My Adventures with Superman S3E02 "Mobile Suit Toyman" Review
Okay, a week behind, but here we go.
The Plot: While Metropolis holds its own Super Convention, Jimmy makes understandable but still poor decisions, Kara has an identity crisis, Lois harasses a shopkeeper, and Clark gets into an argument with a Russian woman.
Another fun episode, setting up several plot threads for the ongoing season regarding Jimmy and Kara's relationship, the debut of Cyborg Superman and such like, while also acting as a soft introduction to Jessica Cruz ahead of her My Adventures With Green Lantern spin-off.
For an episode based in a superhero convention in a version of the DCU, I was honestly kind of expecting more actual references to more wider DC characters, but considering they were already juggling plotlines with varying level of seriousness I can forgive that not going the Young Justice route and overloading the background with easter eggs.
But yeah, a lot of fun! Kinda also implies that Kara's bi/pan too, so that's nice.
References and Easter Eggs
As previously stated, there weren't a huge amount of Easter Eggs this time, but here were some of them I could find.
Jimmy's comics about himself being Superman's friend are, naturally, a reference to the Silver Age comic with the same name. Likewise Lois being Clark's somewhat villainous love interest is also a product of the same era, while also on a meta level Silver Age Lois being set on nailing down Superman as a husband stands in contrast to MAWS!Lois' thing of being worried about the future as the idea of marriage and kids seems overwhelming to her at present.
Kind of spoiled in the preview this, but some form of the Teen Titans appear to exist within the Adventureverse. Whether as an actual team (future Cyborg Victor Stone's reference in the John Henry Irons episodes some form must exist) or as an in-universe show isn't confirmed, however. Come to think of it, them having Deathstroke as an established presence in this world unconnected from the Titans is also kind of funny.
Speaking of DC teams existing as show within this setting, Kara finds Not!Gillian Anderson and Not!David Duchovny, stars of the show's X-Files inspired Challengers of the Unknown.
While the Whip is an existing character within DC (there are in fact several, ranging from Zorro-inspired Wild West heroes to Talia al Ghul-affiliated Assassins), this version's Russian accent and how their whips work seem more inspired by Mickey Rourke's Whiplash from Iron Man 2 than a straight adaptation of the ones from the comics.
Oh hey, Livewire and Heatwave are at the convention in a non-villainous capacity too!
First introduction to future Green Lantern Jessica Cruz, voiced by former Moana actress Auliʻi Cravalho. Interestingly, according to the information released about her show at the Annecy animation festival last week, Jess lives in Los Angeles, so seemingly she flew all the way to the West Coast to see Kara... Awww!
Toyman Winslow Schott appears, complete with mech! Kind of curious if they came up with the epsiode name first (a reference to Mobile Suit Gundam) or if they wanted to put a mech in the show and came up with the title afterwards?
And finally, the official debut of Cyborg Superman. Lois being shocked by his appearance as a Lex-backed stooge may be a reference to how in his introduction at the beginning of season two, it was mentioned he was friends with Lois in college. Likewise, Lex emphasising how Hank was an AMERICAN superhero over the alien ones they have in Clark and Kara carries over from his rhetoric from the previous season... while also reflecting the politics of several IRL billionaires in Lex's position.
