Post-Game: Sequel-Bait Edition
(Mina carefully peeks around the corner as she enters the abandoned hideout, almost squeaking in surprise when she notices Thorne. Still a monster and still badly injured, the bat immediately hears her footsteps in the sands and turns in her direction.)
(Drawing in a swift breath to steel her nerves, Mina draws the last plasma vial she has from her pouch and slowly steps out into Thorne’s field of view. She has just enough time to notice that he’s pulled back defensively before he visibly relaxes, his eyes widening. He stares at the vial and lets out a soft grunt.)
(The Hollower approaches the former Marshal of Ossex and carefully holds the vial up to his lips, pouring the contents out and making sure he gets every last drop. Then she sits down, watching in silence as the plasma reverses Thorne’s transformation. It’s the first time in ten years she’s seen him - the real him - without his helmet.)
(His eyes were closed during the healing process. He opens them to see Mina, smiling at him with tears in her eyes.)
(Mina reaches out to him, and their hands meet in the sand.)
Mina: Shh-shh-shh…Yes, I did.
(Shortly afterward…both of them are gazing out across the sea at Tenebrous Isle. The powerless Spark Generators tower over the isle while smoke clouds continue to grow over Ossex.)
Mina: Do you remember anything?
Thorne: Not since Lionel threw me into the generator. Is this Lionel’s doing?
Mina: After he transformed you, I confronted him at Radiant Manor. I was foolish - I rushed in to expose his lies without thinking, just as he planned for. Together, you and I managed to stop him, but he managed to turn the city against me and overloaded himself with Spark. I was only barely able to shut the towers down, but now Ossex is in anarchy and we’re both fugitives.
(Thorne is speechless. Mina, who has been facing the devastation, turns to look at him.)
Mina: You saved me, Thorne, but you were badly hurt in the process. I thought you were dead.
Thorne: I saved you…as a monster?
Mina: It’s because of the plasma.
(She holds up the empty vial.)
Mina: Mr. Furgus told me it can suppress or enhance the effects of Spark…right before he used some of his own to mutate himself.
Thorne: But I don’t carry -
Mina: Before I confronted Lionel, I had to stop you rampaging through Ossex. Some of my plasma must have gotten into you when you tried to eat me.
Thorne: I tried to EAT you?!
Mina: You nearly did, too. It even made me squeak like you once said you wanted to hear. But the plasma gave you just enough of yourself back that you recognized me.
Thorne: Enough of myself that I could help you put an end to Lionel and return here when I needed to retreat.
(They continue to stare out until Thorne speaks up.)
Thorne: I can’t say I’m not also to blame for all this. I thought I could minimize the damage, or even prevent it, by keeping my sights squarely on Lionel and the generators, but I underestimated the people’s reliance on Spark and their trust in him.
Mina: We both played right into his hands.
Thorne: Indeed, but soon enough, it won’t matter. The isle will heal without him, and he will control it no longer.
(He turns his head to meet Mina’s gaze.)
Thorne: Was it me who brought you here?
Mina: No. My friend Cappy…
Mina: Cappy…He secured a boat for me, but the townspeople killed him seeing me off.
(Thorne moves to comfort her, but she suddenly throws herself at him, wrapping her arms around him in a huge hug.)
Mina: It’s because of him that I found you, but I can’t thank him for it now. And Rhene, Muriel, Drillheardt…I warned them about the mob, but they insisted I escape alone! They have a young apprentice, Thorne! They won’t…They’re not…
(She sobs into his arms. Without a word, he begins to tear up, too, and they squeeze each other tighter…)
(Even later…night has fallen. The two have built a campfire, and off in the distance, one can barely make out the Cat Choir singing.)
Thorne: Earlier, you said I saved you, but not by bringing you here. What did I do?
Mina: Heh. It’s kind of funny, actually. You won’t believe this. When Lionel overloaded himself, you panicked and, er, put me in your mouth again.
Thorne: You’re right. I refuse to believe that.
Mina: (laughing) You did! And I’m glad you did, because I would certainly never have thought of it. Besides, better your mouth than his.
Thorne: “Better your mouth than-“ He didn’t dare!
Mina: Oh, he did, but before he transformed, thank goodness. Shook me up pretty badly, but I’ve been hurt worse.
Thorne: All the bones in the world couldn’t pay you back for that.
Mina: Well, I would have settled for what he had in his body.
(To her surprise, Thorne laughs.)
Thorne: For all his talk of pomp, prosperity, and power, all Spark really did for him was make his bones bigger. How fitting that the generators were his own undoing in the end.
(The rare moment she can see him smiling doesn’t last long; he frowns as he stands up and walks over to gaze at Ossex again. Against the night sky, the sight of the destruction is even more haunting. She joins him just in time to hear him let out a deep sigh.)
Mina: Are you thinking of going back?
Thorne: I know it’d be…tremendously unwise, to put it lightly, but there is much I still have to do there.
Mina: …Let’s go back together.
Thorne: I can’t ask that of you. Not after all you’ve gone -
(Mina jumps up to Thorne’s muzzle and pulls him down toward her, forcing him face-to-face with her.)
Mina: Thorne, stop it! I told you the Hollowers’ Guild isn’t safe on Tenebrous anymore - we both have people we care about, and we won’t be able to save them alone! The only reason I left the isle was because I needed more allies.
(She lets go of Thorne’s face.)
Mina: Well, I have you now. We have each other.
Thorne: …All that’s left is to prepare, then.
Mina: Starting with getting you a new weapon. Have you ever held a Blaststrike Maul?
Mina: Ah, you’re right, we should rest up first. Preparations begin tomorrow.
(She returns to the campfire. Thorne watches her for a moment, then looks up to the sky.
Thorne: For a brighter tomorrow.
(He does a dramatic turn with his wings spread like a cape and begins to walk toward Mina and the campfire. The camera pans up toward the night sky, revealing the Astral Orrery hovering over Tenebrous Isle. Despite the Starry Generator being out of commission, the Orrery glows with power….)
