āI aināt draft dodging. I aināt burning no flag. I aināt running to Canada. Iām staying right here. You want to send me to jail? Fine, you go right ahead. Iāve been in jail for 400 years. I could be there for 4 or 5 more, but I aināt going no 10,000 miles to help murder and kill other poor people. If I want to die, Iāll die right here, right now, fightinā you, if I want to die. You my enemy, not no Chinese, no Vietcong, no Japanese. You my opposer when I want freedom. You my opposer when I want justice. You my opposer when I want equality. Want me to go somewhere and fight for you? You wonāt even stand up for me right here in America, for my rights and my religious beliefs. You wonāt even stand up for my right here at home". Ā - Muhammad Ali
Itās pretty plain to see.
Iām here to listen and learn. I try to speak up when I think it ads value/support. But if Iām wrong, Iām sorry. Please let me know so I can improve. Thank you.
The cops who killed her are still freeĀ

āThe critics used to call me the honk man. Mike Levin said I had a cardboard sound and that I couldnāt play my horn. You dig? That made it harder to play my horn. Thatās why I donāt put the kids down. Theyāre all playing. It depends on whether you dig them. Thatās why I always let my little kiddies play solos. That way they donāt bother me when I solo. In fact, sometimes I get bawled out by people who want to hear me play more, but I believe if youāre paying a man to play, and that man is on the bandstand and can play, he should get a chance to tell his story.ā Lester Young
Your Opinion Matters
Iāve been refraining from being an activist on the social media as of late. Mainly because I think social media activism is kind of silly. But also out of frustration and disappointment in our current state of affairs, and our two terrible choices for president.
But recent events have compelled me to say a few things. Iād like to start by asking a question. If I were to say to you, āYour opinion mattersā, would you take offense to that? Would you tell me that Iām being exclusionary? Would you say, āWell sure, but what about everybody elseās opinion? Donāt all opinions matter?ā Of course you wouldnāt. Because Iām not invalidating other opinions by saying that. Iām focusing on you. Iām telling you that your opinion matters. Because it does. Of course other opinions matter. And generally speaking Iād have to agree that all opinions matter. But weāre not talking about other opinions. Weāre talking about yours. The truth is that all lives do, in fact, matter. But weāre not talking about all lives. Weāre talking about the lives of those who have been marginalized. The lives of those who have disproportionately died at the hands of police (and others, I see you Trayvon) while unarmed. Weāre talking about the lives of those who have had disproportionately more severe sentences for the same crimes, and who disproportionately make up the prison population. Their lives matter. Just as much as yours.
Saying that black lives matter is not an exclusionary statement. Itās an inclusive statement.
Hey! These lives matter! You know, the ones youāve been ignoring. These people matter too!
The āall lives matterā retort is a ploy. An attempt at dismissal. Like saying, āyeah yeah, your opinion matters. Everyoneās opinion matters. Shut up.ā Iām sure youāve heard something along those lines at some point in your life. And thatās what weāre saying when we respond with āall lives matterā. Itās bullshit. Itās dismissal and further marginalization. Itās got to stop.
Iām white. Iāve never felt marginalized to any extent worth mentioning. But Iāve seen my friends who are not white be stopped for no good reason. Questioned, asked why they were running when I was running too. Iāve seen a black roommate of my momās be handcuffed on his knees in his own front yard only to be released after my white mom said he lives there. Mind you, my mom hadnāt produced any evidence that she lived there. But hey, they took her word for it.
Two more men killed in two days. Two more families ruined because of snap judgements. Two more moments that have become all too normal.
This brings me to last night. 5 cops were killed, and another 6 injured. This is heart breaking as well, and nothing but destructive. My heart aches for their families, and their colleagues. This type of violence, born of anger will make things worse. And that sucks (to put it simply). We need perspective and understanding. Now there will be more clouded vision and judgement. Because two dumbasses with guns just destroyed lives, and set fire to a positive movement. I hope #BLM will not suffer because of these fools. This shit scares me. It scares me for my friends who are not white. It scares me for my cop uncle, who is a good man and a wonderful father. He is basically an amazing human being. It scares me for everyone involved.
It scares me that Iāll have to one day explain to my son that because heās white, he has privileges that his brown and black friends do not. That he will have to be cognizant of that. That he needs to be aware of those moments. And that conversation aināt shit compared to the ones my brown and black friends have to have with their kids.
It scares me that itās good people who suffer. Whenever a segment of people are targeted. Itās the good ones who get hurt. There are far more good people in this world than bad. Everyone needs to remember that.
So please, reevaluate you opinion of #BlackLivesMatter. Because your opinion matters.
All my love, Danny

āA system cannot fail those it was never meant to protect.ā
ā W.E.B. Du Bois (via misandry-mermaid)
We have, over these years, been pushed and pulled towards an individualist dystopia in which, according to its proponents, it would be unnecessary (and unthinkable) for governments to do more than the most minimal tasks. A social and political transformation has been taking place that includes reshaping realities as well as attitudes. The new arrangements have many names: neoliberalism, austerity, privatization of government services, free-market globalization. It has led to numerous practical changes including charter schools, āthe end of welfare as we know it,ā prisons for profit, warfare using mercenaries, deregulation of banking, NAFTA, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the growth of the āprecariat.ā Even breakthrough government programs such as prescription-drug coverage and the Affordable Care Act have been designed to be carried out by corporations and built on private profit and individual responsibility.
