in 1986 , a passenger plane went down over the pacific ocean , killing the 112 people onboard . this included the pilot , co - pilot , three flight attendants , and 107 passengers . among the passengers onboard were jennifer and kevin guo , a married couple in their early 20s . the pair were returning to the united states from a visit to rural china : jennifer was a photographer for national geographic , and kevin her dutiful assistant . the two were extremely excited to return home , as they would have arrived just in time to celebrate their daughter diana’s fourth birthday .
that birthday is diana’s first formative memory . luckily , she had family to fall back on , namely her grandmother . hui ying , in her early 40s at the time of her daughter’s passing , took diana in and raised her . it felt like deja vu to her : twenty five years before , a heavily pregnant , eighteen - year - old hui ying made the hardest decision of her life & decided to leave her home country of china . desperate to flee her abusive relationship , hui ying moved to the united states . without the slightest idea of where to go or what to do , she gave into instinct : she followed those bright lights to new york city . she found a community for herself there , and it quickly became a home to her . though she had a rebellious spirit and tended to fluster those that were more traditional , the family she built for herself helped her raise jennifer into an incredibly creative , independent woman .
diana , though .... diana was different from her mother . she was such a well behaved child , hui ying almost didn’t know what to do . she loved school , and her shy demeanor kept her from getting swept up in the wrong crowd . or any crowd , really . despite her grandmother’s best efforts , diana had a rather lonely childhood . she always felt like an alien amongst humans : out of place somehow , like an imposter . the other kids could tell . she was never invited to other children’s birthday parties , was picked last in gym class . that sort of thing . the indifference was stifling : at times diana would have rather been outright bullied . she found solace in reading , desperate to be taken to some faraway world as often as she could .
in high school , she finally began to come out of her shell . she found a niche for herself in the dungeons and dragons club , and for the first time in her life , she had friends . ( hui ying , though skeptical about dungeons and dragons , was so relieved diana finally had a social life she decided to overlook it . ) she also had her first relationship with a fellow d&d player who had a background that couldn’t be more different than hers . this person taught her a lot about the real world , and helped get diana used to more social situations . she’s not outgoing by any means , but she doesn’t go out of her way to avoid people anymore , and she feels she owes it to this person . they dated for two years , before an amicable breakup when they had to leave for college .
after high school , diana knew exactly what she wanted to do : become a coroner . reading mystery novel after mystery novel for the majority of her life had given her the career idea , and she’d been pretty set on it for several years at that point . thanks to a hefty scholarship and a generous gift from her grandmother , diana was able to go to a reputable university . after completing a bachelor’s degree in criminology and forensic science , she attended medical school . during this time , she continued to live with her grandmother , caring for her and keeping her company as she grew older . as the two aged , priorities became a little different . hui ying had never worried about diana’s future , knowing it was bright due to her academics & determination . but something was missing . di hadn’t dated anyone seriously enough to introduce them to her grandmother since that first high school relationship . in classic grandmother fashion , she made it clear that she wanted to see a wedding before she got too old .
diana was in her late 20s working at her first ever job when hui ying fell ill . they were told she only had a year to live , if that -- and suddenly , di felt the pressure . after everything her grandmother had done for her , she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she didn’t give her the only thing she’s ever asked for . so she began her search . it wasn’t fate , really , that dropped her future spouse into her lap . it took work . they were a friend of a friend with a reputation that preceded them by a mile , so the news of their falling out with their family was common knowledge in their circles . she would have felt kind of bad for them , but it was hard to when it presented such a good opportunity for her ! it was surprisingly easy to get invited as a plus one to an event they were attending . from there , it was all smooth sailing . she had anticipated from the start that they would view her as a trophy to be won moreso than a woman to be romanced , so she was truly taken off guard when they were so .... sweet . she hadn’t prepared herself to actually be charmed by them , but the pair quickly became smitten with each other .
they didn’t date for very long before getting married . it was a beautiful , ornate event , and diana had never seen hui ying look so happy . it was everything her grandmother had wanted , and everything di didn’t know she wanted . things with her spouse were great at first . they both worked more than they should , the spouse moreso than di , but that wasn’t really a problem . she enjoyed her alone time , anyway . things only really started to fracture a few years into their marriage , when hui ying passed away in her sleep . di had no idea how to process all this grief , and sort of shut down emotionally towards her spouse . she poured all of these feelings out into writing , and that became the jumping off point for her first ever novel . it was an instant hit with the mystery fans , and diana suddenly found herself in high demand ---- from everyone but her spouse . she had always admired their drive and ambition , but that only goes so far when you can practically go days without speaking with your partner .
whether it was the reality of the situation or not , she felt that same cold indifference from her childhood but now in her marital home . what was she supposed to do ? without her grandmother to lean on , diana was truly alone in the world for the first time . she’s not proud of it , but she did what she could to feel less alone . as it turns out , the easiest way to do that is by being with someone . diana had two major affairs over the years of her marriage . her breaking point came on the night of her 35th birthday party , when her partner ended up not coming to her party at the last minute . resigning to their neglectfulness , diana simply accepted the fact that her marriage was over and stopped trying to hide her affair completely . it still took her partner a significant amount of time to notice anything was wrong , and by that time it was too late .
it was a very messy breakup . both of them said things they regretted . ultimately , they divorced , and life went back to normal . diana continued to work as a coroner , consistently doing amazing work . she turned down several promotions over the years , content with where she was at , but a little less than a year ago she began to feel restless . she was once again offered a promotion to become a federal coroner , but to accept it she would have to move to maine . for once , she accepted the change , and eight months ago she moved to moorbrooke .
