Life for the Alvarez family was glamorous and filled with wonder. They were a well off family whoâd wanted for nothing. That was until they were forced to flee their beloved homeland. It was a painful moment (being ripped from the land that had given them so much) that was made even more painful the moment that they realized that they would probably never again see Cuba in their lifetime. With heavy hearts, the Alvarez patriarchs packed up what little they could carry and secreted their family to the United States.
The family â Rafael, Beatriz, and their two children, Diego and Eva, settled in Maywood, Maine. It was a far cry from the life that theyâd known before. Rafael and Beatriz found work in a local hotel: Rafael as a chef and Beatriz as a cleaner. They hoped to instill a work ethic in their children that would help them to thrive in this new place that theyâd called home.
As Diego grew, it became apparent that he would do well in life. He was a smart child, the kind of person with a quick and ready smile; people seemed to like him. Never did he want for friends. When it was time for college, Diego left Maywood for the sunny state of California. He was determined to never return to the small city where heâd spent the majority of his life. Maywood had become equated with separation, with forced migration â a place that he himself hadnât chosen, but that had been forced upon him; a place that would always remind him of the absence of home. For some years, new beginnings was the theme of his life. California seemed to be all Diego had been looking for throughout life. Within three years, Diego had completed his degree, fallen in love, and gotten married.
Three years into the marriage, though, things fell apart. Diegoâs wife had fallen for someone else. Try as they may, nothing could fix the rift between them â not therapy, not a reminder of all theyâd had. Before he knew what was happening, Diego was signing divorce papers and attempting to piece his life back together.
As a result, Diego threw himself into his work. A few lucrative stock investments later, and heâd amassed a small fortune. Money opened doors that had never been opened before. It introduced Diego to an entirely new world. It was at this point that Diego made the decision to move back to Maywood. Heâd never planned it, but the disappointments of his twenties had forced him to reexamine the circumstances of his early childhood. Upon returning to Maywood, Diego did the only thing he could think of â he purchased the Primrose Hotel, in an attempt to honor his parents and their sacrifices.
