M and N are close in skin tone, but N has much more ashy/grey undertones, where as M has more golden undertones.

this has been a long time in the making but i am SO excited to finally be ready to kick off my dragon age for beginners series on twitch!! this is one of my all time favorite games, and if you’ve been wanting to branch out and explore other mainstream story/choice-based video games without buying the equipment to do so (or frankly slogging through the fighting mechanics), this series is designed for you!

gorgeous graphics [see header] from the landscape to the characters themselves

in-depth character creation + a shit ton of mods so we get that sweet 4K sims custom content look 

diversity!! gay and lesbian characters, trans characters, characters of color, indigenous characters, and more

will i like dragon age?

if you loved blades of light and shadow or the crown and the flame, this is right up your alley. think elves and dwarves and kings and queens, magic and politics and courtly intrigue, kissing and ballgowns and spies. game of thrones vibes. the good shit.

idk, i’m not super into fantasy…

ok same tbh BUT i made an exception for this, and here’s why: endearing characters with fleshed out backstories and personalities, choices that truly change the way the game plays out, voice acting done by the professionals (yes one of the companions is literally freddie prinze jr), and an epic found-family-saves-the-world storyline with just enough humor to make you forget how bad i am at fighting mechanics.

it literally takes a second to look at a work and decipher whether there is a problem or not and clearly the heartfelt posts about representation in fandom a few days ago mean nothing if you’re going to continue to support it

as for artists, if your first thought after seeing the new palette is “how is this going to affect my aesthetic/style” then you really need to reevaluate. skin tone isn’t something to take artistic liberty on. skin tone isn’t something set in canon that you can twist and make your own. the release of the palettes wasn’t a personal attack on anyone, just purely to set things straight

are you:

a dragon age fan (derogatory); or

It has meant so much to me to see this fandom romance a character with a skin tone like mine. To see that they can be part of a sweeping, epic romance. To see that they are characters who are desired, who are celebrated in gorgeous works of art and in beautifully crafted fanfiction. To see you spend hours creating headcanons and metas for them.


But I’d also like to talk about how it feels when they aren’t celebrated. When their skin tones are lightened, or when their features are changed to match Eurocentric ideals, what message does that send to members of the fandom like me? 


Are Nate/Nat and Mason/Morgan only worthy of your attention when they’re lighter? And are people who share their skin tone — people like me — not worthy of your love by extension?

Is it alright to tell people who share Felix/Farah’s skin tone, “sorry, you don’t fit my aesthetic” instead of challenge yourself to improve as an artist or editor? 


I do not intend to hurt anyone with this post, nor is not directed at a particular individual. I just hope that by knowing me, you’ll understand that white washing a character for color hurts the very real people in the fandom you talk to every day — the people who support you, who commission you, who care about you. 

It feels scary to share this part of myself here, but I hope doing so lets you know the the impact and the importance of having so many love interests of color.
