After the adventure, everyone returned to their rooms.

Well, everyone except you.

That’s what made you originally stand out from the rest. The fact that you were an exception.

It started one day when you all returned from the Candy Canyon Kingdom and maple syrup was stuck all over your body. After attempting to remove it, you gave up trying yourself when nothing worked. Instead, you seeked out the ringleader of the circus; Caine, who appeared as soon as you called out his name. Based on the look on his face, it was clear he wasn’t expecting anyone’s company tonight.

It alarmed you, how quick he teleported right beside you. You arrived in the digital realm not long ago and couldn’t wrap your head around the concept of magic, so Caine felt like an anomaly. Something strange that you have never seen before. Therefore, his intense display of power left you stunned every time.

Caine noticed this, the way your jaw would drop slightly and how you stared up at him in complete awe, so naturally, he fed into it. Whether that was by being extra or throwing in a multitude of pizazz whenever you were nearby. He amped up his performance just for you. It was worth the attention you gave him.

Take now, for instance. He was practically rubbing his ability in your face, glitter bursting from the palm of his hand like it was easy.

“Youuuuuuuuuuuuu called?”

Caine battered his eyelashes as he zoned in on you, circling around like a predator would with prey, though the act itself didn’t carry any violent intent. He was just that interested in how good you made him feel. Caine couldn’t help but stare and get in your personal space. To him, you were an enigma.

“I did. I was wondering if you could help me clean up? I tried everything, and as you can see… nothing has worked.”

Upon hearing this, his gloved hand shot straight up to his lower jaw and he feigned deep thought. As for the upper part of his teeth, they all narrowed like an eyebrow would. He looked perplexed.

“Well, that’s odd! You’d think maple would be EASY to remove since it’s a liquid of… sorts. I mean, water’s relatively simple to clean up. Why wouldn’t THIS be?”

A giggle escaped you at Caine’s absurd sense of logic. You knew that’s not how science worked, but you didn’t correct him on it. Instead, you agreed with him for fun, not wanting to ruin the moment.

“Maybe you coded it together so well that it doesn’t want to come off?”

Caine gasped at your theory, “An astute observation, indeed! You’re definitely right. WOWIE, I truly shock myself with my own capabilities sometimes. Perhaps I should tone it down a notch?”

You eagerly shook your head, “Exactly. You’re just too good at your job, Caine. I don’t think you need to change anything.”

His breath hitched.

“Ah!”

A long pause stretched out between the two of you.

Why did everything suddenly feel awkward?

“Sorry, did I overstep?”

Caine cleared his throat as he stared at the ground, nervously twiddling his thumbs together before readjusting his bow tie. He chuckled, though it lacked the confidence he typically exerted.

“NO. Not at all! Goodness, no. It’s just… I wasn’t prepared– You’re so right! So good.”

The last part of that sentence fell short into a gasp, and on top of that, you were certain that Caine was blushing as well, unless you were just hallucinating from your sugar overload. You had Jax to blame for that. Did he have to provoke the NPC? You ended up swallowing more candy than medically recommended, and the thought of falling into another pond of chocolate made you feel nauseous.

“Ahaha… anyway, the syrup? I’m really tired and would like to sleep soon.”

Caine snapped his fingers before you could blink and you were immediately cured of your sticky situation.

“SORRY ABOUT THAT. My mind was elsewhere. For you see, I’m very busy coming up with new ideas for you and the others. It’s NO easy feat being the one in charge.”

You couldn’t argue with that kind of logic.

“I admire your ambition. Just remember to take breaks, okay? Otherwise, you’ll end up hurting yourself.”

Another pang shot right through his code. Caine coughed harder this time, desperately trying to clear the lump growing in his throat. He felt himself getting hot. Maybe it was because the circus lacked any air conditioning? How unprofessional of him. He took a mental note of adding something like that later.

“MHMMMMMMMMMMM, sure. Yep, I can do that. Take, uh… breaks.”

The room grew silent again. This time, you had nothing else to add, so you began to excuse yourself from the conversation, much to Caine’s dismay.

“You’re leaving? So soon?”

The question left his mouth before he could stop himself.

You didn’t seem to mind, and that only made him fixate harder.

“We’ll see each other again tomorrow morning, right? Knowing you, you’ve likely prepared another adventure already.”

You knew him?

He’d do anything to learn more about you.

“Mhmm,” The ringmaster whimpered as he waved you goodbye, seemingly at a loss for words. His legs dangled by floating around aimlessly, unable to carry the emotional weight he just endured.

What was that bizarre feeling, and why did it make him clutch at his chest?

“Disgusting,” Bubble appeared out of nowhere.
