Industrial Robots Threat to Replace Human Jobs
With the looming possibility of artificial intelligence, it would not be surprising if robots that are capable of doing everything will soon replace humans. Experts warn this could threaten tens of millions of jobs in the coming three decades.
βWe are approaching a time when machines will be able to outperform humans at almost any task,β director of Rice Universityβs Institute for Information Technology in Texas Moshe Vardi said. βI believe that society needs to confront this question before it is upon us: If machines are capable of doing almost any work humans can do, what will humans do?β
Vardi added that in the near future, although there will be still some help needed from humans, robots will drastically dominate the workforce, men and women of whatever profession or rank equally affected.
Given this impending scenario, Vardi questioned: βCan the global economy adapt to greater than 50 percent unemployment?β
Over the past four decades, it is undeniable that automation and robotization in the industrial sector have brought about huge transformations. This resulted to increase in production output but, at the same time, chop down of job rates.

He added that the manufacturing industry in the United States reached the peak of its job creation in the 1980s, but since then, there has been a succeeding decline plus stagnating income among middle class.
As of now, there are over 200,000 industrial robots in the United States and the number continues to increase. Research today concentrates on incorporating machinesβ reasoning capabilities, and the development, by far, is overwhelming.
By his estimation, he anticipates that because of the rise of driverless cars, 10 percent of driving-related jobs will be slashed off in the next 25 years. Cornell Universityβs professor of computer science Bart Selman revealed that semi-autonomous or autonomous cars will begin domineering in the coming 2 or 3 years time.
Vardi is attempting to organize a global conservation on the possible effects of artificial intelligence on humans. βWe cannot blindly pursue the goal of machine intelligence without pondering its consequences.β It can be recalled that even Stephen Hawking himself shared the same concern about artificial intelligence and its possible dangers.
However, not everyone totally agrees with this notion, claiming that technology development is only a part of βfuturisticβ discussions. But since the Industrial Revolution, it has not actually address the problem of unemployment crisis. While some claim the artificial revolution is different and the change is not going to happen overnight, society must take the time to essentially adapt to having robots in the workforce and create new jobs to replace those that are lost, according to IFL Science.
