Black Lives Matter
Everyone started from nothing
Everything once was so sane
Itâs odd how some see a blessing
In playing the racism game
From where comes the desire
The Passion, the motive, the strength
From where comes your fire
To believe in inequality and hate
Why do they place this oppression
I just donât see the connection
Maybe soon theyâll climb the ladder
And realize that Black Lives Matter
American Oxygen
âChasinâ this American Dream We sweat for a nickel and a dimeâ
-Rihanna
These lyrics show that not everyoneâs hard work pays off. Everyone wants to live the american dream but may spend their whole lives making just enough to keep a roof over their head. Those who get the opportunity to fulfill their dreams are the lucky ones.
âSimilar to the coding systems employed by anthropologists, hashtags allow users to not simply âfileâ their comments but to performatively frame what these comments are âreally about,â thereby enabling users to indicate a meaning that might not be otherwise apparent.â
-Bonilla and Rosa, â#Fergusonâ
Hashtags prove that posts on twitter have a deeper meaning than the short sentence they might be. Posting a hashtag shows that deep connection, but may also refer their quote to some movement. Twitter can be a place that connects people under similar oppression, and the hashtags give them a way of fighting back in a sense.

Once again, the media focused not on state action buton the worthiness of black bodies. Local news immediatelyran proďŹles of Riceâs parents, noting that they both had âvi-olent pastsâ (his father had been charged with domestic vi-olence and his mother with drug possession). This history, reporters argued, could help explain why Tamir Rice wouldbe inclined to play with a toy gun in a public place. - #Ferguson: Digital protest, hashtag ethnography, and the racial politics of social media in the US,â Bonilla and Rosa
This quote brings out a lot of truths in modern day media. Blacks are always made out to be criminals no matter what an issue may be. Something that stands out to me on this issue is the viral posts quoted âIf they gunned me down, which photo would they use.â These posts consist of two photos, one being good, and the other bad, obviously referring that the media would use the bad one. This points out that the media always tries to portray the bad side of a person to make the story seem against blacks, which is totally unfair.
They say they were provoked although oddly 'there is no video of the incident despite the fact that the jail is equipped with video cameras'

what does it taste like: revenge squirming alive in your mouth strangling you quiet from the inside out.

'What was harder, being black enough for the black kids, or black enough for the white kids?' 'Being Neither'
Justin Simien âDear White Peopleâ
âIn our kitchen-talk, porch-talk, stoop-talk, shop-talk, we say a lot of things that most white folks rarely hear because in these spaces we can be just a little more free or, at least, we face our own judgments of each other, shaped by our racist ecology, rather than carry the unique heaviness of âbeing Black.âÂ
Faithful: #BlacklivesmatterKitchenTalk
This quote shows how comforting it might be for blacks to be able to talk to each other without dealing with the rest of the world. By being out with society they may feel oppressed in daily life just because of who they are. Saying they can get rid of the feeling by just being alone really shows a lot.
Rather, they agreed that the criminal system worked well in service of the purposes for which it had been designed: âinstitutionalized lynching.â
#BlackLivesMatter Kitchen Talk, Faithful (via marinad1)
This quote shows what some African Americans may think of the criminal system in the US. They see it in favor of whites and unfair to them. The way it is set up in their eyes is just to harm black people, rather than to protect them like it should. Saying that it was designed this way roots back to the creation of the government when blacks were not treated as equal.
Our sense is that the criminal system cannot be relied upon to administer justice for Black folks, and was, in fact, historically designed to control Blacks within a racial caste system.
