āsheāll either claim she forgot promising the box or any knowledge of my intentions to come tonight,ā laurence hummed in greeting. perhaps tonight he wouldnāt fault her terriblyāshe had chosen quite interesting company for laurence tonight. he made no attempt to hide his appreciative glance; most would agree upon sophie de rohanās beauty, but even moreso, laurence found himself fascinated by her reputation.Ā
in lady sophie, he saw many of his beliefs mirrored: most of all, an utter disregard of the tonās expectations.Ā āi worry you will get me in trouble, lady de rohan. it seems to follow you everywhere,ā laurence teased with a grin. he leaned forward in response to her question, glancing down at the stage as if it would give him any inkling about the actors.Ā āi know a few. rambunctious gamblers. donāt know much about their acting, though.āĀ
ātrouble?ā she repeated, a laugh in her voice.Ā ātell me my lord, when have i ever caused you any?ā there was a twinkle in her eye as she turned in her seat to look the earl in his face. she knew others spoke of her; she had read of herself in the gossip columns spread around town- gossip seemed a commodity as much as coin amongst the ton.
āgambling is always fun,ā she said.Ā āthough i suppose thatās to be expected amongst actors. alongside indulging too much in cheap drink.ā she hadnāt spent much time around actors, but had heard stories of actresses making most of their money on the arms of married men.
gildcdyouthā:
āWell, would you like there to be?ā He offered, a raised brow in the direction of the man as he discreetly pulled out the edge of a flask from the inner pocket of his jacket.Ā While awaiting the manās answer he carefully poured a respectable amount into the glass he had been handed only moments prior.
āi-ā shock crosses his face at the manās behaviour.Ā āno, thank you, sir.ā the earl gave a light shake of his head.Ā āi am afraid vodka and i are not the greatest friends- from what little of it i have tried.ā he didnāt think he had tried it since his school days, and it wasnāt too common to come across.
where: theatre who: anyone !!
because laurence and his family lived much of the year in their countryside estate, he rarely had the opportunity to go to the theatre. this year, laurence rented a box for the entire season. his mother hoped it meant more time spent amongst his peers, hoped it would lead to both of her children in happy matches by the end of the season. laurence chuckled a little as he climbed the stairs at the thought. quite the magic trick that would be. of course, just because he had rented a box did not mean laurence would have his solitude. more often than not, time at the theatre was spent going from box to box, socializing with acquaintances like any other occasion during the season. sometimes, one would lend out or share a rented space with good friends interested in seeing a show or two whenever one was not attending a show.Ā
sometimes, his mother offered seats in their family boxāwithout telling him before, apparently. at least, that was what he happened upon that night. meddling mammas ⦠laurence offered a polite smile to the person heād be sharing the night with.Ā āi apologize. my mother failed to inform me of your presence tonight.ā he sat in one of the velvet lined seats and ran a hand down his face.Ā āi wouldnāt be surprised if sheās done this intentionally.ā
āand here she told me it would be your sister attending tonight.ā sophie strolled into the box, taking in the sight of the earl alone; letting out a small laugh and shake of her head at the sight.Ā āif she is anything like my maman, if you were to question her about it later she will probably deny it all.ā despite the apparent mishap, she took a seat, setting down her small reticule with her gloved hand.Ā
she knew how meddlesome mothers could be; but few menās mothers would try to arrange such an accidental meeting with her, and she had come all this way and wouldnāt conteplate leaving even if she had been unwelcome..Ā ātell me, what do you know of the actors? we shall need something to gossip about if the play proves terrible.:
Marianne & James ||Ā Seymourās London Home || @diadcmsā
Whilst she was more than content and settled into her new life, there would always be a part of her that missed living under the same roof as her siblings. The time spent apart from them only confirmed and increased her love for them all and she was reminded of how lucky she had been to not only have been surrounded by them but that they were tied to her forever. All the Howards had an open invitation to visit her both at Ragley Hall and their London address. The season tended to make seeing one another all the easier, even if responsibilities pulled them apart at public gatherings, so she was pleased when Jamesā name was announced. Bright smile lit up her features as she welcomed him, crossing the room to greet him.Ā āI am so glad you could find the time to come.āĀ
The tea was ordered but once it arrived the staff were dismissed, after all she was more than capable of pouring the drinks for the both of them. āIf I did not know you better I should accuse you of hiding from me the other night.āĀ Words were given purely in jest when she knew that the both of them had more than likely been in high demand. Duty tended to require that they place politeness over their own desires and for the most part she had always borne it with grace.Ā āAs it is Iām quite certain you been otherwise engaged. Anything - or perhaps anyone - of interest?ā Brow raised slightly as she posed her question, lips pressing together to stifle the smile that always came with teasing between siblings.
