If you’ve seen the Body Actions and Conversation and Discussion posts, you might’ve noticed a pattern: the same verb suffixes being used again and again. We’ll take a look at these today.

~아/어 내다

Expresses results achieved after overcoming difficulties. Has a feeling of having “finally” completed a task.

프랑스 축구팀이 시합을 이겨냈다. The French football team won the match (implying that it was difficult and that they had to go through great ordeals).

내일 볼 시험을 잘 붙이라고 4월부터 공부해냈다. I’ve been studying well since April in order to do well on the exam I will take tomorrow (and it was really hard).

~아/어 버리다

Also expresses completion, but doesn’t convey the feeling of “overcoming” anything. It is added to verbs that have been fully, thorougly completed. This completion can be followed by a feeling of regret, relief, anger or suprise.

헤어졌으니까 내가 찍던 우리 사진들을 태우버리려고 했다. Since we broke up, I intend to burn the pictures I took of us (implied: and finally let go, and finally get rid of them).

그는 가버렸다. He left (and never came back).

~아/어 지다

This one implies a change of state, thus conveying the passive form. This means that the action in question happened, but the subject who realized the action is either not mentioned or does not exist.

건물이 무너졌다. The bulding collapsed (on its own, or at least the person who did it is not mentioned - this is important to make the distinction with 뜨리다).

거품이 올라가다가 갑자기 터졌다. The bubble was going up and suddenly burst.

~아/어 뜨리다(트리다)

This suffix is added to mean that someone caused something to happen to something else. Both 뜨리다 and 트리다 can be used interchangeably, but 뜨리다 is much more common.

공사장 인부가 건물을 무너뜨렸다. The construction workers collapsed the building (it didn’t fall on its own).

아이가 갑자기 올라가던 거품을 터뜨렸다. The child suddenly popped the bubble that was going up.

~아/어 대다

This suffix expresses habit, or continuity. Can be translated by “He keeps…” or “She has the habit of…”. Note that this is only used in negative situations, and in casual conversation (not formal!).

당신이 이렇게 계속해서 귀찮게 잔소리를 해대면, 난 여기서 이사갈 거야. If you don’t stop this constant nit-picking, I’m going to move out.

그는 먹는 것을 거부하고 있었고 약을 끊임없이 먹어대고 있었다. He was refusing to eat and was popping pills constantly.

~아/어 거리다

Like ~아/어 대다, this suffix expresses continuity or repeated actions.

그의 망토가 바람속에서 흔들거리고 있었어! His cape was flapping in the wind! 

내 눈이 깜박거리며 떠지자, 나는 내가 겪었던 악몽을 기억하려고 애썼다.  As my eyes flickered open, I struggled to remember the nightmare I’d been through.

~아/어 시키다

This one simply means “to make somebody do/become something.”

하지만 그의 수더분한 매력이 모두를 확신시키지는 않았다. But his easygoing charm hasn’t convinced everyone (read: hasn’t made them convinced).

Also good ones:

ざけんなよ。 zakenna yo. You gotta be fucking kidding me.

そんなばかな！ sonna baka na! That’s ridiculous!

出てけ。 deteke. Leave.

Okay so I’m not a langblr and I never plan to be. However. What I do know from following a ton of them is that no one talks about Minato.

Now you may be thinking, ‘What’s Minato?’. It’s a website that was recommended to me by a Japanese Studies university professor for learning Japanse at home.

It’s literally the best resource out there and it’s free (funded by the Japanese government). You can choose between self-study and tutor support-led courses.

There are courses in Hiragana, Katakana, and the general language (from levels A1 to A2), and you can download a certificate and study record after completion of a course.

grammar

yes and no are different from english’s yes and no. you say 네 if you agree, eg. in english if you were asked don’t you like coffee you would say no, i don’t coffee, but in korean bc the statement i true you would say 네, 커피 안 좋아요

how to use 있다 and 없다. 물 있어요 (there is water) and 물 없어요 (there isn’t water)

by raising tone at end you can make it a question, 물 있어요?

present tense, 아/어/여 + 요. if the verb stem’s last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ it is followed by 아요, 가다 (to go) -> 가요 (i go). if the last vowel is not ㅏor ㅗ it is followed by 어요, 먹다 (to eat) -> 먹어요 (i eat). the stem 하 is followed by 여요 which becomes 해요 (i do).

note 가요 can mean i go, you go, he eats etc.

here is also a chart i found that helped me so much! is shows how to pronounce a word depending on the bottom letter and the next letter (# means nothing; basically how to pronounce when it’s the last letter). eg. 공룡 is pronounced 공뇽 (dinosaur).

Disclaimer: French people complain a lot. A lot. Don’t be surprised if 90% of these expressions are complaining.

