Now that I have seen Iron Lung a fourth time (thank you drive-in theaters 🙏) I wanna do a little talking about it, as well as pointing out things my friends and myself have noticed with each watch.
For starters. The cinematography. HOLY SHIT. And like...not not just the care and detail of the shots, but the way shots will fade into another shot perfectly. I'm talking like when Simon draws an arrow on the map and it perfectly transitions to the arrow of the sub. Or Simon drawing an X on the map and it perfectly transitioning to the tape X on the button. Or oh my god, I can't believe it took me four watches to notice, when he draws a swooping line on the map and it trasitions perfectly to a shot of him, but that line he just drew lines up with the wires hanging from the ceiling. OH MY GOD. And my absolute favorite shot, watching the arrow from an angle above and watching Simon walk back to go press the button through the relflection. I swear the cinematography alone gives me chills.
I probably shouldn't spend this whole post talking the cinematography though...
So some things my friends and I have noticed through our watches that I am always thinking of
The eye BEHIND the skeleton after Simon rams it
All the places the eye shows up in general, Ava, the porthole, the Xrays, Simon (multiple times), the blood, the eye in the blood realm. The eye is soooo prominent in this film
When Simon is being hauled up after initially finding the skeleton, there's a voice? I dont know if it's the ship systems or what, and I couldnt catch what it said, but amongst all the chaos, theres another voice it sounds like
When Ava is able to get in contact with Simon and we find out he's been down there three days, the initial lighting of that shot has vertical lines in the shadow making it look like Simon is in prison and almost solidifying to us that he will not be living to be released from those bars.
The SM-8 exploded outward...perhaps something busted out of it if you get what I'm saying.
The eel does have 2 voices, and looks like 2 skulls smashed together...because if it didn't exist before, it is presently taking on the face of 2 scientists.
When Simon begins talking to the eel for the first time, the camera at one point lands on the depth gauge, and in the green light, there is a red light, but there isnt a red light anywhere on the ship that I know of. This red light looks a little like a face.
The crack in the glass, Simon's tattoo, and the seedling in his bracelet all have the same shape.
That crack in the glass also splits the screen when Simon is talking with the eel the first time. He's on one side of the crack, and the speaker on the other.
The light, or anomaly, that is implied to be god/the light the eel is talking about, when on the x-ray, it looks like the shape of a person. And lowkey maybe its just me, but it looks like the shape of Simon when his arms are growing into the tree roots in the sub.
The eel's teeth look like ribs.
Theres a shot of the blood winding around a pipe towards the end, and to me it looks like how I imagine the eel winds around the sub.
Ava tells Simon two different passwords.
The first shot of actually focusing on blood and tree root growing on the inside of the ship had a white-ish mass in the center that, once again looks like the shape of Simon being "crucified"
The rips on Simon's sweater and his bruises and blood splatters are constantly changing which to me is a representation that time does not necessarily hold a linear essence to it in this ocean
When the eel is attacking Simon's sub for the final time, you can hear it screaming "IT IS LIVING" or something along those lines. And also it yells "WHY WON'T YOU STAY DEAD."
When the ship explodes, you can see tree roots and branches shooting out. The blood is human after all, and their bodies will become fertilizer for the last tree.
Ava's eye looks similar to the 'eye of god' and she sees Simon through a pinhole and essentially is in control of his universe...until she loses it
When Ava is panicking and crying, telling Simon it's worth it, she's freaking out because the eel is destroying her sub, as we can see from the xrays. The eel the destroys her sub, and as this happens Ava screams and the light on the speaker goes out as it goes silent. The silence is her death. And the blood that pours through the speaker is supposed to represent her and her death.
There is a hole or a patch on Simon's outer harness that's shaped like a little heart
Both of the scenes of Simon seeing the monster, his future self, parallels each other. The first time he's at the front of the sub and turns around just in time to see the creature hide behind the wall. The second time he steps out from behind the wall and sees the creature at the front of the ship, turning to look at him, and he quickly hides behind the corner
When Simon is trying to restart the engine, there are noises above and we see shadows moving above the hole as the sound of tape falls. But before the shadow of the tape falls, another shadow walks by
Sometimes when Simon is talking to the speaker. The camera focused on the speaker moves in a way that makes it look like the speaker is breathing
Anyways. I have sooooo many more thoughts and theories and just all around a deep fascination with this film. And now I need to go to bed because it's late and I'm getting old and need my sleep
