“Five B-29’s were used in the film, but only one could fly. The others were gathered from remote areas in various dismantled and decaying forms to be rejuvenated, with two sent to the Studio and two sent to Hawaii for an excruciatingly difficult rejuvenation process. The U.S. Navy had some rigging and instrumentation on hand; additional equipment was purchased from outside sources, and the rest had to be painstakingly tooled by Disney craftsmen.” -Disney A to Z

S.E. Hinton, who wrote the novel this film was based on, had doubts about Matt Dillon playing the part of a country kid. Dillon would go on to have roles in two more film adaptations of Hinton’s novels - The Outsiders (1983) and Rumblefish (1983).

Bette Davis starred in two Disney films - Return From Witch Mountain (1978) and The Watcher In The Woods (1981).