Non mais oh - say this if someone does something mildly annoying and you want to express your shock and distaste.

Tu me fais chier - (alt. tu me fais chier, là.) literally ‘you make me shit’. means you’re pissing me off.

Carrément - translates to ‘squarely’. Means ‘literally’. If someone tells you something surprising or annoying, you can answer simply “ah carrément.” see: tu me fais carrément chier.

J’hallucine / je rêve - are you annoyed by something? say these.

C’est pas possible - a classic. anything bad happens - c’est pas possible. There is no cheese left? It’s not possible. I’m hallucinating. This is a burden on me that solely I can bear I cannot believe this is happening.

Ça commence à me gaver - I’m starting to get real sick of this. see: Ça commence carrément a me gaver là, putain.

T’es relou - verlan slang for ‘lourd’ meaning someone’s heavy, personality-wise. They’re tedious.

Ça me saoûle / ça me gonfle - similar to gaver, means something’s pissing you off, you’re sick of it.

Grave - totally.

C’est clair - totally/that’s clear. Like ‘claro’ in spanish. “Justine elle est trop relou” “C’est clair. Elle me fait chier.”

Perso, euh, - “Personally,” generally used at the start of a complaining sentence, to express how personal the matter is to you. Perso, euh, c’est bon là. J’en ai ras le cul.

Rôh là - general expression of distaste. Le longer the rôh, the more annoyed you are. Rôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôôh, c’est quoi ce bordel.

C’est quoi ce bordel ? - translates to “what’s this brothel”, means “what’s this shit?!”

C’est de la merde - It’s shit.

C’est une blague ? - Is this a joke?

Idem - ditto

J’ai la dal - I’m hungry

Ça caille - It’s freezing

Ouf - two meanings 1. phew or 2. verlan for “fou”, meaning crazy (as a noun or adjective). “Kévin, c’est un ouf! Il fait du vélo sans casque!” “Ouais carrément, c’était un truc de ouf!”

Kévin - there’s a running joke that all the young delinquents seem to be called Kévin.

Crever - slang for “to die”. Va crever, connard!

Connard/Connasse - c*nt, but a lot less vulgar in french peoples eyes

***heyyyyy, babycakes!!! what`s popping? wassup? how have you been? i hope you’ve been well and good and that everything is all g with you. today i have written up a post of like some little tips i have for some more,,, advanced(?) or ”farther along” Korean learners. maybe even for a bit more intermediate Korean beginners??? IDK how to explain it. maybe this is a post for everybody who knows? anyways, what I mean is that these are some things I noticed about reading hangeul and little things to keep in mind while reading hangeul. I hope this helps a couple of people and that it makes sense. so if you’re interested in know some tips I have regarding reading hangeul, keep reading~~~****

…After you have started learning Korean for a while, try not to rely on romanization. Romanization will always be a clutch preventing you from actually learning how to read the language, is the ENGLISH version of Korean words, aren’t always accurate and or provided, my dude. Use them to learn but you gotta learn how to read the letters on their own, my g. it helps in the long run. but they are good for when you have absolutely no idea how to pronounce a word and help a lot in the beginning but for my OG learners or ones who have been using them for a while, ditch the romanization and try reading it alone. Korean is tough but you are tougher~~~

Whenever people tell you the lie that “one letter has one sound” don’t believe them. do not! It’s not true. Korean isn’t as simple as that (unfortunately ) but there are ways to move around it. with general diligence, observation and time, you will be able to read and speak Korean like a pro. I believe in you~

외,왜,웨 all sound the same. Except for tiny tiny differences in pronunciation, they sound the same. at least in the beginning lol

애 and 에 sound the same too, except for a tiny, tiny difference that only natives and long-time Korean learners. Or for my special cupcakes out there who hear it the first time they do, y'all are OGs.

의 sounds like 예 or 에 or even 이 rather than the way it’s romanized whenever it’s being said out loud. Ex: 너의 sounds like 너에 in real life convos but like 너예 in some songs whenever it’s drawn out. Take your pick lol.

In Korean names, it sounds like 이. Ex: 태희 sounds more like 태히 with the 이 more drawn out.

A lot of the time, ㅎ is lowkey silent. Like whenever it’s at the beginning of a word, you do pronounce it properly like in 흘리다 and 형 but whenever it’s in the middle of a word or the end, you barely say it but it’s there. It’s just really really weak. Ex: 태형 sounds like 태영 and 시험 sounds like 시엄 but not as on the nail. It’s very subtle and weak.

I just realized this now, but looking back,,, other than when you pronounce really aspirated letters like ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅊ and ㅍ,,, Korean isn’t that much of a breathy language. you don’t put very much air into the words and don’t even pronounce  ㅎ  whenever it’s in a word…. weird but cool lol. 