he always found it a little odd to visit the siblings of his that now had their own homes; to have grown up under the same roof, and now be spread out across the city in the winter and the country in the summer- it was strange.Ā
coming into his sisterās home, james had a great smile upon his face.Ā āmarianne, i can always find time for you,ā he said. it was true, or at least he hoped so; james howard would always try to find time for his family, ever if he were buried in a mountain of papers to be read, letters to be sent, and sums to be added.
āi was not hiding.ā had they been younger his tone might have been defensive, but as it was it was matter of fact.Ā āi did speak to your husband; is nicholas in today?ā he asked; knowing his answer to her question probably wasnāt what she was hoping for.Ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā isabel laughed, trying to keep her volume at an appropriately polite level. her mother was always reminding her not to be too loud, though surely it was a compliment that she found his words so amusing?Ā ā i understand perfectly,Ā ā she agreed.Ā ā it is so difficult to choose one or the other. i imagine summer might be quite lovely in the country, and yet i could not bear to miss the season. it is far too entertaining.Ā ā she may hate the marriage-market, but isabel had always enjoyed all other aspects of london, and that made it all worth it.
āi donāt believe i have missed a season since i was in school,ā he admitted. between coming into the earldom at twenty and his duties in the house of lords, and it sometimes felt he had a sibling joining society every season; though thankfully the last would the next year.Ā āi donāt think a year would feel complete without it.ā
Saliha & Sophie || Argyll Ball || @diadcmsā
Having been bound by duty or honour or some such moral thing to grace such gatherings with her presence for years, she was all too aware of their rules and the requirements that she was supposed to meet. One would think that that might encourage her to abide by them but instead it simply gave her the insight into how to bend them without causing too much of a stir. Whilst she very much disliked being told what to do or having expectations of herself, her loyalty was still to her father and her country. So a balance was always struck, finding a way to dance around what would be considered inappropriate ( most of it needlessly or foolishly so in her opinion ) without ever doing enough to be known as a woman of disrepute. After spending the majority of her evening dancing she had grown bored of the partners available to her when it felt as though she had danced with the vast majority of them endless times before. A new diversion was sought and her attention turned to the card room, an uncommon choice but hardly scandal-worthy.
She had scarcely claimed her own seat when her gaze landed on someone she hoped she might rope into her little game. Smile danced over her lips, flickering with a mischief she tried to down play as her brow rose to pose a question at the familiar blonde. āShall I deal you in?āĀ
sophie had spent muchĀ of the evening on the dance floor, and was grateful for a chance to rest her feet. as much as the blonde loved dancing, sometimes even she required a break; and after dancing the allemande, waltz, and promenade with various partners, she had made her way to the card room.
at the other womanās words, sophie let out a grin, taking a seat at the table.Ā āwhat game shall we play?ā she questioned, setting a reticule down on the table in front of her.Ā āyes, deal me,ā she added, without waiting for a response.Ā

āOh thank heavens, yes, thank you so very much,ā Nicholas breathed out gratefully towards his brother-in-law as he finally found the refreshments table. The Marquess then swiftly downed the entire glass before sighing softly in relief.Ā āPlease pardon my manners, James, but I was just dead-parched and I couldnāt find an opportunity to escape for a reprieve till now,ā he admitted with a bashful chuckle.Ā
there was a split moment where james stared at the marquess, a blink in shock at how fast he finished the drink.Ā āof course,ā he said, nodding his head as he put on a smile.Ā ādid marianne accompany you tonight?ā he asked, glancing around the room in hopes of catching a glimpse of his younger sister.

