Just as youโre about to enter your apartment door, he folds you into a hugโno warning, no reasonโjust arms wrapping around you like itโs the most natural thing in the world. You sink into it for a moment before mumbling against his chest:
โSix out of ten.โ
He goes completely still. For a full second, he doesnโt even seem to breathe. โ...What?โ
โYour hug. Six out of ten.โย
โYouโre rating this.โ His voice has gone completely flat, the way it does when his brain is clearly trying to catch up. He still hasnโt let go, arms locked around you like his body never got the message that something has gone terribly wrong.
โI mean, someone has to keep you sharp.โย
โI wasnโt aware this was a performance.โ He pulls back just enough to look down at you, expression unreadable except for the faint furrow between his brows. Oh, this is a challenge, because him and six out of ten? Unacceptable.
โGripโs fine. You just let go too fast, usually.โ You shrug, biting back a smile.
โI havenโt let go yet.โ
โThatโsโokay, thatโs true, but historicallyโโย
โHistorically.โ He repeats the word like it has personally offended him. Then, without another word, he pulls you back inโtighter this time, holding you for longer, chin settling against your shoulder like heโs daring you to complain. โNow?โ
โ...Seven.โย
โSeven.โ His jaw ticks, and he still doesnโt let go. If anything, his arms tighten slightly, like heโs recalculating the entire situation. Apparently, youโve turned a hug into a problem he intends to solve. โWhatโs wrong with this one then?โ
โNothingโs wrong, itโs just not a ten.โย
โThen tell me what a ten requires.โ Heโs completely serious, still holding you, still refusing to break position, apparently prepared to stay like this until he gets an answer heโs satisfied with. โI donโt want a seven.โ
โYou canโt just refuse a scoreโโ You try to wriggle back, and he doesnโt budge an inch.
โWatch me.โ He adjusts his hold again, slower this time, slightly tighter, one hand settling flat against your back like heโs actually been thinking about where to exactly position them. โAgain.โ
โYouโre doing this in the hallway.โ
โIโm aware of the location.โ He is very clearly not planning to leave it. โScore it.โ
โ...Eight.โย
โNot ten?โ
โYou keep asking before I even finish reacting!โ You huff, arms still looped around him despite your protest.
โThen react faster.โ Heโs completely serious about winning a hug contest against a number you made up thirty seconds ago, which somehow makes the whole thing even funnier. He pulls you back against him again, in the very specific way that says heโs not leaving until this is settled. โI have all afternoon.โ
He then gives you a determined smile. โCome on, give me a ten.โ
๐๐๐๐๐
Heโs got you close in the quiet of the room, one hand resting lightly against your back. Thereโs nothing complicated about the hugโitโs just comfortable, cozy, the kind you can settle into without thinking. You rest your head against his shoulder.
โSeven out of ten.โ
His hand goes still. โ...Sorry?โ
โIโm giving this hug a seven.โย
He actually leans back to look at you. โYouโre grading me.โ
โWhy not?โย
โI wasnโt aware this required grading.โ He says it slowly, like heโs still deciding whether youโre serious or not. When your expression makes it clear that you are, his face shifts, like heโs looking over a chart that doesnโt quite make sense. โSo, seven out of ten. Explain.โ
โTechnically solid, just a little stiff.โ You tap a finger against his chest, as if marking notes on an invisible clipboard.
โStiff.โ He repeats the word like heโs not particularly pleased with the diagnosis. He doesnโt pull away, if anything, he holds you a little longer, clearly thinking it over like this is a problem he can actually solve. Then, he asks again, quieter; โTell me what to fix.โ
โThatโs not really the pโโย
โTell me.โ His hands stay steady against your back as he waits for an answer. โI donโt like being average at giving you comfort.โ
โItโs not a medical procedure, Doctor Zayne.โย
โEverything can be improved with the right method.โ He draws you back in, and this time the hug feels different. His hand settles more fully against your back, and he dips his head until his cheek rests against your head. โBetter?โ
โ...Nine.โย
โNot ten?โ
โYouโre overthinking it now. I can feel you overthinking it.โ You poke lightly at his side.
