Shred and Smoke

What is existence, really? Surely a question without an answer.

I saw a one-armed man today.

No arm there; lost, blown away.

I had been thinking of something else,

Those dreams; lost, flown away.

 I saw a forest with no trees today.

No green leaves, all cold clay.

I thought about all the paper

I’ve wasted, thrown away.

 I wanted to smile at someone today.

But with hate all around, I frowned in dismay.

I couldn’t believe we were out of time,

The world could have ended today.

An ode, to memories;

Residual feelings

Friends and enemies

  To help you through

And throw you into

Ecstasy and anxiety.

  An aged look at society;

And the way it used to be,

Come and gone, ceased to be.

  Reminiscing,

Remembering everything

Our memory is our history.

The camera focused into view,

It pictured only you;

With your smile like a needle and thread,

And a raincloud over your head.

 For once you step out of the dark,

And our eyes plunge into my heart.

I dance on up to the moon,

As you walk back into your gloom.

 I wait for your return,

For your eyes, I’ve come to yearn.

And without you in my needful view,

The sun and the moon began to argue.

 The dancing stars no longer shine,

The midnight breeze begins to whine.

But then I breathe in your scent;

Maple leaves and peppermint.

 As the sight of the owl’s talon

Meets the eye of the raccoon,

We fly on up to the moon.

Now everything seems so right;

 The protection of the clouds,

Dancing by moonlight.

Christmas feels like

Your favorite warm pajamas

And smells like

Something sweet in the oven.

It feels like a crowded table,

And the sound of acoustic guitar

Over the sound of hushed conversation

And the clinking of silverware.

 And somewhere under the table

It feels like cold noses and wagging tails

Waiting for a treat; turkey, ham, pumpkin pie,

Or just a bite of anything special to eat.

 It looks like lights

Hung around the tree,

Around the house,

All in the streets.

It looks like snow, or ice, or sleet;

It looks like peace on Earth to me.

 It sounds just like Santa Claus,

So the kids pretend to sleep.

Mom and dad will eat the cookies,

And slide gifts under the tree.
