The new dna identifications that were announced today by the university of Waterloo have put to rest a debate that’s been happening since 1859; whose skeleton was found alongside the “Peglar Papers.”
The papers contained a few written documents as well as some of Harry Peglars certificates, which at first lead people to the obvious assumption it was Harry Peglars skeleton. But the person was found wearing a stewards uniform, which would not be something that Peglar would wear, which lead to theories that maybe it was a friend of Harry’s carrying his belongings after his death, (the reason the romance between Peglar and Bridgens was established to explain it since the real life Bridgens was a steward.)
Today the university of Waterloo who did the DNA testing confirmed that the skeleton found with the papers was Harry Peglar, making him the first sailor of the Terror to be positively identified, and putting the mystery of the skeleton ti rest. It’s most likely that given how far south the skeleton was found, clothing had become a scarce resource and people had likely began stripping the dead as they fell to keep warm. The university of Waterloo also announced the identification of John Bridgens and two other sailors from the Erebus. To this day five skeletons have been identified as sailors from the Erebus, and a sixth Erebus sailor in the form of doctor Goodsir, who was identified in 2019 after being buried under the mistaken identity of Lieutenant Le Vesconte. Harry Peglar is the only sailor identified from the terror.
