A lot of people who suffer from chronic vertigo have that one activity that lets them go totally vertigo free for a bit. For Sir Patrick Stewart, it’s driving. For me, it’s swimming. While I’m floating in the water, the vertigo goes away. So does my oversensitivity. However, as soon as I get out I get hit with a ton of vertigo. But it’s worth it for those glorious few minutes when the world is totally still.

One of the worst things about being chronically ill is the number of doctors and specialists I’ve had to see over the years. Some were unavoidable. Every time I moved it meant a new team of doctors. However, that would account for less than a third of the number I’ve seen. The rest? Because they didn’t believe me. Being the person who cried wolf in a hospital or doctors’ office is one of the worst feelings in the world. Having to sit, or lay in a hospital bed, knowing with all your being that something is very wrong with you and yet the doctor insists otherwise. “You’re stressed,” they say. “It’s hormones,” or “just the flu.” I think the worse I got was “It’s all in your head. Typical in cases of trauma.” Yet, none of that makes sense. At all. Plus, I’ve still gotten those responses after getting a verifiable diagnosis. Finding a doctor that believes you is just as difficult as fighting the disease itself. Maybe more so. Because, after a dozen doctors have told you that it’s not actually a problem, you start to wonder if they are right. Maybe it is in your head. Maybe you are crying wolf. Except, it’s not. You are sick. Very sick. And sometimes doctors don’t show their true colors. They will claim to believe you and then treat you for depression instead of your illness (yes, this actually happened to me). It sets you back months or years at the time. Meanwhile, you just keep getting sicker. What’s really insidious though is how the second guessing lingers. Chronic illness makes you hyper aware of every pain and hair out of place. It makes you wonder if that is the next fire to put out, yet after having so many doctors tell you that nothing is wrong you become reluctant to even ask. So that by the time you are ready to ask, something else is really seriously wrong.
