted, spend time with the people I care about." She met his eyes for a moment before closing the compact and getting up. His eyes followed her as she walked away, expression unreadable. He didn't move even after she left. Her hand had brushed his face at that last moment before she closed the compact. The stinging from his soul mark could not be a coincidence. Great timing.
She hadn't reacted though. Either it was one-sided (unlikely), or she simply didn't want to have someone like him as a soulmate (the more plausible answer). As much as he didn't want that to be the case, he had no choice but to accept that.
The girl who'd come up to talk to Clint was the same girl Nat had mentioned to him briefly. A 'mention' may not be enough to mean anything with most people but it was clear that whatever Nat's relationship was with that girl, it was more than that. She'd seemed friendly.
Thor had no time to react after [Name] had grabbed his wrists to stop him from smashing anymore mugs at the diner. His soul mark. It had ignited, scalding sensation burning under the sleeves of the shirt she had given him.
He had found his soulmate. And she was of Midgard.
—
"Mother," he called, voice carried by the late night breeze, "May I speak with you? It's …important."
"Of course."
"When I was on Midgard… I met my soulmate."
Frigga was silent for a moment, before a grin spread across her face. "That's wonderful."
"Is it? She left so soon I couldn't follow her after I realized. And if my soulmate is of Midgard, I can never see her now that the Bifrost is destroyed. I have lost my brother and my soulmate all at once."
Frigga put a hand on his shoulder. He still didn't look at her. "I'm sure you will find her some day. The Norns will make sure of it."
Having returned to Asgard, Loki was still standing at the Bifrost. He was so disoriented that a human had bumped into him. He had to get his act together before the next part of his scheme.
Bruce thought she was nice. The agent that was sent this time. Not at all aggressive like the many agents from various organizations that had come looking for him in the past. At least for now.
"Ask for her number, ya moron." The older man at the table beside him chides Steve. Steve turns to look at him, then back at the woman. He watches her disappear around the corner, before looking back once more to the old man. He opens his mouth as if to say something, and then seems to change his mind as he turns back to his sketchbook. He continues to sketch the city view in front of him.

[Name]'s eyes skimmed over the file of the agent she was supposed to be working with. Natalia Alianovna Romanova. Now, Natasha Romanoff. A spy. Well, rather, an ex-spy. From everything she could gather from the terse description, which wasn't much, she didn't seem like the talkative type. [Name] did not do well in extended periods of silence.
Fury had always kept most of her information off of S.H.I.E.L.D's files, as per her request. —She didn't want anyone tracing her back to her family, putting Xavier's school at risk. Even if S.H.I.E.L.D seemed legit, there's no saying what such a large operation would do if given the knowledge of so many mutants and their abilities.— It didn't stop him from referring to her as "Agent" though.
[Name] was right. Natasha didn't talk much. [Name] had lost count of how many times she had opened her mouth, only to fail to get any words out. [Name] wanted to talk to her. She seemed interesting. The fact that she was absolutely gorgeous in [Name]'s eyes certainly didn't help. I never thought I had a thing for the mysterious type. Natasha raised a brow in question after noticing the girl's abnormal silence. She simply shrugged in response.
They were currently on their way to Stark Industries. Of course, Fury had pulled some strings to get Natalie Rushman and [Name] Howell to the top of the candidate list to be assistants for Ms. Pepper Potts, successor to Tony Stark. The Iron Man. A potential candidate for the Avengers Inititative. It was Natasha's job as a long-time agent and [Name]'s with her background in psychology to thoroughly appraise Stark's compatibility with the project.
One of [Name]'s marks had always stood out against the rest. The other symbols adorning her arms were more vague, they could be attributed to a number of people on the planet. Who's to say which people were actually the ones the mark connected her to. This mark, however, always seemed strange. She had no idea what it was supposed to be. At least, up until May, 2008. Three years prior to this unfortunate assignment. [Name] had let the news play on in the background while she ate. Tony Stark had been brought back home, safe. He had been kidnapped. She found out that piece of news a bit late. She didn't usually choose to turn on the news, it was too depressing. She had been surprised, when Stark had made the spontaneous anouncement that Stark Industries would no longer produce weapons. What the hell was he on about? That was like, their number one thing. Oh well, who cared about the rich losing money. He seemed to have had a moral epiphany. Near-death experiences tend to do that to people. She was somewhat apathetic to this news, more consumed in mentally noting down things she had to buy next time she went grocery shopping. Until she saw it. That weird symbol that she had never understood. An arc reactor. Tony Stark's new, clean, sustainable-energy-producing invention. Oh shit.
