“Oh I see.” Sam just had this feeling she was going to get shot at. From past experience, if there was even the smallest percentage that she could get shot at, she got shot at.
“Well if I’m going to go, then I’m probably going to need the help of Lieutenant Reynolds.” Maybe she could even use him as a human shield.
“Don’t worry commander, you’ll have a team of SIU agents with and around you. I doubt your CO would let me steal you for a case if I couldn’t guarantee your safety.” She was actually certain of that. Most ship captains put their crews’ safety above almost anything. Even in a time of war. So she had made plans for that.
“I’ll see if we can get additional clearance, but so far Starfleet only cleared you.” Convincing the brass that they needed more would be hard. But if that was what she needed.
"That's better than handing me a phase pistol and telling me to 'Shoot first and don't worry about questions later'," Sam responded, but she was still nervous. Danger wasn't her favorite, though she was in deep space where things tended to go wrong. Hell, any day she wasn't part of a small explosion or fire was a miracle.
"I mean, I could do it on my own," Sam clarified. "I just imagine it would speed things up a lot. And I don't like to lolly gag on a project. The more help the better."
Elizabeth coughs and looks up at the woman "Have you seen my Momma?"
Sam, unaware there was anyone around that wasn’t her height, was startled to see the small girl standing at her feet.
“Uh,” she stammered, “I’m afraid I haven’t seen your mother. I’m very sorry….Miss….er, I’m sorry who are you?”
Travis got all his stories from Hoshi. Now everything made sense. She knew Travis had been talking about kids lately, and she knew he wanted some. But she just wasn’t ready. Not yet. “I see,” Sam answered as they walked.
“No that’s perfectly alright,” Sam agreed. Better to be on T'Pol’s good side any day of the week. “If she’s not there then I can always call her on the comms.”
“I like doing science with Momma though, it’s fun and sometimes she’ll bring back a soil sample or a rock from one of the planets she visits and we get to look at it together.” Elizabeth grins.
Elizabeth coughs into her arm before nodding. “Okay, you don’t think she went back to our ship do you?”
"Science is the best," Sam agreed. "And T'Pol has always been very good at it. I guess that's why they named her the Science Officer of Enterprise." Sam frowned. That job was supposed to be hers, once upon a time. But one thing led to another which led to another which led to a drunken conversation between her and her captain now. She didn't think Elizabeth needed to hear that particular story.
"I'm not sure why she'd be back there, but I can stay with you until we find her, if that would make you feel better?"
"Seein' as you aint part of my crew, and I'm not in a coma, or dead, I'm gonna have to ask you to step back to the other side of the yellow line and away from the engine." Trip calls from where he's cleaning the plasma coils (cxmmandertxcker)
Sam frowned, she wasn't used to being groused at in the engineering room. But seeing as this wasn't her ship she did as requested and stepped back. "Pardon me, Commander. Was just taking a tour of Enterprise. It's been so long since I've been here that I'd forgotten what it all looks like.
//Sorry I haven't been around. I've had issues with my anxiety lately but I'll try to get stuff done tomorrow. I'm really sorry guys!

The word transport automatically made Sam imagine herself trying to work on a small freighter but she brushed it off. As a kid that’s sometimes where his dad had to do a lot of his work, if alternative transportation wasn’t available. Equipment was fairly easy to take along, but it was nice to know labs were already being provided and that she wouldn’t have to pack anything.
“Wait, am I going to be in any real danger, am I?” Sam asked apprehensively. Not that she hadn’t been in danger before, but Sam was hoping to go at LEAST two weeks before getting shot at again.
She noticed the look on the doctor’s face and wondered what she was thinking. Probably not what she’d actually be doing, but it was likely to be close enough. Though as she was stood there, Merri realised exactly how silly it sounded when she said it.
“That’s what I’m gonna be there to prevent. We’re not expecting you to be though.” Danger was for the officers and agents, not for their hired help. That’s what she was hoping at least.

