So I've watched Goncharov about a hundred times at this point....
Why the fuck is no one talking about the symbolism of jewelry in Katya's relationships?!?!?
Like, Katya is a woman who takes pride in her appearance which obviously becomes a reflection of her mental state, and by extension the state of her relationships with Goncharov and Sofia, throughout the film. In the beginning of the film, Katya is wearing diamonds and pearls (both of which form from adverse circumstances), which reflects her elegance and sophistication as Donna Goncharova but it's also a subtle way to show the cracks in her marriage. Goncharov uses expensive jewelry as a way of avoiding hard conversations about their issues, always finding a way to bring up how much each piece costs as a way of trying to cut off Katya's frustrations, and the snide way he jokes about it during the cocktail scene is telling of how fragile their relationship has become, especially when the film juxtaposes the elaborate diamond and pearl necklace he gives her right before the infamous carnival scene with the simple pearl earrings that she tells us were a gift from their first anniversary.
In contrast, you have the sea glass bracelet that Sofia buys for her in the marketplace. It is, in Valery's words, a "cheap trinket" but Sofia picked it out for her because it matches her eyes!!! To Sofia, the bracelet is a token of affection but to Katya it is so much more because for the first time in years, someone gave her a gift because they wanted to make her happy, not show off how much money they spend on her! And we as the audience can clearly see how much she cherishes that bracelet, the way she leaves her expensive jewelry all over her vanity, not caring even when she loses the new diamond earrings that Goncharov just bought while carefully tucking the bracelet into its own jewelry case whenever she isn't wearing it.
And the way that the film contrasts how Goncharov and Sofia give her the jewelry; Goncharov is careless when giving her the new jewelry cases, tossing them around, barely even looking at Katya when he gives her a "present" because the gifts are obligations now, much like their relationship has become for the both of them, a part they play with each other, a hollow echo of past love. While Sofia doesn't just look at her when giving her the bracelet, she fastens it on Katya's wrist herself and tells her how beautiful it looks on her. She sees Katya, the good, the bad, and the damaged, and reminds her that like sea glass, her broken parts don't have to keep hurting her, that it's okay to let time soften the sharp edges of her grief.
Idk, maybe I'm crazy but I always go crazy when a character's appearance becomes a part of the themes of a film and Katya is such a pivotal character in the film that I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this.
save a horse, ride a cowbutch
I'm the opposite of a hater. I'll watch clips from a show I've never seen and I'm immediately rooting for the characters. You tell me about an art form I've never heard of before and I'm like "holy shit look at how good this is!" I'm wishing that the customer service rep's day gets better when I see they're in a bit of a sour mood. There is so much beauty in the world but you gotta go out looking for the way the light glistens off the water and trees, not just wait for the weather to get better.
Hey. Hey. Universe is not uncaring and cruel okay? Because you are part of the universe and i am part of the universe and everyone is part of the universe. And i care. And you care. And millions of us care. And we can all choose to be kind instead of cruel. Okay? The universe cares because you care because i care because people care. The universe can be kind because you can be kind and i can be kind and we all can be kind. Okay?

