𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐂.

Chelsea  let  out  a  soft,  incredulous  laugh  at  his  snark—head  tipping  back  just  enough  that  her  breath  fogged  in  the  cold  before  she  dragged  it  back  in.  Her  eyes  rolled  again,  slower  this  time,  like  she  wanted  him  to  see  how  little  his  explanation  impressed  her.  She  took  her  time  with  the  bottle,  another  slow  sip,  tongue  catching  briefly  at  the  rim  before  she  glanced  down  at  her  phone.  With  a  huff,  she  slid  it  down  into  the  inside  of  her  white  heeled  boot,  leather  creaking  faintly  as  she  tucked  it  away,  then  straightened  like  that  solved  at  least  one  problem  for  the  night. 

“Well  maybe  they  should,”  she  shot  back,  chin  lifting,  voice  sharp  with  bite.  “And  then  you’d  actually  solve  cases  instead  of  explaining  them  to  people  sitting  on  concrete  in  thirty-degree  weather.”

She  pushed  herself  fully  to  her  feet  then,  skirt  settling  against  her  thighs,  boots  scraping  as  she  took  a  few  restless  steps—never  quite  still,  energy  buzzing  under  her  skin  like  the  night  had  crawled  inside  her  chest.  She  hated  how  close  the  casino  felt  even  from  out  here,  hated  how  the  walls  seemed  to  hum  with  secrets  and  sirens  and  her  father’s  shadow.  And  she  hated—really  hated—that  Riley  Harrison  somehow  managed  to  make  all  of  it  louder  just  by  standing  there.  By  looking  at  her  like  he  was  always  halfway  through  a  thought  she  couldn’t  hear.

“Nothing  slipped.  This  just  isn't  the  first  time  and  it  definitely  won't  be  the  last.”  Her  shoulders  shrugged.  It  should  be  pointed  out  how  scary  it  was  how  all  this  didn't  actually  rattle  her.  Only  what  did  had  nothing  to  do  with  a  dead  body.

Her  gaze  flicked  back  to  him,  irritation  flashing  bright  and  unguarded  before  she  masked  it  with  a  crooked  smile  that  didn’t  quite  reach  her  eyes.  He  drove  her  insane.  Not  loud,  not  obvious—quietly,  persistently.  Made  her  second-guess  herself,  made  her  replay  moments  she  wasn’t  used  to  replaying.  Showing  up  at  his  house.  The  space  after.  The  way  nothing  had  happened  and  yet  everything  felt  different.  Long  stretches  where  he  vanished  back  into  his  world,  and  somehow—against  her  better  judgment—she  always  ended  up  right  back  here  with  him  again.  Feeding  into  this  persistent…  whatever…  that  was  supplying  him  with  something.  Chelsea  exhaled  hard  through  her  nose,  shaking  her  head  like  she  was  annoyed  at  herself  more  than  him.

At  the  mention  of  a  ride,  she  was  already  moving,  stepping  past  him  with  purpose,  boots  crunching  against  gravel  as  she  headed  away  from  the  doors.  She  could  easily  get  a  ride  if  she  wanted.  The  caravan  of  cowboys  was  bound  to  fetch  her  any  minute  on  her  father's  orders  anyways.  Still,  stubbornly,  “Mmm.  Nope.  I’m  walking,”  she  said  flatly,  not  slowing,  stubborn  written  into  every  line  of  her  posture.  She  glanced  back  over  her  shoulder,  eyes  bright,  challenging.  “And  you don't have to act to be oh so worried  about  me  freezing  to  death,  detective.  I’ve  survived  worse  than  a  little  distance.”

on  the  verge  of  correcting  the  blonde,  stating  that  he'd  explained  nothing,  the  bite  in  her  tone  and  the  annoyance  in  her  expression  had  stopped  him.  usually  the  detective  would  go  toe  to  toe  with  anyone  when  it  came  to  hurling  around  sass,  but  the  complete  flip  in  attitude  toward  him  had  thrown  riley  for  a  loop.  above  all  else  going  on  he  was  struggling  to  keep  up  with  what  she  apparently  wasn't  going  to  tell  him  was  bothering  her.

it  was  clear  this  woman  was  used  to  nothing  bad,  truly  bad,  touching  her.  the  cavalier  act  said  it  all  to  him.  maybe  she  was  more  bothered  by  something  with  a  guy  inside  or  that  her  night  of  fun  and  partying  was  ruined  rather  than  the  fact  that  someone  had  been  murdered.