You can see why she'd be a bit nervous to even be near Mr Stark now. Genius-billionaire-playboy-philanthropist, Tony Stark, was her soulmate. Emphasis on the 'playboy'. This would not end well. At least not for her. It's not like she had anyone to blame, S.H.I.E.L.D had no way of knowing about this little issue. Maybe if she got lucky she wouldn't have to run into him at all.
And suddenly she was in Tony Stark's room, dabbing concealer on the bruise under his left eye. "Can I ask you a question, hypothetically," he broke the silence, looking up at her, "bit odd. If this was your last birthday party you were ever gonna have, how would you celebrate it?"
She wore a pensive look on her face for a moment, before answering, "I guess I'd find a way to do whatever I wanted, spend time with the people I care about." She met his eyes for a moment before closing the compact and getting up. His eyes followed her as she walked away, expression unreadable.
June, 2011
[Name]'s eyes drifted up to the figure standing sentinel in the shadows, watching over the temporary base. The Hawk. Or was it Hawkeye? He was an archer. She knew that much. Fury had suggested she shadow Phil for a while. Not really shadowing, more following him around on assignments. They were in Puente Antiguo, New Mexico. Something about an "artifact" appearing in the middle of the desert. She wasn't sure. She was pretty sure she zoned out while Phil was explaining it to her. Back to her current fixation, Fury had sent the Hawk to help Phil here in New Mexico. And he was very distracting. "Do you always creep around like that?"
He looked down from his post, almost startled that she had spoken to him. "It's my job." He responded, a sly smile making its way onto his face. He seemed friendly.
She didn't comment on how that response didn't do anything to quell her ask. "Are you allowed to take breaks? There's a diner somewhere around here, when you go a bit into, you know, real civilization. If you want coffee or something."
His smile seemed to soften. Or maybe it was a trick of the light. "Thanks for the offer, but I'm kinda busy here," then his voice became lighter, "You know, this place'd fall apart without me."
She tilted her head with a smile in response, before leaving. "Offer still stands if you want to let this place burn to the ground later."
One of her soul marks was a bow and arrow… No, lots of people were into archery.
She was walking into town, hands stuffed deep in the pockets of her jacket. The knit was pilling, and the vinyl decal on the front was practically decayed, but the jacket was soft. Her eyes were beginning to sting from the wind intermittently nipping at her face. Or maybe it was allergies. With her S.H.I.E.L.D clearance she'd have no trouble getting eyedrops from the hospital pharmacy.
After finding her way to the hospital, she stood still for a minute, taking in the fluorescent lights and the smell of alcohol. The sterile environment was as much comforting as it was disconcerting. A commotion took her out of her fixed position. Why did people keep interrupting her daydreaming? This was getting really annoying. Ororo said they might be something called absence seizures. What were we talking about? Oh right, the disturbance.
A large man, with dark blonde hair falling almost to his shoulders, was causing a one-man riot. Probably a psych patient.
"Sorry about that." the words tumbled out of her, an automatic response after she had bumped into a man on the way back into the base. Her eyes cast downward as usual, glancing up when she received no response from the stranger. Her eyes met his in earnest. "Are you good?"
He stood still a moment, before uttering a small, "Yes, I suppose so.", and quickly stalking off. Was he an agent? He wasn't dressed like one. Maybe he was someone higher up the food chain. He looked disturbed, unsure, proud, and so many things at once, you'd think he'd just experienced something life-changing.
It took some time to restock the eyedrops she needed. There was a huge guy in a hospital gown wandering around outside the hospital when she had come back to get them. He looked severely lost. Wait, was that the psych patient from earlier? What was he doing outside? Maybe she could talk to him. What's the worst that could happen? (…Actually let's not go there.)
—
She had brought the man back to the temporary accomodations S.H.I.E.L.D had provided her for while she was in New Mexico. He had just emerged from the bathroom, wearing a set of oversized clothes [Name] had stolen from Logan. What the hell had she gotten herself into?…
"What is this?" His voice seemed to echo throughout the small room. He was holding up the T-shirt she had given him.
"That's…", she stood up, hesitation evident on her face, "a shirt…"
"It will suffice." He made no room for a response as he walked towards her desk, putting the T-shirt on, rather awkwardly. It was so not fair to be that clueless and that hot. Wasn't there a word for that? Oh yeah, a himbo. "This mortal form has grown weak," He spoke, cutting off her train of thought. "I need sustenance." God, what was this, Shakespeare in the park? Whatever, he was right. There's no way he wouldn't be hungry after all this time doing who knows what.
"Alright," she walked towards the door and began putting her boots on, "Let's go get you some food, big guy." He followed her outside.
