If you are just like me, then I am sure you also want to have a great and up-to-date wardrobe. Unfortunately, that requires spending money, obviously. Being a student often involves strict budgeting, so you wont want to spend too much money on clothing that is trend proof. Â We all know that trends change and keeping up with everything might be just a little too much.
Despite all this, I have good news! You can get all this without spending ridiculous amounts of money. How, you may ask. Does ’Secondhand Bazar‘ say anything to you? If not, let me break it down for you.
There are few events around with the same name, but this specific one is hosted by Student House in Aarhus and is a monthly event. Although, keep in mind that this is not on the same date every month, but it always on a Saturday at the beginning of the month, starting at 12pm and finishing at 15pm. They are announced on Facebook as events.   Â
Why should you visit the Secondhand Bazar?
Because:
1. It’s easy on your pocket
2. You get the chance to haggle
3. You can find really nice quality items
4. There are lots of things to choose from
5. You help to reduce waste by buying or selling second-hand clothes - recycle!
You can take part as seller or buyer. If you want to sell, then you will have to buy a ticket for a stand on the Facebook event page. They will provide all useful information there, but it’s in Danish, so you might need some help from Google Translate.
Be prepared to find a bargain
If you want to buy, then need to be prepared. Come along with:
a. Cash or MobilePay app
b. A bag
c. Punctuality - arrive on time, because the best items sell first
d. A lot of patience – these events can get quite crowded and you might have to wait in line
This event gained a lot of attention since the first time I attended last year. Lots of people look forward to the bazars, using this occasion to change up their wardrobe.
You can expect to find:
a. Clothes - tops and bottoms
b. Coats
c. Shoes
d. Accessories
e. Cosmetics
Most items are used, but if you’re lucky, you can get your hands on clothes with tags still on at great prices. Also you can find some high-end brands that not all of us are ready to pay for ’impulsively‘. Disclaimer - If you are a guy, it might be hard for you to find boys selling, but not impossible. For example, last time I saw at least three guys with a stand, and many other times I have seen boyfriends joining their girlfriends to sell, so there is hope.
Now that you know about it, and maybe feel inspired, get ready, because there is one coming up soon on Saturday June 4th. I hope to see you there!
Newcomers to inner city Aarhus will surely be surprised, from time to time, to see piles of furniture in the street.
It’s not uncommon to walk past an IKEA mattress and shelving on the way to lectures. Or a set of chairs and a vanity unit en route to the office.
Thankfully, this isn’t usually a sign of a lack of civic pride. More often than not it’s a pile for Storskrald to deal with.

It’s a great service for people living in an apartment who don’t have a car.

I have lived here for a while now, four years in fact, so I can say I have a pretty good understanding of Danish weather. It's unstable! And to be honest, you do not need four years to figure that out, but if you let it, it can affect you, especially if you are coming from a different climate for a long stay.
I was not used to having my whole wardrobe on display the entire year, neither was I used to crazy weather fluctuations! You can’t trust the weather here. I really did have a hard time adjusting; especially my mood, work flow and social life were affected, because all I wanted was to be far away from the cold, wet and dark outside. Stopping yourself from living while it is cold will not help at all, trust me.
This is what helped me feel better, stay positive and get back on track with everything:
1. Make it cozy                    Â
For the days when we can’t be bothered to be out, we should make our living environment enjoyable! If you lived here for a little while you may have already noticed that Danes love candles, blankets and coffee! They have them in their houses, as well as when you go out. So, do yourself a favor and cozy up your room. Grab a coffee or tea and perhaps a book and make the best out of it!
2. Meet a friend   Â
It is always easier to go trough bad times (and bad weather) with a friend. So call up a coffee meeting and catch up with each other. Use DiscoverCity.dk to help you choose a great spot!
3. Visit a museum     Â
While you still want to be warm and indoors, you can choose to visit an indoor museum. There is always something new to see! Visit Aros, Moesgaard Museum, Kvindemuseet  (the women’s museum) or even Den Gamle By (the old city) if it is not so bad outside. Pick up a welcome pack from Citizens' Service (at Dokk1) when you get here and get discounts or free entry in different places when using the vouchers.
4. Attend events that make you smile     Â
This young city, Århus, the city of smiles, is very active when it comes to event choices. There is something for everyone’s taste, with topics such as education, Danish systems, networking events, creativity and culture. You can also stay updated with the DiscoverCity newsletter. An old habit of mine is to check the Musikhuset Århus homepage to find concerts of classical music to attend, and lots of them are free.
5. Host a movie night                 Â
If you are a student, then you understand the money struggle and that we can’t always afford to go out for movies. As an alternative to a movie night out, you can host one yourself. This is cheaper and cozier and for sure, more fun. Not only you will see a movie together, but you get to socialize and make new friends! So, call your friends, pick a movie, grab some snacks and drinks and enjoy a great evening together!

Now the weather has decided to be more cooperative, it feels more enticing to sit outside at lunchtime, doesn't it?
And, when you sit outside, you notice things. Like enormous statues that you've probably passed a hundred times and never stopped to examine. It's good to pause. Otherwise, particularly in a city, life can seem like a very fast slide show.
Today, I took my lovely sandwich, freshly made in Linda's (opposite the bike parking outside Magasin), and walked through Stor Torv towards the cathedral. Next to the cathedral is the Equestrian Statue of Christian X in Domkirkepladsen.
How did I miss this? It seems half the size of the church from some angles and it dwarfs everything beneath.
HRH Christian was king of Denmark from 1912 to 1947 and the only ever King of Iceland between the first and second world wars.
He was quite disliked for his distaste for democracy, but won hearts and minds during the German occupation of Denmark when he insisted on riding, defiantly, through the streets of Copenhagen. Unaccompanied by guards.
There's a clever QR Code plaque on the statue's plinth that you can scan with your phone for more info.
By the time I leave to go back to work, a tiny crowd has gathered to see what I'm finding so fascinating. They stand, heads bent backwards, feeling suddenly small.

On the 6th of May 2016, students from Aarhus University once again welcome spring with a rather unusual sports event. Hint: it involves beer. Lots of it.
For most Danish people the word kapsejlads probably does not have a special meaning, since it is just the Danish word for regatta. For the students and employees of the university and people from Aarhus in general it is a little bit different though. It certainly doesn’t resemble the photo above.
Even though there are still boats involved in this event, this is by far the only similarity it has with what people have in mind when thinking of a regatta.
12 teams, representing the universities’ faculties, with 5 team members each, take on the rogue waters of the university lake to fight for fame and fortune. The rules of the event are fairly easy: everyone has to empty a bottle of beer as fast as humanly possible, spin around the bottle ten times, jump into the boat and get to the other side of the lake, have another beer to spin around afterwards and roar back to the other side to let the next team member do the same thing.
The event officially starts at 8am, but rumour has it that you should get to the park at 6am to secure yourself a nice spot. So if you want to see how one of your future doctors, lawyers or politicians empties a bottle of beer in under four seconds or participates in a nude run, you’d better get there early. Also you should bring a blanket or something else to sit on.
It's a great week to get together with your friends and those friends you simply haven't met yet. There are lots of fun activities going on this week, including the SPOT Festival, Denmark Eats Together (Danmark Spiser Sammen) and Dansens Dag. There's no excuse not to have a fantastic time with each other.
