2021. Another Vergil sketch.

I experimented a lot at that time (thus the lack of finished pieces), and it turned out that digital painting comes to me easier than I thought. However, I didn't go down that route in my artistic journey because to get a piece like this one from this sketchy-but-ok-looking stage to final polish is just too much repetitive work for me, idk. And I'd never be satisfied with "unfinished" pieces like this one here, so I decided not to paint anything anymore, and stick to lineart + flats for the most part.

If someone were to show Vergil what love actually is, like they show him that love and respect aren't just some sort of verbal contract, his behavior towards that person would change drastically. However, it would only be towards that person/people that have shown him that. Otherwise, he would be his usual rich man self. This goes for romantic and platonic relationships.

Since becoming the Demon King, Vergil's eyes aren't the natural icy blue they once were. He can make them that way if he needs to, but by natural default, they glow now.

Crystalline eyes stared back, trying not to show their own surprise at his vulnerability. Vergil was a pillar of strength, a man who never needed anything — not the way Kat did, at least. Not once had she suspected Vergil could need her as she did him, as more than his partner in freedom fighting. Now, she was questioning that. The way he'd asked her to stay had been so vulnerable, so honest. Of course she was going to stay. Of course she'd do anything he asked of her.

Kat took another step closer as Vergil stuttered. Wanting, yearning, heart trembling, lips parted. When he mentioned continuing her training, she visibly deflated. The hope of her expression faded, her shoulders relaxed. Training. Right. That was of utmost importance if they were going to win. Despite her disappointment, Kat nodded and forced a rather pathetic attempt at a smile.

"Yeah," She conceded, feeling none too pleased. What she really wanted was his arms around her, his lips on hers, to lay by his side for the night. "Training sounds like a good idea."

Vergil could swear he saw her deflate at the mention of training. Normally, he wouldn't care and would keep pushing her a little further. But something was beating at his head to give her a break and just spend time with her. Just give in to the feeling of calm she gave him. Even if it was just this once. He looked down at the ground as if ashamed of himself in some way.

"Kat." His tone had lost its strict edge. Then he put a gentle hand on her shoulder. It was almost as if he were afraid he would break her. Icy blue eyes slowly looked at her again, his vulnerability growing stronger in that moment. "I don't know if I could give you what you truly desire. I... I don't know how." The last part was spoken just barely above a whisper. He was opening his walls to her, showing her a glimpse of how he felt about her. But he was afraid to go any further. He didn't want another Rachel situation, where he was just used for social points in a toxic community.

Vergil doesn't usually show his anger or rage in a burst of emotion and violence. He sits there, quietly, staring with a straight face. Anyone who doesn't know him would probably be confused or think they've won. But anyone who knows him well would know that his cunning mind is devising ways to deal with the person. And when he figures it out, he will act on it at whatever cost. Maybe not immediately, but he will. And the more it happens, the less likely it is to be pretty. And that person will never see it coming.

Vergil never forgets those who wrong him or piss him off. Never.

Vergil looked at Kat with a wide, icy-blue stare, his lips slightly parted, adding to the visual shock on his face. It wasn’t how he felt when Kat came back that made him feel that way. It was what he had said out loud, words he had said to himself every time he watched her walk away. 'Please, don't go.' It made him sound like some desperate man seeking affection and attention. It was unbecoming of him, yet he didn't find the will to back out of what he started, like so many times before.

He swallowed as his gaze remained on her beautiful eyes. "I, uh..." His voice was shaking in confusion. Then he snapped himself out of it and reluctantly ripped his eyes away from her, clearing his throat like everything was normal. "I just thought we could perhaps, uh...continue your training."

He internally kicked himself. Why couldn't he just come out and say he just wanted her there? Tell her that her presence calmed him somehow, even if she was just there in silence.

Vergil's adoptive parents never treated him like a typical child. They didn't know how to. So they raised him as one would treat an adult employee. For any 'childish' thing he did, they would punish him for being 'too immature' by lowering his allowance. Trust me when I say Vergil figured out how to earn his own money so fast. He even learned how to be his own boss and run a business by high school!

But because he was not parented as a child, Vergil struggled to raise his own son. He never wanted Nero to go without the love of a parent. So he tried his damnedest and taught himself by watching people and parenting videos. Most of which became redundant when he started following his heart instead.