Whenever ㅎ is the final of a word, it makes the next one it’s more aspirated counterpart and lowkey peaces out. Next, to ㅎ, ㄱ becomes ㅋ. Like in 이렇게 it sounds like 이러케. Words like 이렇게 and 그렇게 are super rare so don’t worry about it too much. It just helps whenever you encounter words like this.

Just as a reminder, ㅇ at the beginning of a syllable is silent and as a “final” it sounds like “ng” in any “ing” verb. When you see stuff like 잉 only the 이 is pronounced and in 잉 the ㅇ at the start is silent and the ㅇ at the bottom is an ng.

I call it the “slide/transfer”. Whenever there is a final in a Korean word that is next to a vowel that has ㅇ Ex: 이, 아 etc you kind of pronounce it with the vowel. Ex: 믿어 sounds like 미더 and like 일어나다 sounds like 이러나다, get it? Just think of it as a smooth transition.

ㅅ is a really soft consonant. Like you have to pronounce it in a very soft way. Like the s is soap. ㅆ sounds like the “s” in sea. There’s a lot more tension

To pronounce ㄹ  properly you must must must must roll your tongue. It’ll help. Whenever you say it, try to make your tongue touch the roof of your tongue really lightly. It’ll go a long way

ㄴ and ㄹ are super freaking weird whenever they’re together- it becomes a double l. Take the word 신랑 rather than strongly sounding like 신 and 랑 it sounds like 실랑. And 큰 일 났다. it sounds like 큰 일랐다.  It’s because the way the mouth moves to say n and r in Korean is very very similar so whenever the two are beside each other, the tongue wouldn’t have enough time to pronounce it properly so Koreans just say ㄹㄹ rather than ㄴㄹ.

Whenever ㄹ is the final of a word and another ㄹ is beside it, it becomes a double l. Ex: 롤링 is lolling rather than rol -ring.

Double consonants at the end of the word are quite… they’re weird but they’re harmless once you know how to read them. Rule #1: in words with double consonants that are the same, just transfer/slide the last consonant to the next vowel and you’ll be all g. Ex: 밖. If it’s next to idk 에 (like it usually will be ngl) just make it 박게 or even 박께. It makes it easier on your tongue and mind lol.

Whenever there are 2 different consonants in a double consonant and it’s BY ITSELF, no grammar particle, no nothing pronounce only the SECOND consonant in the double consonant. Only.  Ex: 닭 is 닥 not dalk or 닭. Same with 삶. Pronounce it 삼 and only 삼.

K but the game changes when it comes to whenever it is next to something. Say the word with a double consonant happens to be a verb being conjugated. Say 닮다 is our word and is in present tense so it looks like 닮아요. You would pronounce it as 달마요. The last consonant in the double consonant is always the one that replaces ㅇ, okay? there are a ton of other rules so check out this thread that just talks about them in much greater detail and in a much clearer way lol.

Whenever ㅌ is at the end of a word it and the next syllable next to it is 이becomes ㅊ. Like 끝이 [kkeut-i but is pronounced 끄치]

Welcome back, learners! Today we will begin to enter the area in which I started to get lost. Yeah, it’s going to be fun! So far it has been relatively easy but alas we can’t stay in this realm forever. Well, we could but that means our ability to communicate with others in Korean would be extremely limited. And that isn’t why we are here to learn, right?

So today we will begin with basic conjugation and tenses. Since that will be a long section in general, I have wondered on how to do that and I decided to split it up a bit instead of overwhelming you with everything at once. Since I follow the lesson plan at How to Study Korean, we will begin with a certain conjugation that is not (or rarely) used in speech, instead, it is used in writing of diaries, books, magazines, news and such when not writing/speaking to a specific audience. It is often called “Diary form” or “plain form”.

Tenses with general honorifics will come later, so if you are not interested in this part just skip over and wait for a little while until I get there.

It is used as informal speech (나 instead of 저) The only parts conjugated are verbs and adjectives (including 이다) Remember: Verb stem is dictionary form and dropping the final 다

Present Tense

Add directly to verb stem

~는다 if stem ends in consonant -> to eat: 먹다 -> 먹는다

~ㄴ다 if verb stem ends in vowel -> to learn: 배우다 -> 배운다

Example:

I go home -> 나는 집에 간다.

I understand that -> 나는 그것을 이해한다.

Adjectives

If conjugating adjectives in present tense Plain Form, don’t add anything, it’s already in present tense!

My hand is big: 내 손은 크다.

That street is long: 그 길은 길다.

