So... I went for a walk to clear my mind and refresh from all of the heaviness I've been feeling re: #SandaBland and the #LafayetteShooting this morning. I turn the corner, hear all this hollerin' and chanting...looked up and saw this. It's no secret that racism is still alive. There are symbols and reminders everywhere, everyday. The question has been raised, "How far will we go? When is enough enough? If we remove one thing, there will always be another." The issue is not the symbols of hate, the issue is the hate. I stood by and listened to this rally. A lot of what I was hearing was about "they", "them" and "those people" who want to take away "our heritage and history". One of the speakers even went on to talk about how he thinks if confederate flags are banned, African flags should also be banned. Um...is this real life? My thoughts: if the issue is in heritage and history, why not "reach across the aisle" to "those [black] people" and have a REAL conversation. What progress or understanding can they hope to beget by rallying amongst themselves? If it is not an issue of hate, then why not reach out to the black people that you don't hate? Hmmm??? It's called diplomacy, but that not exactly achievable when all efforts are being put into thinly veiling hatred with heritage. Racism is still alive, but they are hardly concealing it.