this  wasn't  just  a  typical  homicide  either.  there  were  levels  and  layers  to  it  that  perhaps  weren't  sinking  in  because  chelsea  refused  to  give  them  the  time  of  day.  a  prominent  figure  of  montrose  had  been  killed  and  dumped.  that  blood  spilled  onto  paradise  valley's  border.  someone  was  instigating  and  igniting  a  flame.

then  came  the  flash  of  irritation  on  her  face  and  the  detective  realized  right  in  that  moment  that  he  didn't  want  to  waste  his  time  dealing  with  this  bullshit.  from  the  moment  he'd  approached  the  dancer  had  made  it  clear  he  wasn't  welcome  in  her  presence  so  he  stood  back  as  she  rose  and  began  to  stalk  off.

"you  wont  survive  stubbornness,"  he  finally  commented  but  any  snark  had  ceased.  this  wasn't  what  he  needed  right  now  and  she  clearly  didn't  want  anything  to  do  with  him.  the  complete  flip  was  mind  boggling.  "someone  will  come  to  your  rescue."  the  las  vegas  native  turned  away  and  headed  toward  the  parking  lot  where  his  car  was.

Tessa  listened  without  interrupting,  the  noise  of  the  casino  dulling  around  the  edges  as  Noa  spoke.  Her  gaze  softened  —  not  with  pity,  but  recognition  —  and  she  shifted  her  weight  to  mirror  the  other  woman’s  lean  against  the  pillar,  giving  her  space  rather  than  crowding  it.  She  didn’t  rush  to  fill  the  quiet  when  it  settled;  some  moments  deserved  to  breathe.

“Work  has  a  way  of  demanding  more  than  it  pays  for,”  Tessa  said  gently,  eyes  flicking  once  to  the  glass  in  Noa’s  hand  before  lifting  again.  “Especially  when  the  real  cost  is  time  you  don’t  get  back.”  She  paused,  then  let  out  a  small,  surprised  laugh,  shaking  her  head  at  herself.  “Sorry  —  I  swear  I’m  not  usually  this  metaphorical.  I’m  blaming  the  drinks.”  Her  glass  lifted  slightly  in  half-hearted  proof.  “It’s  a  weird  night.  And  it’s  barely  even  started.”

At  the  comment  about  her  demeanor,  Tessa  exhaled  again,  softer  this  time,  a  breath  that  hovered  somewhere  between  humor  and  honesty.  “I  don’t  think  my  reason’s  all  that  different,”  she  admitted.  “I’m  here  because  staying  home  felt  unbearable  tonight.  Because  sometimes  showing  up  —  even  when  it’s  the  last  thing  you  want  —  feels  like  the  only  way  to  keep  from  disappearing  entirely.”  Another  quiet  laugh  followed,  self-aware,  fleeting.  “See?  Definitely  the  drinks.”

She  offered  Noa  a  small,  understanding  smile.  “So  if  you  need  a  corner  to  breathe  in  for  a  minute,”  Tessa  added,  “you  picked  a  good  one.  I  don’t  mind  the  company  at  all.”

the  pretty  brunette  spoke  like  a  philosopher.  there  was  something  pensive  about  her  that  had  noa  intrigued  even  if  the  poetic  manner  of  speech  didn't  land  as  well  as  it  should've  with  the  likes  of  a  well-read  politician's  assistant.  in  fact,  the  brunette  felt  as  though  this  woman  would  be  amazing  to  chat  with  over  coffee,  she  was  just  .  .  .  distracted.  also  nervous.  definitely  anxious.

"it  is  a  weird  night,"  noa  chuckled,  head  angled  in  the  lithe  woman's  direction  while  her  gaze  panned  about  the  room  some  like  she  were  constantly  on  the  lookout  for  someone.  "fisherman,  bikers,  mobsters,  cowboys,  and  there  should  be  a  politician  in  there  too  but  he's  .  .  .  late.  all  sharing  an  open  bar  together."  it  sounded  like  a  bad  joke,  or  maybe  it  was  a  warning  sign.