—
She continued to stare at the strange man as he ate. Was he high? He ate all of the snacks she had in her backpack, and yet was devouring the diner breakfast like a man starved. "This drink, I like it." He announced through a mouthful of food, before lifting up the mug and smashing it on the ground, "Another!" [Name] fliched away, shocked, before. gathering herself to grab his wrists before he could throw something else. He froze.
"what the hell are you doing?" she whisper-shouted.
"I would like another drink." He said, dumbfounded, as if he couldn't fathom anything being wrong with his actions.
"Wha- well- Okay! But you can't just break things! Alright?" She turned to the waitress behind the counter, "Sorry! Just a little accident. I'll help clean up." She bent down to scoop up the eramic shards with her hands before once again turning to scold the man, " Dude, if you wanted another one you could've just said so!"
"I just did." The himbo still looked confused.
"I mean like- ask nicely like 'Could I please have another cup of coffee?'"
"I meant no disrespect." He tilted his head in earnest.
"Ah- I- okay. But you- you can't throw things like that anymore. Alright?" She looked up at him, eyebrows raised.
"You have my word."
"Okay. Good. Well I clearly got more than what I bargained for here, so I'm gonna get you another coffee —in a paper cup— and then leave. I can't spend my time babysitting you." She got up and set some bills on the counter to pay for the food (and the broken mug) before walking out, just as two burly men walked in, yapping about some crater.
"Hi, Doctor Banner, I'm [Name]." She greeted him, tentatively reaching out a hand.
He took it, hesitantly, shaking it, "Um, it's ah- it's nice to meet you, but can I ask why you're here?"
She didn't know why Fury had sent her along with Phil to scope out Dr. Bruce Banner for the Avengers Initiative.
"Doctor Banner, I'm Agent Phil Coulson. We're with S.H.I.E.L.D. We've simply come to check in, see how you were doing. You haven't had any… incidents recently, have you?"
His expression seemed to become even more withdrawn, if that was possible. He licked his lips, looking down at the mottled cobblestone road.
—
"I think he'd be a nice addition to the team."
"As much as I agree with that decision I'd like to point out that Howlett's motivation for this recommendation may be clouded by a crush."
"Phil- I don't even know him! We just talked about the Avengers Initiative. That's all."
"And yet here we are." He smiled smugly, turning to face Fury.
She frowned. Fury Rolled his eyes- well, eye. He was getting too old for this shit. Was he the director of S.H.I.E.L.D, or a babysitter for their field agents?

"You've been asleep, Cap. For seventy years." The words rung through Steve's skull, reverberated throughout his entire being. None of this should be happening. None of this-
—
S.H.I.E.L.D had sent him to a place called 'the Retreat'. It was a nice place. Far from the city, isolated, to let him adjust slowly to the modern world. His adjustion period was over. He'd slept for seventy years. Enough was enough. It was time to start going out into the real world. Time to be productive, or at least, time to face the world.
Steve had been wandering around the city in an attempt to find a beacon of familiarity in this new world he’d been so suddenly pulled into. All he had wanted was a coffee. A simple, plain, black coffee. Milk and sugar were luxuries he’d gotten unaccustomed to in the army. Coffee couldn’t have changed much, right? Wrong.
Coffee had very much changed. He’d overheard the lady in front of him in line— syrup, cold foam, oat milk? How would one even milk an oat?
He’d sat down outside, sketchbook in front of him, pencil in hand. Sketching always grounded him. Maybe expressing the world he now saw on paper would help him understand it. Maybe it would just calm him down, serving as a distraction.
“Waiting on the big guy?” The waitress’ voice pulled him out of his daze.
“Ma’am?” He prompted.
“Iron Man,” She nodded, continuing after seeing the puzzled look on Steve’s face, “a lot of people eat here just to see him fly by.”
“Right,” He trailed off, unsure how to respond, “Maybe another time”
“Table’s yours as long as you like, nobody’s waiting on it”, the waitress offered —Beth, going off of the name inscribed on her badge— while she refilled his coffee mug. “Plus we’ve got free wireless.” She raised her eyebrows before she walked off to another table.
“Radio?” Steve questioned. Wireless? What did she mean by wireless?
“I think she meant Wi-Fi.”
Steve’s head turned to look at the source of the new voice.
“I’m sorry?”
“Wi-Fi?”
“Oh yeah, right…” He trailed off a bit flustered.
“You look a little lost, are you alright? Could I help you?” She asked.
"No, I'm alright, I wouldn't want to be a bother." He smiled reassuringly, turning back towards his sketchbook. She hesitated a moment, before walking away.
"Ask for her number, ya moron." One of the old men at the table behind him had chided. He only watched as she disappeared from view, blending in with the Manhattan crowd.