Past Tense

Add directly to verb stem

~았다 if the last vowel is ㅗ or ㅏ (including ㅛ or ㅑ)

~었다 if the last vowel is anything but ㅗ, ㅏ, ㅛ or ㅑ

~였다 if the last syllable is 하 -> turns to 했다

Note: This is not if the stem ENDS in the vowel but based on the last vowel in the stem! For example, 먹다 does end with ㄱ but the last vowel is ㅓ

Example:

I ate rice -> 나는 밥을 먹었다.

I closed the door -> 나는 문을 닫았다.

I studied Korean -> 나는 한국어를 공부했다.

And now we are getting a little complicated. As you see in the example of ~였다 sometimes the syllable changes in combination with certain vowels. That happens when the whole stem ends in a vowel. In those cases, 았다/었다 gets merged with the stem. That is also why 였다 with 하 turns to 했다. Here are the ways the merge happens:

아 + 아 -> 아 (가 + 았다 -> 갔다)

오 + 아 -> 와 (오 + 았다 -> 왔다)

우 + 어 -> 워 (배우 + 었다 -> 배웠다)

이 + 어 -> 여 (끼 + 었다 -> 꼈다)

어 + 어 -> 어 (나서 + 었다 -> 나섰다)

여 + 어 -> 여 (켜 + 었다 -> 켰다)

하 + 여 -> 해 (공부하 + 였다 -> 공부했다)

stems that end in ㅡ are more complicated and will be covered later when we talk about irregular verbs.

ㅑ,ㅠ,ㅔ, etc don’t have to be merged but you can Examples:

바래 -> 바랬다 or 바래었다

매 -> 맸다 or 매었다

메 -> 멨다 or 메었다

would each both be correct

Examples:

My uncle came to the store: 삼촌은 가게에 왔다.

I went to the museum: 나는 벅물관에 갔다.

Adjectives Adjectives in past tense plain form are conjugated exactly the same as verbs (including merging)

That food was delicious: 그 음식은 맜있었다.

That street was long: 그 길은 길었다.

That man was handsome: 그 남자는 잘생겼다.

Future Tense

Add directly to the verb stem

~겠다 - no difference in vowel or consonant

Examples:

I will eat: 나는 먹겠다

I will go: 나는 가겠다

Adjectives Adjectives are not used in future tense as often as they are in English, but technically they would be conjugated exactly the same as verbs.

I will be happy: 나는 행복하겠다.

I will be hungry: 나는 배고프겠다.

Conjugating of 있다

있다 can be an adjective and a verb depending on how it is used.

Adjective: Indicates that someone has something, or that someone/thing is at a location

Verb: more complicated and will be explained a whole lot later, but remember for now it can be a verb

Since we are not getting to when it is a verb yet, we are not going into how to conjugate it in those cases. As an adjective though it is conjugated as other adjectives.

NOTE: Those of you who have done tenses before will maybe notice that I used a Future tense that is different from what you know. There IS a different Future tense, but we’ll get to that later since I try to follow the How to Study Korean lesson plan, I don’t want to mix things too much. I personally found it confusing that there are two ways to form the future and that they are not taught together, but I’ll try to trust the experience of the people at HTSK, so please be patient. :)

That’s it for today! Next time we will finally get to take a look at honorifics and using tenses with them. So until then try to practice the plain form and tenses, it’ll help when we get to the next step. Maybe you find some articles online and see if you can identify if they use this plan form or not and look at some dictionary form verbs and adjectives and try to conjugate through the plain form tenses. Because it’ll just get more and more brain-twisting from here on out, we want to make sure that we understand each step! Right? Right.

I’m going to go through the average conversation I have at a cafe here in Korea. Refer to Cafe Drink Vocabulary to say more specific drinks~

BARISTA: 어서오세요/안녕하세요 | Welcome/Hello

네잔 | 4 cups (keep going like that with Native Korean numbers. After 4, you do not shorten the number)

mince- when used as an adjective it means thin, when used as an interjection in means something like ‘man’ or ‘geez’.

La vache- lit. the cow, used as an interjection kinda like fudge in english

Swear level 2: Can be said in front of mom (damn, shit)

Merde: shit, can be a noun or an interjection

Con- stupid, asshole (can be a noun or an adjective)

Chier: to shit, a verb

Un merdier: a situation that is shit, a mess, a cluster fuck

l’élection de 2016 était un merdier / the 2016 election was a mess

Bon sang: lit. ‘Good blood’. used like holy shit.

Fumier- manure, used like jerk or dick

un fumier un jour, un fumier toujours. / Once a jerk, always a jerk.

Firme ta gueule/ta gueule- Shut up, lit. close your snout.

gueule- used kinda like ‘your ass’ in american english. literally it means mouth, but its usually used for animals so it becomes insulting when applied towards humans.

Je vais casser la gueule ! / I’m gonna kick your ass!

Dégueulasse/dégueu- the vulgar form of gross

j'en ai marre- i’m sick of/fed up with it
