My first Java program! Â I instantiated a Deck of Cards class (DeckOfCards) that was made up of Card sub-classes. Â For my next trick...
Eclipse? Â NetBeans? Â IntelliJ? Â So far, NetBeans seems to have the easiest accessibility for a n00b like me.
Just settling down to a nice morning cup of coffee and the Oracle docs for the Java language.
Such question when it comes to testing a class whose primary mission is to manipulate the DOM... but DON’T TEST jQUERY!

So I’m sitting here, working backwards through Java controllers and adapters and whatnot, trying not to knock over my mental stack trace of what is calling what with what parameters... and then my teammates start talking about our template watching dev plugin.  It’s a great problem to have: I’m learning new stuff, and also surrounded by a bunch of smart people who are always tinkering not only with our site, but with the set of tools that we use to build and fix our site.  But it’s such a challenge to balance my own learning with absorbing all the knowledge that is flying around my on a daily--nay--hourly basis.
Rule of thumb: Don’t Test jQuery!
So It’s Been a Year...
Yes, it’s been a year... no, not since I last posted here, but since I started learning programming at all.
I have to admit, it’s got a point.
A Milestone Goal
So I have been thinking a lot about setting up a Linux machine. Â I am intrigued by the concept that if I take the time to read and study up, I can put an operating system on a computer that is entirely free. Â I also feel like it's something of a rite of passage for a computer programmer to set up their own Linux box from top to bottom. Â We have a few laptops around the house that are old and conked out, and they might work for setting something up. Â So that's my new goal.

Always something new to learn. Â Next project: jQuery $.when()
So my first commit in like 2 weeks is going in. Â And, AND, it's that story that I was feeling some anxiety about actually finishing; like, "Is it actually done yet?" Â "Is it as good as I can make it?" Â "Are my tests comprehensive enough? Â Are they too verbose?"
So it's been a little while, but I'm back on the horse. Â And I'm looking at the build-wall up in our team area, fingers crossed, hoping that it doesn't turn red indicating my changes broke the build...
Making a big switch today from Sublime Text 2 to Sublime Text 3. Â I still have not yet made the biggest jump, from ST over to IntelliJ.
Most Fun I've Had All Week (at work):
So, my team was tasked with building a front-end service where a user can enter their cell phone number, receive an access code at that cell number, then enter the access code back into our little pop-up-thingy to "verify" their cell number.
When we got the task, we were told that the API we would be hitting was up and running.  Of course, once we got the documentation and started hitting the endpoints, we found that yes, technically it was up... but we were just getting back static data.  No ability to start from Zero and walk along a path, happy or otherwise.
The documentation itself was robust enough that I figured, I can just mock this API, keeping it in line with the published documentation. Â So I went to my trusty generic Node server that I have, and started work. Â About 6 hours of total work later, I had a mocked API, complete with pre-populated test data, ready for my teammates to develop against.
I'm pretty proud of it: there are about 5 mocked endpoints, and I added a few development endpoints as well, so a Dev can look at the users in the test data and do a few other fun things like that. Â It's just local, so everyone had to pull it from my Git repository and spin it up on their local machine. Â But most of all, it was a lot of fun working back in the more familiar territory of Node again!
Commit Trepidation: I have been working for the last week or so on my first actual feature--not a change request, but the first time that I have built a new aspect of the web service from scratch. Â It's giving our service the ability to listen and respond to a button that might be set up (any time, any where, just when you least expect it!) on one of our pages, but with content and attributes and behaviour completely authored by another department.
I've really enjoyed working on it; in fact, it's been some of my most enjoyable time here so far as I've had the chance to pair program with one of my team members. Â
However, I'm realizing that I have some Commit Anxiety as I'm finishing it up. Â Is it really done? Â Is this code with my name on it entirely ready to go out into the world? Â Am I sure? Â It's a little nerve wracking getting ready for my first built-from-scratch functionality to go and play with the big boys.
Not committed nor merged yet. Â I'll keep you posted.

Many moons since I last posted on here. Â So much has happened on Downton Abbey! Â Edith's made off with her baby, Mary cut her hair, Miss Bunting bailed on everyone...!
And at work... I've been doing a lot of "deleting old code" for the last few weeks, which I have found to be a really boring job. Â And really nerve-wracking, when I'm deleting old code whose functionality I never ever ever knew. Â Like, I didn't know that this code even existed, let alone what it did, let alone what it still might do, let alone what might happen if I kill it.
So much stresses. Â I'm glad that over the last few days I got a more programmy task than janitorial task. Â But--as always--I'm really just happy to be here.
Java: What is a Java comparable? Â Is that a thing? Â Further investigation required.
