Minister for Education Jan O'Sullivan has said she is determined that students who have been in the asylum system in Ireland for five years will be entitled to pay the same fees as Irish students from September.
Last year 4,300 people were housed in direct provision centres.
One-third of those were children.
More than one-in-five had been there for over seven years.
Editorial on Direct provision
10 April 2015 marks 15 years of the Direct Provision System in Ireland. The date was marked with a moments silence for the years of limbo, the children growing up, and the lives lost in the Direct Provision system. People met at 1pm outside the Department of Justice and were invited to say a few words and to stand with people in the asylum system in Ireland in solidarity as the call to #EndDP was reiterated.

Here’s a poem I wrote for Comhlamh fifteen years ago, on the introduction of Direct Provision. They launched a booklet and asked me to say a few words. I read the booklet, was horrified, and wrote this poem.  It’s with a sense of shame that I submit it, fifteen years later, with Direct Provision, supposedly introduced as a temporary measure, still in force. I’ll be performing it, with musical accompaniment by Brian Fleming, at the Sheehy-Skeffington Human Rights School in the Irish Institute Dublin on 18th April.

Why do we impose on others what we do not wish for ourselves? Given our colonial and migrant history is it not possible to imagine a different scenario than that imposed by the dominant colonising attitudes of the past in regard to those who are different and destitute as we once were? Is it too much to hope that new solutions can be proposed and thereby be leaders rather than followers as we approach a centenary of national independence? In hope