“Oh that makes sense I suppose.” Travis sure talked a lot about Elizabeth, but that could have been stories from other people.
“We don’t have any experiments or chemicals out right now,” Sam said. “Right now it’s strictly documentation time. Every three months we go through old files and reports and clean them up, shorten them, or delete obsolete ones. No need to take up more room than absolutely necessary.” Sam studied the girl closely. “Still, you could always wait outside the door while I check around if that would make you feel better.”
“I spend more time with Ms. Hoshi then Mr. Travis.” She says. “Ms. Hoshi gives me language lessons sometimes, I like her Vulcan writing lessons more then Momma’s.”
“Well… okay but Momma says I’m not allowed so I’d rather wait outside if that’s alright.” She nods. “What if Momma’s not there? Then what happens?” She chews her lip nervously, her blue eyes flick around the corridor again. “Do we go look somewhere else?”
Travis got all his stories from Hoshi. Now everything made sense. She knew Travis had been talking about kids lately, and she knew he wanted some. But she just wasn't ready. Not yet. "I see," Sam answered as they walked.
"No that's perfectly alright," Sam agreed. Better to be on T'Pol's good side any day of the week. "If she's not there then I can always call her on the comms."
“No problem,” Sam said, standing up as well. She bit her lip and wondered about even asking her next question. She had no idea where the labs were. Were they on Earth? That could mean a nice little home visit with a few friends.
“At the risk of sounding completely stupid, where ARE your labs?” She asked.
“It is really important.” She nodded, because this meant more than the scientist could understand right now. She’d get it eventually though. “The ones we’re using right now are on Deneva colony. The full labs are in San Francisco, but we’d be a bit far from where the crime happened. I’ll fill you in on the rest on the transport.”

Being abused can seriously affect your ability to distinguish between “not obviously pleased” and “obviously displeased” because abusers go from Neutral to Hostile for absolutely no discernible reason, and eventually you start worrying that everyone is going to be like that and you start feeling this urge to make absolutely sure that the people you actually care about aren’t mad or upset, because to you, “there’s no evidence that they’re not angry” is the same as “there’s evidence that they are angry”

