Stuff and Junk

In troubled times, many people turn to their bible, or the torah, or the tao te ching, or The Big Lebowski, or whatever is meaningful to them for guidance.

If you’re unfamiliar with the EDF series, it’s basically about nothing but smashing giant alien ants, mechs, and godzilla type monsters as just a little dude or dudette soldier. It’s a really budget game with really cheesey.... everything but it’s the only game that does what it does. 

What I’m saying is, the NSA could really use a cute rodent mascot. Maybe something like this, with big ears?

Back in my day, if we wanted to play pocket monsters on the go, we have to find spots where there was enough light to see the unbacklit screens but not so much that there was glare. Playing at night in the car meant playing a few steps every couple of seconds as the street lamps passed by.

Now there are just roving bands of kids on the streets and in the parks with their phones out, talkin bout gyms and charmanders.

Evolve went free to play a day or so ago, and I’ve been playing it a bit, so I thought I’d write out some first impressions.

First of all, it has some touches that really show that at some point, they really cared about production values. There are quite a few lines of dialogue between characters that help build out a universe beyond what you see, and it does worldbuilding that you rarely get in multiplayer focused games. On top of that, both the graphics and in game audio are absolutely fantastic.

That said, the game does a really poor job of explaining important gameplay elements to new players. There are only good tutorials for the monster and hunter that everyone starts with, which doesn’t help much since every character is different, and even within the same class, there are important nuances to know.

Since there has to be one of each class on the hunter side, it’s very easy to initially get stuck with someone you are unfamiliar with. Everyone on the team absolutely needs to pull their weight at all times, so this can result in lopsided matches which range from quick and merciful to drawn out and boring.

However, once you get some time in and get a better understanding of a character, and once you get matched with people who have done the same, the game becomes a lot of fun as tension build between both sides trying to stay alive while doing enough damage to have a chance of finishing off their opposition. These matches get hectic in a way where it feels like everyone is controlling there own little bit of chaos, and I mean that in a really fun way.
