most people who meet riley are surprised when (if) they learn that riley is not her given first name. in fact, her legal first name is arabella, a family heirloom handed down from her motherâs side. from a young age, she always hated it. she started to go by riley as soon as she was able to articulate her wishes, much to the chagrin of her mother. riley wonders sometimes if thatâs part of why they ended up falling out so hard. to this day, nobody is allowed to call her by her first name without explicit permission.Â
riley was born in glasgow, scotland, the youngest daughter of a wealthy family that liked to polish their kids and show them off like trophies in a case. from a young age, she found the whole situation to be stifling. with two older sisters who always seemed to glide through life with practiced ease, riley was always left feeling like she was stumbling behind. anything she took a liking to, it seemed to be the opposite of what her parents wanted her to be doing. this would quickly become a recurring theme in her life.
pretty much as soon as she was able, riley took the first opportunity to get out of dodge â it was university for the hottest second, but she quickly figured out that it wouldnât last. not that she wasnât bright; in fact, she had always been smart, but reluctant to apply herself, and the bureaucracy and bullshit of higher education didnât sit well with her for very long.Â
after one failed semester at uni, riley took to exploring instead. first around her beloved scotland, and then out into the rest of the uk and europe. she discovered pretty quickly that if she smiled enough, she could land a job bartending just about anywhere â and her personal inclination towards drinking definitely counted as job experience instead of shenanigans, for once. though she spoke to them as little as possible, her parents tried to stay in touch through all of this; though their version of âstaying in touchâ wasnât so much worrying about her wellbeing as it was sending money to take care of whatever problems arose quickly and quietly â a disappointing, vagrant daughter was acceptable, apparently, as long as she didnât embarrass the family name too much.Â
( tw: drug abuse / overdose ) at the end of 2020, she was living in london when a particularly low period led to her getting into and then overdosing on cocaine. it was a close call, and when she woke up, disoriented in a city hospital, the first thing that greeted her was her motherâs disappointed face. with very little emotion, her mother informed her that rileyâs decision to throw away her life was her own problem, but now it was becoming a family issue â this is how riley learned about an unfortunately timed paparazzi picture of her being taken to the hospital, which quickly had her familyâs name plastered all over it in the papers. utterly embarrassed, her parents finally gave her an ultimatum: they would pay to send her to a rehab facility in america, far away from prying eyes who would recognize her family connections, on the condition that she wouldnât come back unless she was 100% sober. in the end, riley decided then and there that she wouldnât come back at all.Â
that conversation led her to a state of the art rehab/recovery facility in new york, where she spent six months getting to know the root of her drug addictions and learning to become a functioning member of society again. since getting out, riley hasnât spoken to her mother at all. her father has called a few times, and riley has assured him that she is, in fact, doing much better; but she wonât be coming home any time in the foreseeable future. somewhere along the way of discovering the art of life again, she made her way up the coast to maine. she hopped around a few small bars in small towns before ending up in moorbrooke.