"you're  worried  about  disappearing?"  interest  piqued,  something  about  that  had  resonated  with  noa,  but  she  couldn't  imagine  anyone  overlooking  this  woman.  "i  don't  think  it's  the  drinks,"  she  commented  thoughtfully,  a  gentle  and  friendly  smile  shaped  her  lips.  "i  think  you've  got  something  on  your  mind.  maybe  too  many  things.  i  can  see  the  weight  of  it  on  you."  she  could  recognize  the  grief  in  the  tall  woman's  hazel  eyes.

"thanks,"  noa  said  a  beat  later,  "for  sharing  your  quiet  space."  then  a  little  more  careful,  "i'm  a  good  ear.  you  know,  if  you  want  to  share  what's  unbearable."  she  too  had  the  weight  of  home  laying  guilt  on  her  back.

a joint rolled between his brims as he listened to his president speak , the prospect that was lingering around vanished just as quick as the other approach   ❛ not that i'm aware of - no order was given ------ ❜ the order would have came from the man before him but if roman himself did not know what was going on then some serious shit was brewing .  ❛ look , you know i don't really care about most of this shit that happens but : orders are orders but if your questioning the loyalty and honesty of your club then we have some problems , rome. ❜ tobias knew his loyalty could never be questioned : he had proved it - day in and day out.  ❛ you don't think if i heard something you wouldn't already know ---- . ❜

"you  should  care,"  the  outlaw  stated  as  blue  eyes  slightly  narrowed  as  he  regarded  his  sergeant  at  arms  in  front  of  him,  a  man  that'd  been  a  longtime  friend  and  loyal  to  him  and  the  club.  "you're  third  in  the  chain  of  command.  you  should  probably  know  what  the  fuck  is  going  on."  there  was  something  dark  in  roman's  rasped  voice.  his  shoulders  were  already  feeling  the  weight  of  what  was  about  to  come  down  on  them.  "the  syndicate  is  gonna  make  us  their  fall  guy.  history  proves  that."  there  was  also  their  expansion  toward  paradise  valley  to  consider  and  the  way  the  ranching  community  east  was  pushing  back  against  it.  the  syndicate  had  been  working  at  the  mc  president  to  use  force  and  invade  cowboy  territory.  now  a  major  strike  had  been  levied.  "i  know  how  convincing  they  can  sound.  i  know  some  might  fold  under  the  kind  of  cash  the  syndicate  can  offer."  briefly  roman  eyed  one  of  the  deputies  inching  a  little  closer.  "i'm  not  blaming  or  accusing  anyone.  we  need  to  get  ahead  of  this  before  all  the  decisions  are  made  for  us.  i'm  not  gonna  get  us  trapped  between  the  syndicate  and  the  cowboys."

Ten years. Blue eyes widened briefly at the tally, not because there was some sense of permanence behind a decade in one spot, but because it served as yet another reminder of how estranged they’d become. Glancing over at him, Jamie tipped his head to the side, quietly watching, calculating. It was like he could feel the energy rolling off his brother in waves– like static electricity threatening to crackle and pop if Jamie dared to reach out and touch him. He gripped his drink instead and lifted it to his lips again, “Never really been the calling kind of family, have we?” Pack up and find somewhere else? He chuckled into the rim of his glass before parting ways with it, “No can do, I’m afraid,” he supplied, shoulders lifting in a lazy, noncommittal sort of shrug. Now that he was near his child, there was no way Jamie was tucking tail and going elsewhere. He’d spent his whole life in that transient, nomadic state, going wherever the military ordered him. All of that was over now. Swallowing thickly, he hesitated for a moment, wondering just how much to divulge and how much to play close to the chest. “My kid’s here,” Jamie sighed, carding a hand through his hair and settling with the confession. “Already missed out on a lot of her life, couldn’t do it anymore, so,” he shrugged again, his shoulders rising with a bit more conviction this time, like his reason for being here didn’t require much more of an explanation than that, “I left the Navy a few months ago and took an offer in the ER here.”

they  were  brothers,  of  course  they  would  match  sass  for  sass,  and  since  he'd  left  las  vegas  in  the  dust  decades  ago  his  cheek  had  only  gotten  more  hard  edged.  "nah  but  there  really  fuckin'  should  be.  trying  to  save  this  god  forsaken  place  singlehandedly  it  seems."  which,  wasn't  a  stretch,  at  least  not  too  much.  the  place  wasn't  lawless  but  the  wicked  seemed  to  rule  and  had  no  qualms  about  the  destruction  they  caused  on  those  trying  to  live  good,  honest  lives.  it  was  bewildering  and  sobering  in  ways  riley  hadn't  expected  to  have  his  youngest  kin  here  now  amongst  all  of  this.  how  could  he  protect  jamie  from  the  syndicate's  reach?