That earns the faintest huff from him, almost a laugh. Itโs quiet enough that you feel it more than hear it. โIโll want the notes later. In writing, if possible.โ
You blink up at him, half sure heโs serious. โYou want a hug rubric?โย
โI want to not be a seven.โ His arms settle around you again, like heโs already decided this is something heโll figure out. โHelp me get there.โ
๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐
Heโs got you tucked against the studio window, watching the half-full moon above the ocean. The whole thing feels soft and familiar, almost domestic, until you break the silence.
โEight out of ten.โ
He freezes. His hands stop halfway through whatever they were doing against your back. โDid you just rate me?โ
โMhm,โ you bite back a grin, watching his expression crumble in real time, before correcting, โyour hug, specifically.โ
โYou just rate my loving hugโฆโ He pulls back so quickly you nearly get startled, staring at you like youโve just delivered a devastating review of his entire body of work, โ...an eight?โ
โIt was good! Just not perfect.โ You hold your hands up in mock defense.
โNothing I do is an eight.โ He looks at you like youโve personally betrayed him and insulted his hugging skills. โIโm a ten minimum in every category, always, thatโs not ego talking, thatโs just factโโ
โSo prove it.โ You cross your arms, egging him on.
Thatโs all it takes. He pulls you right back in, arms tightening immediately, and before you can even react, he presses an audible smooch to your cheek with a smug little flourish. โThere. Bonus points.โ
โThatโs not part of a hug, thatโs cheating!โ You squirm, though you donโt actually pull away. How could you?
โItโs innovation.โ Another kiss lands at your temple, delivered with the confidence of someone adding one last stroke to a painting. โArtists donโt follow the rules.โ
โRafayelโโย
โShh, Iโm working.โ He sways you both slightly, far too pleased with himself, then drops a third kiss somewhere near your jaw purely because he feels like it. โRescore me.โ
โYou havenโt stopped touching me long enough for me to think.โย
โGood. Thatโs the strategy.โ He tightens his hold, cheek pressed against yours, making absolutely no effort to give you the space needed for an โobjective evaluationโ. โNow, was that an eight?โ
โMhmโฆ ten.โ
โWas that an eight, I hear?โ He pretends not to hear you.
โEleven! It was an eleven! Are you happy now?โย
โEcstatic.โ He finally loosens his grip, only to steal one more kiss at the corner of your mouth, grinning the entire time. โShouldโve started there. Wouldโve saved us both the trouble.โ
๐๐๐๐๐
He pulls you into his side without a word, arm slipping around your waist like heโs already decided thatโs where it belongs. Itโs easy and effortless, the kind of certainty that seems to follow everything he does, including a simple hug. You let your head rest against him.
โThis is nice... Seven out of ten.โ
Thereโs a beat of silence. โCome again?โ
โYou heard me. Seven.โ You keep your tone breezy, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.
โSo youโre reviewing me.โ He tilts his head down to look at you properly, and the smirk in his expression quickly gives way to something almost delighted, like he wasnโt expecting this, but heโs already decided heโs going to have fun with it. โDidnโt peg you for the type to grade a hug.โ
โSomeoneโs gotta keep you humble.โ You pat his chest twice, like closing a case file.
โBold assumption that you can.โ He doesnโt loosen his hold. If anything, his arm settles a little more firmly around you, casual and completely sure of itself. โSeven, though. What knocked off the points?โ
โYour hands are cold.โ
โNoted.โ His hands do not move. โAnything else, or was that the whole review?โ
โYouโre not even trying to fix it.โย
โDidnโt say I was trying to fix it.โ A low chuckle brushes your ear, completely unbothered. Thereโs something smug about the way he says it that makes you want to argue just to see where heโll take this. โIโm doing something better. My turn.โ
โYour turn for what?โ You narrow your eyes, already suspicious.
โTo review you.โ He tilts his head, looking you over like heโs already made up his mind. โGripโs a bit loose. You keep almost pulling away, like youโre hesitating.โ
โIโm not hesitating,โ and you tighten your arms around him as if to prove it.
โYou are.โ He hums casually. โSix. For now.โ
โYouโre supposed to be the one under review here.โ You huff, though you donโt loosen your hold either.
