look at me like youβd die for me
stuff in the secret history thatβs not even that abnormal like literally just a normal part of being in college
- frankly? the fact that richard becomes friends with them so quick and is likeΒ βthese are the best friends of my life we will hang out forever and ever and everβ even though anyone with an outsiderβs perspective would be likeΒ βbro these people are weird and toxic as hellβ
- you canβt sign up for classes that seem like they would be very easy to sign up for and the only explanation an advisor will give you is thatΒ βprofessors are weird about this kind of stuffβ and youβre likeβ¦ isnβt thatβ¦ your jobβ¦ to get me into the class anyway???
-Β βΒ βwere you at lunch?β she meant had i been out of the room yet that day. i said i hadnβt.β
- when henry is like richard you were in stem for a hot minute right? can you do this extremely complex calculus/chemistry problem for me? and richard is like well first of all chemical substances are measured in moles and henryβs like whatβs a mole
- that moment when richard is pacing frantically around his room thinkingΒ βoh my god iβve been in college for three years and i still have no idea what i want to do with my life oh my god oh my god and i have to fill out these financial aid papers right fucking now because my major no longer existsβ lmao thatβll happen
- the fact that simultaneously itβs the most action-packed and plot-twist-filled book ever and yet if you read closely sixty percent of the book is likeΒ βi woke up late. after class i did homework for five hours. no one talked to me. then i went and ate dinner at the dining hall. nobody talked to me there, eitherβ. thatβs exactly what college feels like!
- when richard finds out his friends committed murder and immediately has to finish his essay thatβs due that day
- when they kill bunny and thatβs the week that julian assigns them so much work that none of them would be able to do it even under normal circumstances
- when francis is likeΒ βrichard you need to drive me to the hospital i think iβm having a heart attackβ and the doctor is likeΒ βwhat you have is anxietyβ and francis is like nah that canβt possibly be it
-Β βmetahemeralismβs gotta be the ticket here, see?β

You need motivation to study? Let me introduce you to spiteful studying. When you study a subject to prove someone wrong. When you spend hours writing up notes so that you can get that grade and smile smugly at the teacher who predicted you a lower grade. Find someone to prove wrong, it can be a teacher, a parent, friend or just to prove society that youβre so much more capable then they say you are!
Trust me, it works.
dark academia study techniques
rewriting your notes, over and over and over again, not worrying about the neatness but paying close attention to each and every word
muttering every bit you know by heart under your breath as you walk down the streets
studying early in the morning, focusing on one sentence or chapter and pondering it through the day
researching things that you have questions about on your own, finding books on that subject and leafing through them
reciting your notes dramatically to your household companion or your stuffed animal
challenging yourself to think, speak, write and consume media only in your target language
eating certain snacks with different subjects and letting the smells trigger your memories
associating each subject to someone you know by sight only
romanticising bits that you have difficulty getting interested in
chanting your notes at night on a classical tune

hi!! iβm starting my BA in history this fall and i plan on minoring in museum studies! (which i just noticed you have a masters in!!! wild!!!) i just wanted to say i love your account! and i was wondering if you had any advice!
Hi! Oh wow thanks so much!! Thatβs so sweet of you to say!
Thatβs very exciting!! I wish you all the best with your studies!! Hereβs some advice I can offer you as you go through your studies
Have fun! Seriously. Have fun with your studies.
Study the subjects you love/have a lot of interest in
But also study some subjects youβd otherwise never explore. For example, I took an Islamic History course and a Russian Revolution course Β because why not even though I wanted to focus on Colonial America. Itβs good to learn about a lot of different subjects
Get to know some of your professors. Talk to them about the subjects you like, ask them questions, etc. Their knowledge and their resources will be invaluable. I still speak with several of my undergrad professors and theyβve helped me with resumes and job connections.
Keep really good notes during your lectures! Make sure to keep them organized and neat and try to write down as much as you can. They will prove to not only be useful for your course studies but I continue to refer to my notes now years after Iβve graduated.
If you can, physically write your notes rather than typing them. Even if this means writing them down after the class time in a notebook. The process of writing cements things in your brain better than typing them out. Writing things more than once is even better for memorizing things.
Youβll write a lot of essays so be prepared for that. Make sure you vet your sources well and credit properly.
When it comes to essay exams, it always helped me to write out a few sample essays and outlines beforehand based on the subjects on the exam. It helped calm my test anxiety if I knew how I was going to structure the essays already.
Do internships! As many as you can handle because not only will they give you great practical experiences in museums/historical societies/etc but the contacts you make at them will be so useful in the future.
Try to keep in touch with professors, classmates, internship advisors etc for the same reasons as above
Make timelines. It can help you understand the progression of events more easily
Try to teach what youβre learning to someone else every now and then, even if itβs a history major study group type of thing. The act of teaching it to someone else can help you remember it and understand it better.
And a few that are specific to the Museum Studies :)
This one is for after your degree is done really but good to know. Be open to relocating for work. Iβm currently not willing to move from my home but I know if I really want the jobs I want I may need to move and Iβm okay with that.
Volunteer and intern at a variety of museums. Science, art, natural history, etc. Get a variety of experience
Take classes in a variety of subjects from collections care and exhibition studies to business administration and marketing. Itβs important to learn about all aspects of museums
Follow some museums on twitter and join some museum professional Facebook groups. Itβs sounds silly but thatβs a really good way to keep up with what museums are up to and meet fellow museum people.