Clad in a pale blue muslin dress of fine fit, Lady Diana had finally made her escape from the dance floor. Dancing left a flush of excitement in her cheeks, as did the attention she had received from a few gentlemen she hoped might come calling later in the week. It was not a bad first outing, to be sure. Her family would be pleased. āIām afraid I had to take a break,ā she laughed lightly,Ā āEven a ballroom as fine as this can start to feel unbearably warm after a few turns.ā
āHow have you been?ā Sophie was one she knew well, thanks to their shared interest in novels, and she offered her a true smile as she smoothed gloved hands down the front of her dress.Ā āIām looking forward to our next meeting. Iāve found the most marvelous book, written by a Mr.Ā Samuel Richardson. Have you read him?āĀ
āif you are so warm, let us go out onto the terrace.ā she took the other womanās arm, leading her out towards the terrace.Ā āwe might even find something to drink. i know i am positively parched after so much dancing.ā the room was warm, and sophie had spent much of the evening on the dancefloor as well; and so many bodies, all moving at once, was bound to make any room warm.
āsamuel richardson?ā she repeated, thinking the name over in her head, comparing it to the arsenel of books she had read.Ā āis he the one who wrote clarissa?ā she asked.Ā āwhichever it is, you must bring it along. are you free next thursday?ā

Brandon spotted the Earl of Suffolk serving drinks at the evenings events. He found himself wandering over towards the table and offered one of the lemonades.Ā āHave things become so terrible in Parliament that youāre forced to serve drinks now?ā There was a teasing chasetisement in his tone as he asked the question. HIs own family having political ties and having worked with the Suffolks within the House of Lords.Ā
āah yes, the first career i would begin would be as lemonade hander.ā his own tone was less drole than that of his sisterās brother-in-law. james tended to attend balls mostly out of duty- and encouragement from his mother.Ā āiām not quite sure it would be as fulfilling as the jobs i am used to.ā
devcnshireā:
In the past dancing had not been something that he had shied from when it had been impressed upon him from a young age how it was the polite and proper thing to dance with as many ladies as possible. Even once married he had still felt somewhat duty-bound to give young ladies their turn, a chance to show themselves at their best to potential suitors. Back then he had been able to enjoy the luxury of no expectations on him, able to go back to his wife without having to do anything more. But now he was back among the ranks of suitor and he found himself hesitating to claim a place on the dancefloor, all too aware that at times it was almost impossible for a dance to simply be a dance.Ā āIt has been some time since I was the asked rather than the asker.āĀ Easy smile touches his lips at his confession, an honest one but heās quick to move the conversation on before it lingers too long in sombre waters. āI trust you have not been so neglected? I should be quick to rectify it if that has been the case.āĀ
she had already had several spins around the dance floor, with as many different partners as there were dances; sophie had been a fan of dancing even before her debut in society all those years ago.Ā āyou havenāt seemed to have asked someone yet tonight,ā the blonde said, her eyebrow arching as if she had asked a question. she knew the duke had been absent from ton events for a while, and she had always found it best to jump into things head first rather than dip her toes in it; and sophie thought she might help the gentleman do the same.Ā ācome along, one dance and then i shall show you where all the men have hidden away so they can smoke, talk politics, and gamble away their family fortunes.ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā isabel accepted the drink with a polite smile. heaven forbid she ever forget her manners, after all.Ā ā thank you, my lord. i have been - that is yes, we spent our summer at Althorp,Ā ā she replied, trying not to stumble over her words.Ā ā it is lovely to be in the city again. of course, there is nothing quite like all of this -Ā ā she guestured to the room around them, in all its opulence -Ā ā in northamptonshire.Ā ā there was certainly far less opportunity to have such a wonderful party in the country. the season did have its moments, she could not deny that.
āi must agree with that.ā he took a look around the room, before settling his eyes on isabelās face again.Ā āi believe i always find myself missing the city when i am in the country, but then missing the country once i have returned to london.ā the earl let out s small chuckle.Ā āboth emtirely condradicting each other, but both home nonetheless.ā

Perhaps he shouldnāt have come.Ā It was clear he was in a sour mood, and polite parties such as these always seemed to sour it further.Ā There was nothing wrong with them, he just preferred his music a bit louder, and the drinks stronger than the one being offered to him.Ā Ā āDoes it have vodka in it?ā he questioned back.
james chuchkled at the manās words, glancing down at his own drink.Ā āi donāt believe so,ā he said. lord suffolk had never been too fond of the clear spirit- and thankfully, for him at least (and not so much for the man opposite) most englishmen tended to keep rum or brandy in stock rather than vodka.
