Just had a thought for an action hero thing: 30-something woman hero is doing her ass-kicking thing. One day, her boss shows up at her door, and tells her she has to stand down, or there will be consequences. āHoney, itās not that youāre too old. Itās just the public donāt like to see a woman of your age saving the day. It feels emasculatingā.
So woman is stripped of her support team, fellow agents, and is pretty much put on the shelf. She tries to do heroing, but keeps getting cockblocked by younger women or superhero men she used to work alongside.
Just when sheās hitting rock bottom (and sitting in her house wearing pyjamas and eating ice cream), thereās a knock at the door. Judi Dench is standing there, and our heroine assumes itās a charity collection.
āOh no, dear,ā Dench says, smiling. āWeāve come to recruit you.ā
āRecruit me? For what?ā
āTo do what we do best: save the bloody world.ā
And all at once sheās part of a covert ops team made of all the older women who have been retired and who currently are holding the reins of managing the world.
pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase
I am here for this plan.
Oh, yes.
Of course, a few older women heroes and vigilantes donāt take the offer. Some are too embittered by the rejection theyāve faced and decide to show the world exactly why theyāre still to be feared.Ā
Enter Judi Denchās arch-nemesis, Dame Helen Mirren.

I am Groot! I am Steve Rogers.

oh! I have to tell you guys a great story one of my professors told me. So he has a friend who is involved in these Shakespeare outreach programs where they try to bring Shakespeare and live theatre to poor and underprivileged groups and teach them about English literature and performing arts and such. On one of their tours they stopped at a young offenders institute for women and they put on a performance of Romeo and Juliet for a group of 16-17 year old girls. It was all going really well and the girls were enjoying and laughing through the first half - because really, the first half is pretty much a comedy - but as the play went on, things started to get quiet. Real quiet. Then it got up to the suicide scene and mutterings broke out and all the girls were nudging each other and looking distressed, and as this teacher observed them, he realised - they didnāt know how the play ended. These girls had never been exposed to the story of Romeo and Juliet before, something which he thought was impossible given how ubiquitous it is in our culture. I mean, the prologue even gives the ending away, but of course it doesnāt specify exactly how the whole ātake their lifeā thing goes down, so these poor girls had no idea what to expect and were sitting there clinging to hope that Romeo would maybe sit down for a damn minute instead of murdering Paris and chugging poison - but BAM he died and they all cried out - and then Juliet WOKE UP and they SCREAMED and by the end of the play they were so upset that a brawl nearly broke out, and thatās the story of how Shakespeare nearly started a riot at a juvenile detention centre
Apparently something similar happened during a production of Much Ado at Rikers Island because a bunch of inmates wanted to beat the shit out of Claudio, which is more than fair tbh
honestly Shakespeare would be so pleased to know his plays were nearly starting brawls centuries into the future
āThere is nothing like staying at home for real comfortā - Jane Austen
Emily Vancamp as Sharon Carter in āCaptain America: The Winter Soldierā
Hereās an example of what we call a āsoft noā. Sharon turns down Steveās offer in a way thatās meant not to insult him but never actually uses the word ānoā.
Steve clearly gets the message, though, and importantly offers to leave her alone. Sharonās comment afterwards gives him an opportunity to try again later, but he doesnāt press and respects her rejection of his company even though itās probably hurt his feelings a bit.
Just in case you ever wonder āWhat would Captain America do?ā; there you go.
never do something steve rogers wouldnāt do.
Unless itās jumping out of a plane without a parachute, you probably shouldnāt do that
I just have to add - Iāve seen interviews with Marvel people where they say that this scene demonstrates that Capās awkward with women and doesnāt know how to ask women out on a date.Ā And it drives me crazy, because - as the OP says - Steve behaved perfectly here.Ā It was a very charming, nonthreatening offer, and he accepted her rejection with good grace.Ā You canāt help but feel that to Hollywood, the fact that she said no means he asked badly - which is exactly how Iād expect Hollywood to think, namely, the idea that men should keep pressing and pushing women until they say yes
Read this, then read it again.
ChrisEvans: This is the moment we met. He was trying so hard to stay seated even though he desperately wanted to get out. I knew right away that he was coming home with me, so I took this video to always remember our first hello. Rescue dogs are the best dogs!! #NationalPetDay
