Nothing can really prepare you for you the sheer overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother. It is full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry, all mixed together. Your fundamental identity changes overnight. You go from thinking of yourself as primarily an individual, to suddenly being a mother, first and foremost.

Who have lost their mothers

Who never had mothers

Who are estranged from their mothers

To all the Mothers

Who have lost their children

Who aren't respected as mothers by their family or community

Who get misgendered today

To all the Birthing Fathers & Non Binary Parents

Who have a complicated relationship with the concept of "motherhood"

And to everybody else that is greeted by sorrow, not celebration, today.

I see you. I love you. Grief is hell, and our society makes no space for our suffering today.

but every once in a while, i think about how nice it would be to make two cups of coffee. i think about going to our local community theatre production just to support anybody on stage. i think about how i want to pack a cooler with little sandwiches cut into triangles and go on a day trip to somewhere new. to explore with somebody. to share that moment where something-is-new.
