notes
— due to her past and events in her life, aurora finds it hard to allow herself attachments to anyone. though she hides this behind an aloof and easily amused demeanor, she does not allow anyone to know a single thing about her personal life in order to protect herself and her heart.
[ trigger warnings for neglect and grief ! ]
as far as her parents were concerned, charlotte quinn was known as ordinary in every way. erika quinn was a stay at home mother who tried her best to raise her kids, and she was fair to all of her children, but charlotte was the one that got the least attention. not a prodigy by any means, but smart enough to get by on her own wits, and that made all the difference to a woman who was juggling four other kids. bored with the life she was living, a then fourteen year old charlotte asked byron, her father and a defense lawyer, if she could work for him and do some small tasks in exchange for an increase in her allowance. he was reluctant, but his firm was small and quickly picking up more and more clients, so he agreed. charlotte was a quick study, she got through the paperwork in a breeze, learned the filing systems easy enough, and did everything her father asked of her. eventually that got boring too, and she started interacting with her father's clients. most were there due to minor infractions, but once in a while someone would come along with something bigger: theft, murder, things of that caliber.
byron told his daughter to steer clear, but charlotte was interested, and once charlotte gained an interest, nothing could stop her from learning everything she could about it. she talked and talked, and sometimes, she'd get the truth out of them. it started becoming pretty easy to spot the guilty versus the innocent. charlotte had already learned tips and tricks about body language from her father's conversations with her, and the rest she picked up in her own research. a year and a half into working with her father, byron peaked the interest of some very influential people. he was given an offer from a different, more prestigious law firm. the pay was a thousand times better, the hours easier to work around with a family in the picture. he didn't think twice about accepting it. suddenly, charlotte was out in her number one form of entertainment. she returned to living her life as a normal teen, got a regular job, and tried to let go of her fascination with people.
for a while, she was successful. her father's cases were now all strictly confidential, and charlotte honestly didn't want to know. the type of person who her father was representing now were rich scumbags with zero morality. once she learned of the more nefarious cases they dealt with, the people her father was openly representing, she tried to get him to quit, but he wouldn't hear it. the money was too good, the benefits were worth it; a man who once prided himself in being a good person now had other priorities to worry about. at seventeen, charlotte finally reached her breaking point. there was a big case all over the news, a multimillionaire who had ripped off thousands of his employees for his own gain. her father's firm was representing the man, and there was little doubt he was going to get away free; the people he'd hurt would never see justice. again, charlotte begged her dad to quit before he ruined his good name. and again, he didn't listen. byron told her to stop complaining, and to get with the program. this was his job, and she'd have to deal with it. she was, he told her, the most ungrateful child they had.
erika tried to console her, but charlotte was furious. she decided she was going to deal with it, but she was going to do it her own way. charlotte stole copies of everything her father had on the scumbag, and contact information of the people her father had represented in the past who she thought could help her. it wasn't easy, but charlotte devised a plan. she let the court case go as usual. the scumbag got away, innocent, and she let the hype die down. then, she set her plan in motion. it took months, and a dozen people she had promised a big pay off, but eventually they managed to find a way to get the asshole for everything he had. charlotte was surprised they'd managed to pull it off, but they did. except charlotte wasn't as careful in covering well, and not everyone in her co-conspirator group was loyal to her. she was betrayed, everything they'd done pinned on her; used as a scapegoat while the traitor fled with their portion of the money. it was only thanks to the kindness of some of the others, and her sister, orla, that she managed to escape the authorities.
her parents had mixed reactions to the knowledge. erika couldn't believe charlotte would do something like this. not her sweet, innocent daughter. not the child of hers that she'd never spent more than a few minutes with a day, if any time at all. she wanted to defend charlotte, but the evidence was incriminating. byron was less skeptical. having spent more time with her, he knew how her brain worked, and saw her rage towards the people he represented. but he didn't blame himself; according to him, everything charlotte had done was due to her own childish tendencies, her inability to handle the real world. when the news spread, becoming a huge media spectacle, byron very publicly disowned charlotte. he cleaned his hands of her and anything she did. hearing the horrible things said about her by her father throughout the press, charlotte was heartbroken. and she was angry. in her mind, the father whom had once had a good and caring heart was now no better than the people he represented. she knew that even if there was a way she could go back to her family without facing repercussions, she'd never want to be anywhere near him again. she'd rather be in a jail cell for the rest of her life.
charlotte begged her co-conspirators to help her become someone else. someone new. most of them backed out; she was just someone they'd helped out for a job, and they didn't want to get involved any further. only one pointed her in the direction of a hacker who might be able to help her disappear for good, until the chase for her died down. charlotte found herself meeting agustin palomo for the first time, and after some convincing, he helped her forge a new identity for herself in exchange for a cut of what she’d stolen. the girl fled the country that very week, but wasn’t done making a name for herself. curiosity got the better of her, as it had in the past, and she once more took to soaking up as much information as she could about the criminal underworld. it started with petty robberies, stealing small things, but she found that she liked the types of situations where she could trick people into giving what she wanted without actually taking it. she learned about stealing, about grifting, everything that came with it. when she got bored with one field, she quickly moved on to studying another. but she always returned to grifting, as it was the one that required interacting with people more than anything, and she loved that.