the  presence  of  his  younger  brother  shifted  things  and  now  a  somehow  more  watchful  gaze  panned  the  crowd.  it  wasn't  that  his  youngest  sibling  couldn't  protect  himself  or  handle  the  bad  things  of  the  world,  hell,  the  first  time  they'd  been  reunited  it'd  been  aside  a  battlefield.  this  was  different.  "yeah,  well,  you  can  thank  your  mother  for  that,"  riley  grumbled.  she  was  the  reason  he'd  left  home,  not  that  their  father  hadn't  had  a  part  in  it,  and  she  remained  the  reason  he  had  never  returned.  "plus,  i've  been  a  little  busy."  a  shrug  and  gesture  of  his  arms  that  begged  the  question  'what  do  you  expect?'.  but  no  one  was  really  too  busy  for  a  phone  call.  especially  not  in  the  span  of  a  decade.

the  good  news?  jamie  was  intact  and  looked  healthy.  the  bad?  riley  now  had  one  more  thing  to  watch  over.  old  times  died  hard,  didn't  they?

it  was  what  had  spilled  from  his  brother's  mouth  next  that  had  shocked  him  the  most.  more  than  finding  his  brother  anywhere  close  to  montrose  and  in  the  mix  with  syndicate  members.  "your  kid?"  shock  and  maybe  even  a  little  hurt  flooded  his  blue  eyes.  sure,  he  hadn't  made  communication  easy  since  his  time  in  the  military  had  ended,  but  some  things  were  worth  a  little  more  effort  weren't  they?  "i  have  a  niece?"  the  worry  he'd  felt  had  doubled.  maybe  tripled.  "what  the  fuck,  jamie  .  .  ."  he  just  stood  there.  blinking.  incredulous.  "yeah,  well,  she  can  move,  too."  somehow  he  was  still  finding  a  voice  and  moving  through  this  moment.  maybe  it  had  something  to  do  with  his  training,  you  stop  pushing  through  you're  dead  .  .  .  but  his  mind  was  racing.  "until  you  find  a  new  place  in  a  new  city  don't  take  any  payouts.  don't  agree  to  forge  records  or  act  like  you  didn't  see  shit  that  you  definitely  did  see  in  the  er.  i'm  fuckin'  serious,  jame."

She shrugged a shoulder, a coy smile ghosting at the corner of her mouth, “I might be. At this point, I might be offended if I don’t win.” Though, truth be told, a new car wasn’t even on her radar tonight. She’d just simply wanted to show up for Le Syndicat, and she’d wanted to have fun doing it. “Maybe,” she supplied, though she’d never been the biggest gambler. When it came to deception and games, her poker face was better suited in a different arena altogether, but in the spirit of the evening, she’d never say never. “Oh, of course– if I’m gonna play, I’m gonna play to win.” Which would ultimately mean that she’d be following every move her sister told her to make.

Nearly snorting into her drink, Leyla eyed her sister incredulously at her warning. Of course, it wasn’t unexpected– it felt more like a running joke trying to determine which Boz was more put off by men on any given day. “Oh, come on– give me more credit than that,” Leyla quipped back, another grin tugging at her lips, “They wouldn’t know how to handle me anyway.” She gave her sister a pointed look then, “Same goes to you, though– don’t make me put a stiletto through someone’s neck.”

"don't  play  coy  with  me,"  sena  quipped  following  her  sister's  play  of  innocence.  there  was  a  slow  pointed  trail  her  gaze  took  down  the  plunging  neckline  of  her  sister's  dress  before  flicking  back  up  to  meet  leyla's  beguiling  eyes.  she  looked  amazing,  as  always,  and  there  was  an  air  of  pride  surrounding  the  poker  player  that  this  young  woman  was  her  bloodline.  "you  know  i  might  have  to  borrow  some  of  those  jewels  at  some  point,"  the  brunette  pointed  out  moments  before  she  took  a  sip  of  her  free  drink.  she'd  almost  wanted  to  pay  for  it  because  this  all  still  somehow  felt  like  a  debt  incurred  by  le  syndicat.

