obsessed with the quieter acting on siddig's part, particularly in the scene where his parents show up in sisko's office - loveee the way julian just doesn't speak after his 'oh... my god' until the conversation ends. it seems like so little but it works wonders for the atmosphere of the scene when you notice

always rubs me wrong how dax and sisko fail to pick up on just how deeply uncomfortable julian is in this scene - there's a moment of acknowledging how awkward things are but it doesn't really develop into concern in the way i'd hope

i laughed numerous times because richard bashir is just that fucking stupid - also adore how expertly julian winds him up at the dinner table, you can tell he's been waiting years to get these jabs in

'-the fact that you were genetically enhanced as a child.' oh my god richard. you're in the fucking infirmary. the fact that this man kept a secret for over twenty years is the real surprise (i understand plot gotta plot but come on. this was not the moment this reveal warranted.)

imagine forcibly enhancing your son's brain then constantly berating him for 'thinking he's smarter than you'... yeah bro that's what you ordered (wonderfully insidious manipulation here, i love how quickly but deeply they establish the existence of years of pain)

i'm still not buying the amsha sympathy angle i'm sorry, if you truly loved your son as he was you would've focused your energy on creating a more accessible world rather than conforming him to be able to achieve normative success

wow we really switched up from 'we did this because we love you' to 'richard did this and now he's going to deal with it' are we a team or aren't we (i vote no and also amsha get a divorce)

i missed sisko's 'take your time' on my first watch - this episode could've done with way more sisko but the moments we do get are imo perfect contrasts to julian + richard. key word that comes to mind is 'gentle'; the scenes with his parents are claustrophobic with the weight of the past, the moments with sisko are focused on support and relatability. underrated dynamic. also this is why sisko is everyone's dad

miles using the darts board to talk about the enhancements in a less serious way is so brilliant, it's such a lowkey and comforting way to reassure julian that everything's okay, and it's such a miles way to go about it. one of my fav episodes for their friendship there i said it