To every queer and trans kid reading this: here's a reminder that you know your own heart, your identity, and your body better than anybody else. No matter what politicians say about your existence, you know yourself better than their hatred does, and you are not defined by them. You deserve to make the choices about who you are, what you want your body to look like, and who you want to be, both now, and in the future.
You are not alone, we can promise you that. Let yourself become the person you see in your wildest dreams, the smallest ways matter just as much as the big visible steps. Even if it's just by saying to yourself today: 'you know what? I am [whichever words resonate with you]!' today.
You are not, and have never been, a problem or a burden for your identity. You deserve the world, happiness, and to grow up as you, however that looks like, and not how the world wants you to be.
THE QUESTION:
THE ANSWER:
Takehiko Inoue, Vagabond // Arundhati Roy, The End of Imagination // Henry Miller, Dear Brenda: The Love Letters Of Henry Miller to Brenda Venus // Unknown Gawain poet, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (tr. Simon Armitage)
I know times are stressful right now, but please do not give in... please take care of yourself to whatever degree you are able. Check in on others when you have the energy. Do what little actions you can to make things better, big and small. I believe in you. Things will get better. Just look to history... it's not great, but we have seen improvements, things have improved they've gotten worse, and then they got better than they were before. It will get better. We can make it so it gets better.
I want this post to get as big as my hopepunk post because this needs to be internalized by you people.
When it comes to conversations on environmentalism and taking care of our planet, we are doing a disservice to progress by asserting black and white statements that humans are “inherently evil” and “all we do is take and destroy, we are so selfish,” when the reason the Paris Agreement exists is because we saw what was happening to the planet and we wanted to try and fix it. We saw what was happening with acid rain and the ozone layer, so we came together and mended our mistakes.
Immediately making conclusions that humans are a plague on the earth itself is taking accountability away from greedy corporations that are actually doing the most harm to the earth. Yes a lot of humans are very evil, and some of those humans are unfortunately running the government, but to say they represent the larger species of the human race is reinforcing the idea that 1: You people just want to place blame on a collective group of people like you always do, and 2: You sound complicit as hell in the face of evil, assuming that’s just how humans are and there’s nothing we can truly do.
That’s some fucking bullshit if I’ve ever heard it.
hope for the future is so very punk btw.
it’s completely natural to feel angry n sad n disgusted in these times but you CANNOT give up. you can’t stop living. you have to keep loving n caring as hard as you possibly can bc it does help more than you think.

I think you can absolutely still have hope while acknowledging we are in multiple forms of collapse. You can be hopeful you’ll get a job. You can be hopeful solutions will arise. You can be hopeful you’ll make friends. You can be hopeful that there are people who care for the world amidst the world being beat and bruised.
You’re allowed to care even though lots of things are going bad. Some things can’t be fixed or saved. But it’s okay to hold onto hope for something good to happen tomorrow. Good things are always going to pop up like flowers in war zones.
“The world is not on fire, there are just lots of fires.” Don’t lose hope that some fires can be put out. So much is still easy. Build a safe zone within the flames, and persist putting them out. Accepting we are in a bad place does not equal rolling over to let it get worse. No matter how bad things will get, you can still put out flames in different spaces.
You can give yourself the freedom of acknowledging life right now is in a state of unrest and we don’t know when the chapter will close, while also being happy we are here with other people and things that make it worth it. Because it is worth it. All hard things are worth it.
Allow yourself gentle mercies that will keep you alive.
It would be nice if you cared about other people. But I actually don't care whether or not you find it in your heart of hearts to care about others.
I care about you understanding that your survival is inextricably tied to others.
And if you want to live in a world with clean water and breathable air and knowledgeable doctors and mechanics and farmers etc.
Then you absolutely have to care about the conditions others are subjected to, because it will all become your problem in time.
If you're not capable of compassion, that's really sad for you, but if you're realistic about what's best for you, then you'll understand that what happens to others dictates your life too.
If you can't do it for others, then do it for you.
This Juneteenth, I want this to be a reminder for y'all to stop saying "POC" when you mean black. It's fine to discuss things about general people of color's oppression and struggle but sometimes it's ok to talk about just black people. It's tempting to try and generalize so that people will actually care about us, because when you specifically talk about just the black, unique struggle it is very easy to be silenced and erased, but please, for the love of all that's holy, if you mean black, say black.
(side note; it's also okay to specify regions as well. Don't say African diaspora when you mean American black people. Because Juneteenth isn't about Africa, it's about the previously enslaved black people of the US. It's okay to talk about our struggle, our specific struggle. We shouldn't need to be palatable or relatable to be listened to.)
Pro tip: you can like stuff that's problematique if you can articulate an awareness of what it may imply instead of denying there's anything wrong with it at all

it's ironic that ableds love using disabled people for inspiration porn but hate actually giving the vast majority of disabled people the tools and accommodation to facilitate disabled people doing more with their time. it's almost like the point of it isn't to inspire but to create a false narrative that disability can be overcome with strength of will because look at these people who did it! now stop asking for help