"i'm  sure  hakan  could  stack  the  odds  in  your  favor  .  .  ."  and  it  wasn't  that  leyla  needed  help  to  win.  again,  her  baby  sister  looked  phenomenal.  the  comment  was  more  pointed  and  her  attention  panned  away  from  the  artist  to  find  the  man  with  all  the  power  in  the  room  of  the  most  formidable  people.  sena  was  still  trying  to  decipher  what  that  connection  was  between  her  sister  and  the  syndicate's  underboss.  was  he  sweet  on  her?  there  was  no  blaming  the  man  for  that,  but  he  was  the  last  person  she  wanted  leyla  entangled  with  romantically.

when  it  came  to  gambling  she  much  preferred  leyla  stick  to  actual  games  and  not  finding  herself  ensnared  in  someone's  trap,  so  when  her  gaze  returned  to  the  pretty  brunette  she  was  sharing  a  drink  with  a  smirk  hooked  onto  her  lips.  "hey,  if  you  wanna  play,  i  could  always  watch  the  game  from  behind  you,"  sena  winked.  they  had  their  own  silent  language  that  she  could  use  to  guide  her  sister  into  some  easy  cash.

unable  to  help  it  the  brunette  grinned  as  her  sister  nearly  choked  on  her  drink.  "hey,  i'm  serious,"  she  claimed  with  humor  in  her  voice,  barely  keeping  her  own  laughter  at  bay.  after  her  ex-husband  sena  had  become  a  bonafide  man  hater.  "that's  true,"  the  professional  gambler  shrugged,  "you're  a  force.  but  it  doesn't  mean  some  handsome  idiot  would  try  and  .  .  .  we  are  drinking  tonight."  with  that  sena  lifted  her  glass  as  if  toasting  the  moment  then  sipped  from  it.  they  could  both  make  bad  decisions  under  the  influence.  "i  have  a  short  list  going  if  you  get  bored  and  want  to  change  the  color  of  your  stilettos."

Hands deep in his pockets, a scowl etched firmly on his lips, Dominic regarded the scene before him with laser focus and barely held restraint. Four rounds and barely more than a few bucks added, he watched as the man with the worst hand of the table called another bet, drawing growls of frustration from the watching crowd. ''Fuckin' calling station,'' he muttered under his breath with a shake of his head. It was hard to be back in a casino, harder still to watch a game unfold knowing how many moves he'd have corrected, changed or avoided in order to win. ''I can't watch him ruin this round,'' he declared with barely feigned pain, turning around and making to hide behind the person closest to him. ''Tell me when his turn's over,'' he demanded, keeping his eyes firmly shut, tall body bending to fit behind the smaller figure.

somehow,  despite  the  many  contrasting  emotions  that  battled  each  other  internally,  the  brunette  held  her  composure.  the  professional  had  decided  against  playing,  she  was  merely  a  spectator,  and  more  focused  on  the  activity  around  the  casino  floor  with  too  many  major  players  in  one  room.  but  his  voice  coming  from  a  poker  table  had  pulled  her  through  the  crowd  of  spectators,  leaving  her  to  glare  at  the  broad  shoulders  at  the  back  of  a  man  who  slipped  from  her  life  years  ago.

divorce  papers  left  in  exchange  for  all  of  her  money  he  hadn't  had  permission  to  take.

in  no  way  could  sena  tell  a  soul  a  thing  that  was  happening  with  the  cards  or  around  the  table.  usually  she  could  stand  on  the  sidelines  and  act  as  commentary  for  anyone  curious.  9  times  out  of  10  her  calls  were  accurate.  right  now?  her  vision  had  narrowed  to  one  very  particular  subject.

"figures  you'd  try  to  hide  behind  me,"  she  claimed,  tone  scathing,  her  figure  unmoving.  "i  thought  you  were  more  comfortable  with  robbery  than  this  .  .  ."