still keeping in contact with agustin, she's moved through various different aliases. the one that stuck time after time was aurora laroux. aurora was an only child, born to wealthy parents in the french countryside. parents who had died when she was fourteen and left her their entire estate. as aurora, she could do much of whatever she pleased, and soon enough that became her official identity.
as aurora, she realized one thing: if she was good among people, how good would she be in leading them? her first attempt had ended badly, but that had been when she was poor, inexperienced charlotte. now she was older, wiser, and could make better decisions. deciding to give it another go, aurora once more reached out to agustin. after a bit of effort, she roped him into helping her gain information for potential recruits and targets. the first target was easy enough: still bitter about her father, she made a point to go after one of the other clients of the firm her father was still working with. this time, the plant went without a hitch. they made millions, split the money, and went their separate ways. aurora had so much fun that she did it again with a different group, and then again, and again. until it became obvious that her success wasn't just luck, but her being dedicated till the end. the kingmaker was the name the authorities gave her, with how well her plans worked and for the fact that nobody could find out who was behind them. the people who worked with her out of respect, never revealed who she was, and it worked wonders to expand the kingmaker's reputation.
eventually aurora got kind of bored with that too. she didn't stop forming groups, but she moved on to something a little different: making groups with inexperienced criminals, and making them become the best of the best. after all, pulling a con off with professionals was easy, but with the untrained and uneducated? that was a new challenge altogether. the first few got off to a rocky start. too many young people being desperate to prove themselves, or prove that they didn't need to prove themselves. it took patience, and a lot of convincing, but she managed to make this a successes too. she did two or three jobs with the same groups of people, and when they were either good enough to be left on their own, or ready to be trained by an expert in their particular field, she let them go. they were her students, and she wanted what was best for them, whether it meant passing them off to the next person who had much to teach them, or letting them do their own thing.
it was during her third attempt that she met vetra for the first time. a thirteen year old girl who was angry at the world and wanted some revenge, vetra wasn't one of aurora's candidates for her new group of criminals, but someone caught in the middle of the con. the orphanage she was living in at the time was caught in a dispute with a land developer that wanted the rights to the area the orphanage was built upon, and vetra — already well on her way to being a hacking genius — managed to hack into this particular bastard's company and stick her nose into business that would get her hurt. aurora had vetra pulled out of the orphanage before any harm could come to her, explaining to her what was happening and why vetra needed to stop before she did more damage. when vetra finally listened, aurora allowed her in on the con on the condition that she not do anything dumb and just watch. vetra didn’t listen; she played around with the information she could, added in detail to aurora's plans that nobody had thought to add before. aurora was annoyed, but found herself growing fond. when the con was over, this scumbag being taken for everything he had, aurora told vetra that she could go back to the orphanage and live her life. vetra didn't want to go back. in fact, she threatened to expose aurora if she tried to make vetra go back. it shouldn't have been an effective threat but aurora saw the potential in vetra.
officially, vetra was considered a runaway from the system. unofficially, aurora gave vetra a new identity and made the girl her new protege. things between aurora and vetra were tricky. aurora was only twice vetra's age at this point, still in her late 20s, and not nearly as prepared to deal with raising a rebellious teenage girl. and vetra, for as much as she wanted to stick around to aurora, wasn't looking for a mother figure. vetra just wanted to be herself, without any obstacles getting in her way. they settled on an arrangement; vetra could do as she pleased, and aurora would let her. she'd pay for whatever expenses vetra had but she had to work to convince aurora of everything she was given, and she had to show that she was making an effort to learn what aurora was teaching. aurora wasn't going to be vetra's piggy bank, but she also wasn't going to let the girl go with no support.
vetra spent a lot of time coming in and out of aurora's life, not allowing herself to get attached to the older woman. she was still only a teenager, and barely that. aurora worried for her more often than not, but she didn't seem to enjoy being tied to one place for too long, and aurora wasn't going to try to chain her down. the day that vetra stopped contacting aurora, the woman knew something had gone wrong. they often went weeks without talking, but months passed and the dread grew. by the time six months came and went, aurora had no options and no idea where to start looking. it was a harsh blow to accept that vetra was gone, and aurora found herself responsible for it. she stopped her work entirely, letting the grief consume her.
a year after vetra’s last call, agustin came to find aurora. she was a wreck, barely holding onto the mask she wore so well. with his push, he got her back to doing what she was best at, telling her that he needed her help. agustin wasn’t a con artist, but he helped those in need, and aurora’s skills were something he had need of. knowing she couldn’t wallow in her misery forever, aurora agreed to keep going. there was no other choice.
