A man stepped forward, his eyebags and bedhead evident. βI did, sir.β
βWe turn the damn thing on and the engine explodes.β Doyoung kicked the underside of the ship and I took a step back. βWho authorized you to be on this team?β
βTaeyong, sir,β the man said, looking as if he wanted to crawl into himself.
Doyoung chuckled humorlessly. βAnd I thought Taeyong had some brains on him.β His voice turned cold. βGet the hell out of my workshop.β
The poor engineer didnβt need to be told twice, practically running out of the room with all the strength he could muster. Once the door closed, Doyoung turned to the rest of us. βI need a working engine by tonight. If you fail, humanity dies. Get to work.β
We hurried to our stations, putting our heads together like a football team to brainstorm our options, but our ideas were wearing thin. We had been doing this routine for months now and we seemed further from a break through than we did the day before. No one had slept more than a wink, running off of fear and caffeine, and it was a wonder that our bodies didnβt give out like the machines we were paid to make.
Doyoung went from station to station, joining the brainstorm before butting out and joining another. The end of the world as we knew it was coming and he still held us all on a leash, as if extreme discipline would keep us alive. Maybe it would.
Finally, a girl from a station across the room said, βI think we have an idea.β
We turned to face her, a room of brilliantly exhausted engineers with sparkles in their eyes waiting for instruction, waiting for someone to tell our bodily machines how to function. She looked nervous, cleared her throat, then said, βOnly if Doyoung approves of it, of course.β
Doyoung didnβt look impressed. βGo on.β
The girl gave us a quick run through of her teamβs idea, which seemed to be the same as the last idea we had come up with, but Doyoung gave a nod at the end of it, looked us each in the eye and said, βMaybe we will save humanity after all.β Then, he clapped his hands, all hints of optimism gone. βNow, get to work.β