"i  didn't  give  any  orders,"  he  said  flatly,  tone  resembling  scraped  gravel,  as  sharp  blue  eyes  surveyed  the  casino  floor.  there  was  a  buzz  about  the  place,  it  hummed  with  low  conversation,  and  the  reactions  or  lack  there  of  were  what  interested  him  most.  that  and  who  looked  toward  the  mc.  "but  i  know  the  syndicate  is  gonna  lay  this  on  us."  the  setup  felt  strange  since  all  members,  himself  included,  were  in  attendance.  this  was  the  act  of  someone  trying  to  tip  the  scales  of  war,  to  ignite  a  flame,  and  as  quick  as  roman  could  be  to  violence  sometimes  he  didn't  want  to  be  the  first  to  snap.  "after  the  deputies  question  you  let  me  know  what  they're  asking.  that'll  give  us  some  clues."

"oh,  i'm  certain  they  did  it,"  roman  rasped  in  response,  his  jaw  tight  and  his  lip  nearly  curled  in  disgust  as  a  predator's  blue  gaze  drifted  toward  those  in  the  suits.  "but  i  know  they  gonna  try  to  pin  it  on  us."  the  ace's  president  had  already  been  sniffing  out  the  setup.  when  his  attention  returned  to  sabrina  his  expression  didn't  soften.  it  wasn't  a  reflection  of  his  opinion  of  her,  the  outlaw  was  on  edge  from  the  turn  of  events.  already  watching  his  back  and  surroundings  all  night  in  what  felt  like  a  viper's  pit  the  blond  felt  the  prickle  of  war.  it  wasn't  subtle  anymore,  it  was  the  buzz  of  overhead  lights  getting  louder  and  louder  before  they  burst.  "i  want  you  to  do  me  a  favor,"  roman  told  her,  didn't  ask,  "burrow  in  and  listen  closely.  find  out  as  much  as  you  can.  hit  me  with  any  updates,  big  or  small."

The  casino  had  changed  sometime  after  midnight  —  lights  still  bright,  music  still  humming,  but  the  air  beneath  it  all  had  gone  uneasy.  Marco  had  noticed  her  more  than  once  before  that  shift,  and  then  again  after  —  dark  hair  slipping  past  his  peripheral,  wide  watchful  eyes  catching  his  just  long  enough  to  linger.  Too  many  near-misses  to  ignore.  By  the  time  he  spotted  her  again,  the  buzz  sat  comfortably  in  his  chest,  loosening  his  grin  and  sharpening  his  interest.

He  plucked  a  fresh  drink  from  a  passing  tray  ironically  still  floating  about  and  slipped  into  step  beside  her,  easy  as  if  it  had  always  been  the  plan.  “I  don’t  usually  believe  in  fate,”  Marco  murmured,  tipping  his  glass  in  her  direction,  “but  running  into  the  same  woman  all  night  starts  to  feel  intentional.”  His  attention  lingered  —  not  just  on  her  beauty,  but  on  the  way  she  carried  herself.  Tall.  Poised.  Calculating.  Someone  who  didn’t  spook  easy.  “Place  is  starting  to  feel  a  little…  handsy,”  Marco  added,  lowering  his  voice  as  if  sharing  a  secret.  “Figured  we  should  probably  make  a  clean  escape  before  someone  decides  we  look  good  in  matching  cuffs.”  The  corner  of  his  smile  sharpened,  unmistakably  teasing.

“Kidding,”  he  assured,  eyes  gleaming.  “Mostly.”  He  angled  his  body  toward  the  exit  just  enough  to  make  the  suggestion  without  forcing  it.  “Drink  in  hand,  night  still  young  —  seems  a  shame  to  let  chaos  be  the  highlight.  What  do  you  say,  hermosa?”

the  night  hadn't  been  anything  special.  not  to  the  professional  gambler  in  the  room  at  least.  one  thing  sena  had  become  accustomed  to  with  the  syndicate  was  their  spectacles.  they  loved  the  whole  attract  and  distract  game  more  than  anyone  else  the  brunette  surmised.  the  reason  she  put  on  a  figure  hugging  black  dress  and  looked  the  part  for  the  night?  well,  it  wasn't  likely  for  any  reason  most  would  suspect.

faux  fur  coat  slipped  over  the  teasing  dress  the  poker  player  was  making  her  way  toward  an  exit  when  a  familiar  face  appeared  at  her  side  and  tipped  a  drink  her  way.  whether  it'd  been  intended  for  sena  or  not  she  took  it  and  sipped  from  it  as  they  continued  to  walk.  something  in  her  gaze  that  flashed  his  direction  as  the  rough  man  spoke  was  gleaming.