โWe can do both.โ He pulls you a little closer, chin settling on top of your head, perfectly comfortable there. โBesides, someoneโs got to keep the scoring honest. You gave me a seven with a complaint in the same breath. Numbers donโt add up.โ
โThey add up just fine.โย
โProve it.โ His voice drops, just enough to make it sound like a challenge. His arms donโt move, so you tighten your grip just to make your point, and for half a second he actually goes still, slightly caught off-guard before that familiar smugness returns. โThere it is. Eight, maybe. Getting warmer.โ
โYouโre not letting go either, you know. Youโre still a seven.โย
โNever said I would.โ He pats your lower back a few times. โKeep going. Iโve got time to wait for a ten.โ
๐๐๐๐๐
He wraps you up the second youโre close enough, one hand cradling the back of your head while the other rests warm against your back. Itโs the same hold you always seem to melt into, familiar enough that neither of you has to think about it anymore. You hum contentedly and mumble against his collar;
โTen out of ten.โ
โObviously.โ He shrugs it off, like youโre confirming something he already knew.
โWait, youโre not even surprised I gave your hug a rating?โย
โShould I be?โ He pulls back just enough to grin down at you, looking far too pleased with himself. โExperience over years, you know, like how long before you get squirmy and pretend itโs because youโre โbusy.โโ
โI donโt get squirmy.โย
โYou are squirming right now.โ
โThatโs different.โย
โSure it is.โ He pulls you back against him. Itโs obvious heโs done this enough times to know exactly what works, and heโs clearly not tired of it. โTen out of ten and no notes. Kind of a boring review, though.โ
You pull back just enough to give him a look. โExcuse me?โย
โYouโve given me the same score for months.โ His tone stays lighthearted with just enough complaint to make it obvious heโs fishing for something more interesting. โI want a challenge. Give me something to improve.โ
โYouโre asking me to critique a perfect score.โย
โIโm asking you not to let me get complacent.โ His eyes narrow with interest, the expression he gets right before he does something that is probably going to be both reckless and charming. โCome on. Surprise me. Whatโs the next level?โ
โI donโt know, variety, maybe? You do the exact same hug every single time.โ You shrug, only half expecting him to take the bait.
โSay less.โ He doesnโt even give you time to brace. He lifts you clean off your feet for a moment, spins you, then catches you again, pulling you in tighter and laughing at the surprised yelp that escapes you. โNew variant. Rate it.โ
โThatโs just showing off!โ You cling to his shoulders, breathless from the surprise of it.
โThatโs a ten with flair.โ He presses a kiss to your forehead, looking entirely too pleased with himself. โDonโt tell me you didnโt like it?โ
โ...I liked the original just fine.โย
โLiar.โ He settles back into that same familiar hold anyway, the one he knows works, arms loose and warm around you. โGive it a minute, and youโll be asking for the variant again by tomorrow.โ
You already know heโs probably right. You just arenโt going to give him the satisfaction of saying so.
Hope you enjoyed this one as much as I enjoyed writing it! โธ(๏ฝกห แต ห )โธ

i hate how much ai has taken the joy out of seeing something cool. you used to see something cool, like a really intricate drawing or a video of someone doing an insane skill or two animals doing something cute, and because there were no mental gymnastics involved in discerning whether or not it was 'real' you could sit there and have the joy of like, "wow! how did they do that! how cool is it that they made that! what a wonderful moment to have captured!" and now every time i see something remarkable i hate that i have to sit there and be like okay let me go frame by frame to make sure everything lines up. let me double check the page this comes from. let me scroll through the comments to make sure no one called out something i missed. like i want the joy of being able to trust someone else's creation back, please

There will never be another character like Blackwall Dragon Age. He's a Grey Warden. The first time you meet him, he saves you from being kirked. He's an idealist. He's a romantic. He's a war hero and a protector and a knight in shining armor. He's a liar and a bullshitter and a coward. He's a family man. He's traumatized by his family's tragedy and his own failures. He's a sports fan. He hates nobles. He's trying to impress nobles. His best friend is a lesbian half his age. He made a suicide pact with his coworker. He's a fuckboy. He genuinely likes women. He helps his friends get laid. He makes toys for children in his free time. He's a child murderer. He always lies about who he is. He always tells the truth about who he is. He gets psychoanalyzed by Varric without either of them realizing it. He fucks so loud it scares the horses. He idolizes courtly love. He's not a Grey Warden. He's every Grey Warden that ever walked on Thedas.
That one clip of Brennan Lee Mulligan in game changer saying "I can set my own standard for what success looks like, and it always looks like trying your best" has done more for me than therapy ever has