//I'll try to respond to everyone today. I got about 4 hours of sleep last night so I can't promise. I'm pretty exhausted.
“Never mentioned me?!” Sam asked, eyes wide. She brushed it off, wondering why he wouldn’t have ever mentioned their relationship, but maybe that wasn’t a conversation to have with a child. “I’m Doctor Samantha Owens, but you can just call me Sam if you want.”
“Well, I’m headed to the lab, and since it’s TECHNICALLY my call who goes in and out of the labs since I run them, I think you could come check them out with me for your mom.” Sam frowned, wondering what Captain Hernandez would think. “But you can’t leave my side and you can’t touch anything. Promise?”
“Well I don’t talk to him a lot, I’m not allowed on the bridge and my time is at 9 so I don’t really see him.” She shrugs. “I’ll call you Dr. Owens if that’s okay?”
“Um… I’m not allowed in the lab, I could get really sick.” She mutters, she was pretty sure not being allowed in the lab had more to do with not having any immune system then anything else, but either way her mother wouldn’t be happy. “I”m not sure I’m allowed in the lab, this isn’t even my ship…”
"Oh that makes sense I suppose." Travis sure talked a lot about Elizabeth, but that could have been stories from other people.
"We don't have any experiments or chemicals out right now," Sam said. "Right now it's strictly documentation time. Every three months we go through old files and reports and clean them up, shorten them, or delete obsolete ones. No need to take up more room than absolutely necessary." Sam studied the girl closely. "Still, you could always wait outside the door while I check around if that would make you feel better."
“I’m sure the temporary leave wouldn’t be an issue,” Sam said, picking up her PADD again. “I’ve got to wrap up this experiment, shouldn’t take more than a few hours. Half a day at the most.” She tapped the sides of the small device so that Merri would know what she was talking about. “I’d leave it to Lieutenant Reynolds but I imagine he’d blow up half the lab if I did.”
“I need to go get you clearance to our lab, thank you, commander. This means we’re not gonna have a huge delay in our case.” She smiled and stood up. “If you contact Starfleet Security when you’re ready and ask for Lieutenant Brody. I’ll come and get you.”
"No problem," Sam said, standing up as well. She bit her lip and wondered about even asking her next question. She had no idea where the labs were. Were they on Earth? That could mean a nice little home visit with a few friends.
"At the risk of sounding completely stupid, where ARE your labs?" She asked.
Sam forced a grin away. When she thought of Mr. Reed she couldn’t imagine him recommending her without at least a little resentment. Not that the Lieutenant and Doctor Owens didn’t get along, but she and her partner in crime, Travis played a rather nasty prank on Malcolm last time they met. “Well it’s always nice to be well thought of,” Sam said. “I’d be more than happy to help. Tell me what I’m going to be looking for.”
Merri saw the smile that ghosted the commander’s lips as she mentioned Malcolm and made a mental note to ask him about it when she got the chance. She then needed to explain it as simply as she could in public. “I have reason to believe our in-house expert is… compromised, on this case. So he’s been put on enforced leave for a week. We need to know exactly what chemicals we’re dealing with and where they came from. I know it’s not strictly your area of expertise, but we’re desperate. We can get you the temporary leave from your CO.”
"I'm sure the temporary leave wouldn't be an issue," Sam said, picking up her PADD again. "I've got to wrap up this experiment, shouldn't take more than a few hours. Half a day at the most." “Oh sweetie a very, very long time ago.” Sam frowned at the memory for a moment before shaking her head to send it away. “You were too young to remember it, in fact. Ensign Mayweather has told me a lot about you, however.”
Sam sighed, then shook her head. “I haven’t seen your parents all day. Any ideas where they were working today?”
“Mr. Travis told you about me?” She raises a dark eyebrow. “Mr. Travis has never mentioned you. What’s your name?”
“Well Daddy’s not in the engine room, cause I was just there. I fell asleep and he was gone and if Momma’s on the bridge I’m not allowed there at all…” She frowns trying to think. “Momma could be in the lab but I’m also not allowed in there. I don’t know where Daddy could be but he’s definitely not with Momma…”
"Never mentioned me?!" Sam asked, eyes wide. She brushed it off, wondering why he wouldn't have ever mentioned their relationship, but maybe that wasn't a conversation to have with a child. "I'm Doctor Samantha Owens, but you can just call me Sam if you want."

Sam, unaware there was anyone around that wasn’t her height, was startled to see the small girl standing at her feet.
“Uh,” she stammered, “I’m afraid I haven’t seen your mother. I’m very sorry….Miss….er, I’m sorry who are you?”
“Elizabeth.” She sneezes into the arm of her dress and tilts her head back to look up at the woman. “I’m lookin’ for Commander T'Pol.”
Elizabeth’s blue eyes study the woman carefully, trying to decide if the woman will be any help. Elizabeth wasn’t actually sure how she’d gotten here, she’d come over to Columbia with her father, but she’d fallen asleep in a corner of the engine room only to wake up not feeling well at all. So she’d gone looking for one of her parents only to realize she wasn’t on the Enterprise at all, and that she was quite lost. Coughing again she looks around the corridor and then back to the woman.
“Commander Tucker works too just not both of them at the same time.” She mutters, both her parents at the same time didn’t always end well these days.
Sam wanted to smack herself in the head with the palm of her hand. Of course this was Elizabeth. Of course she was the daughter of her friend and colleague Trip Tucker. She hadn’t seen the young girl in so long she didn’t recognize her. But upon closer look at the face she could see both parents clearly.
“Oh Elizabeth,” Sam said with a smile. “I didn’t recognize you you’ve gotten so big!”
“You’ve met me?” Elizabeth studies the woman another moment and is almost certain she has no idea who she is. She backs up a step or two so she can get a better look at the woman’s face “I’m sorry ma'am but I don’t know who are… I’d just like to find Momma or Daddy…”