"some  would  call  that  stalking,"  she  teased  the  man  she  too  had  spotted  many  times  over  the  course  of  the  night.  brow  lifted,  her  expression  challenged  him  to  deny  it.  "or  it  just  takes  you  that  long  to  come  up  with  an  opening  line  .  .  ."  her  pace  wasn't  hurried  but  she  was  guarded  as  she  moved  through  a  field  of  snakes.

"we?"  movement  stopped,  sena  held  the  man's  dark  eyes  full  of  amusement  and  sipped  the  drink  she'd  lifted.  "are  you  a  racer?  going  from  zero  to  one  hundred  appeals  to  you  in  all  facets  of  life?"  the  brunette  was  smirking  and  intrigued  despite  herself.  going  home  and  alone  still  didn't  sit  well  with  her,  the  space  still  held  the  violation  that  occurred  within  its  walls,  and  law  enforcement  everywhere  actually  invested  in  a  crime  felt  like  a  slap  in  the  face.

maybe  she  needed  to  go  to  the  sheriff.  maybe  they'd  get  her  case  solved.

"bal,"  sena  held  out  a  wrist  for  him  to  appraise,  "these  wrists  don't  do  steel.  precious  metals  and  gems  only."  but  .  .  .  she  took  a  step  toward  him,  smirk  beginning  to  show.  "where  do  you  live?  because  the  last  place  i  want  to  go  right  now  is  montrose."

the  twinkle  in  her  eyes  could  have  been  a  reflection  of  the  casino  lights,  or  due  to  him  calling  her  hermosa,  she'd  let  him  be  the  judge.  he  looked  strong  and  formidable,  safe  if  something  bad  were  to  approach  her  again,  but  he  was  also  a  stranger.  for  some  reason  that  didn't  stop  her  from  taking  another  step  forward.

some   people   carried   an   aura   the   way   others   wore   cologne   —   heavy,   deliberate,   impossible   to   ignore.   roman   kane   was   that   kind   of   man.   joni   knew   the   name   long   before   she   ever   stood   in   the   same   air   as   him;   montrose   had   a   way   of   whispering   it.   when   he   moved,   the   room   adjusted   —   not   loudly,   not   theatrically   —   just   enough.   she   felt   it   in   the   subtle   shift   of   shoulders,   the   quiet   recalibration   of   space.   her   fingers   tightened   around   her   glass   before   she   realized   they   had,   cool   stem   biting   into   her   palm.   too   many   opposing   currents   in   one   room   tonight.   law.   syndicate.   old   money.   old   grudges.   something   had   already   snapped   once   —   it   could   again.   and   if   his   crew   had   a   hand   in   something   this   brazen,   then   they   were   either   far   more   dangerous   than   she’d   given   them   credit   for…   or   far   more   reckless.   neither   option   settled   well.

it  wasn't  uncommon  ⸻  being  stared  at  or  gawked  over  for  one  reason  or  another.  most  of  the  time  it  had  something  to  do  with  the  leather  kutte  he  wore  with  pride.  it  hadn't  really  mattered  where  the  person  was  from;  montrose,  timber  cove,  or  even  paradise  valley  ...  the  reputation  of  the  patch  far  preceded  those  that  wore  it.

maybe  him  most  of  all  and  not  solely  because  he  was  the  president,  but  because  he  was  violently  aggressive  in  defending  and  protecting  the  club.

when  he'd  caught  the  eyes  of  the  brunette  it'd  taken  roman  a  moment  to  place  her,  but  when  it  clicked  she  worked  in  the  medical  examiner's  office  the  outlaw  made  his  way  through  the  crowd  toward  her.  people  parted  like  he  was  moses  in  the  sea  as  danger  and  power  radiated  off  of  him.  near  her,  still  holding  her  gaze,  the  biker  found  himself  moving  to  her  side  rather  than  standing  in  front  of  her.  he  was  keeping  watch  on  the  crowd  and  was  careful  what  he  put  his  back  to.

"i  suppose  beautiful  is  subjective."  when  roman  looked  around  he  saw  it  all  for  what  it  was.  "to  me  ...  it's  a  circus.  if  you  look  around  you'll  spot  all  the  sideshows  easily."  his  purpose  upon  recognizing  her  was  to  feel  her  out.  one  thing  he  knew  for  certain  was  that  the  body  would  wind  up  in  her  office,  whether  she'd  be  performing  the  autopsy  or  not.

