It's because when all the records were set the rules and other meta aspects of the sport were not yet set so in current year it'd take an absurd amount of skill + luck to overcome them.

But it's funny to see "diet of cigarettes and alcohol" hailed as the reason athletes of the past are still undefeated.

I've seen this happen in other (marginally related) fields and it's always fun to see people go "how did X did Y? It's impossible!" it's because they cheated, or they did something no longer allowed, or they cheated, or they were playing on a different ruleset. Or they cheated. It's very common, one of the (relatively) most well known players of a certain game used to cheat all the time, even before the use of ce was even put to a vote, and literally never got caught.

If you've ever seen that "why would they cheat if they are already good at the game?" type of question the answer is simply. They weren't that good.
