In the Philippines, Senior High School students have felt stressed because the curriculum had too many subjects, repeated lessons from junior high, and does not have enough time to prepare for real-life situations. As someone who has gone the current SHS system, I honestly think the new curriculum is a much needed change since it focuses more on real preparation for college and our future careers.

One problem with the old curriculum was repeating lessons that didn’t seem connected to the specific strand students chose and weren’t useful in real life. Students had to study lots of subjects that didn’t match their career goals, which made everything stressful and useless. Instead of preparing students for college, it pushed them in different directions. The new proposed SHS curriculum fixes this by adjusting the subjects with the college programs students plan to take. Since the primary objective of secondary school is to prepare students for higher education, it is logical to prioritize their most essential needs.

After my immersion experience, I became aware of the shortcomings of the old curriculum. We didn’t have enough time to consider our career options because it felt rushed and overshadowed by academic tasks. It was stated in the new curriculum that it will make immersion longer, and I believe that is an important change. Students have more time to explore in real workplaces and more chance to discover their strengths and weaknesses, understand their chosen field, and figure out if it’s truly right for them.

The strengthened SHS curriculum includes real-life skills, digital literacy, practical knowledge, and critical thinking, which are helpful to equip students to become ready for college. These skills are needed, not just in college but also in the real world. Students nowadays tend to memorize lessons instead of applying their learning in real-life situations. This problem is exactly what the new curriculum addresses.

We can say that the proposed SHS curriculum is not flawless; there will be a lot of setbacks, but I believe that we need this significant change. By removing redundant subjects, enhancing immersion time, and teaching practical skills, it provides students with a more fulfilling learning experience. If implemented effectively with the help of different organizations, the proposed curriculum has the potential to make Filipino students ready equipped with skills and knowledge for the college and beyond.