"maybe  you'll  find  mercy  in  his  death,"  the  outlaw  rasped,  baiting  the  hook  that  would  eventually  come.

the  moment  she  saw  recognition  hit  in  the  woman's  eyes,  the  one  that  thankfully  had  a  heavy  pour  into  the  drink  she'd  handed  off  to  her  just  a  bit  ago,  noa  felt  the  sting  hit  her  eyes.  unfortunately  her  natural  reaction  to  stress  and  overwhelm,  sometimes  even  anger,  was  tears.  but  then  there  was  a  sturdy  no  and  it  seemed  to  be  exactly  what  the  late  mayor's  assistant  needed.  before  they  even  brimmed  and  spilled  down  her  cheeks  the  excess  moisture  dried  up.

"yeah  ..."  once  more  she  buried  her  face  in  her  hands  but  then  swept  her  hair  back  as  she  attempted  to  find  some  resolve  and  straighten  up.  "mortgage,  my  dad's  medical  bills,  groceries,"  the  brunette  somewhat  repeated,  mind  clearly  spinning  by  the  wild  look  in  her  eyes  as  the  wall  she  knew  she  was  going  to  hit  soon  when  everything  was  due  would  derail  all  the  progress  she'd  made.  "and  it's  not  like  i  can  ask  for  a  reference  either  now."  head  shook  following  that  insensitive  statement.  she  wasn't  meaning  to  come  across  that  way  but  at  least  this  woman  didn't  seem  to  be  judging  her.  there  was  understanding  and  situational  awareness  that  said  there  was  a  fruit  basket  or  flowers  in  this  woman's  future.

"do  you  serve  by  the  gallon?"  noa's  little  smile  made  an  appearance,  a  shine  through  the  darkness  and  gloomy  forecast  of  her  upcoming  days.  "the  sheriff  said  i  wasn't  a  suspect  but  yeah  ...  i  guess  this  makes  sense  why  i  couldn't  get  ahold  of  him  all  night."  then  she  nearly  crumpled  again.  "i  was  so  mad  at  him,  too.  i'd  been  cursing  him  all  night.  fuck.  he's  dead."

The night was slow, like most around here, though Sadie would argue things had even further slowed down following the mayor's murder. As if people were being cautious, wary of staying out late, afraid of being the next to drop dead.. or rather afraid of being caught at the wrong place, in the wrong time. She'd already rearranged the shelves twice, restocking what's been missing and she'd now retired to the front counter, doodling over the margins of yesterday's newspaper edition. She heard the doors opening, then closing. Footsteps squacking against the concrete floor. She didn't flinch, didn't even bother to look up and see who is it until she felt a presence nearby, a shadow stretching across the front page where news of the latest investigations filled half of it. Only then did her hazel hues glanced up. "It's pretty sick, huh?" She mused, referring to the recent events. At least she was one of the lucky few, who chose to miss all the fun that night, having a solidified alibi of working another night shift at the gas station. "Anyway, what can I do for you?"

out  in  timber  cove  he'd  felt  far  away  from  the  drama  in  the  aftermath  of  a  mayor  that  hadn't  meant  anything  to  him.  of  course  the  anchor's  owner  hadn't  wish  or  wanted  anyone  dead  but  jeremy  was  a  bit  apathetic.  it  made  no  real  difference  to  his  life.  or  so  he  thought.

when  he  entered  the  store  he'd  gone  right  to  the  cooler's  doors  and  grabbed  himself  a  red  bull  then  headed  to  the  counter  where  the  redhead  greeted  him.  "big  city  life,  i  s'pose,"  he  replied  with  a  shrug.  "i  don't  go  out  that  way  ..."  on  the  verge  of  saying  often  jeremy  paused  and  then  shook  his  head  slightly  and  left  the  statement  at  it's  abrupt  end  because  that  was  correct.  "i  hear  it's  fairly  common  there."  and  it'd  started  to  bleed  into  timber  cove  but  that  wasn't  exactly  gas  station  counter  fodder.

"uhh  ...  just  this,"  he  gestured  to  the  can  then  absently  toward  the  window  where  the  pumps  were  outside,  "and  to  pay  up  on  three."  his  truck,  his  pride  and  joy  aside  from  the  generational  family  restaurant,  sat  waiting  to  go  home.
