Gerry does not think he understands people very well, either, albeit for different reasons. He is about as human as they come—or maybe not quite, since the Eye still has a hold on him. But he is not an avatar, or whatever Agnes is, a literal embodiment of one of the Entities, which is perhaps a step up from an ordinary avatar. Or a step down, depending on how you look at it.
But he was not socialized well, kept close to his mother’s side, and was not put into a regular school where he would get to interact with his peers. While their circumstances are nowhere close, both Gerry and Agnes have this disconnect from other people, a distance they have been trying to close for their entire lives to no avail. And how ironic it is that this disconnect is the very thing that makes them relate.
He wonders if she ever gets Lonely in the same way he does. He reckons that is his second most substantial mark, and while he knows it can’t come to claim her, perhaps it does come along to tap her on the shoulder from time to time. He still runs the risk of being claimed by the Lonely himself because the Eye’s grip on him is not as secure as it could be. He knows what it is like to be on the outside looking in at other people, and he finds himself curious as to whether it ever affects her the same. He will have to find a more appropriate time to ask her about that.
When she turns to him with her eyebrows raised in surprise, he notes that it is the most emotion he has seen on her face in a long time—probably since the day they met. Part of him wants to tear his gaze away, to allow her some privacy to feel whatever she will, but a more prominent part tells him that he ought to watch, that it would be worse to turn away from it.
“I guess… I kind of get that,” he says, “the thing about only going along with what other people want from you.” Did it make her wrong to try and appease the cult that raised her? And if so, didn’t it make him bad for trying to appease his mother back in the day? He did all kinds of things that he would now consider awful for the sake of impressing her, and it took him years to sit back and realize that he wanted no part in it, after all.
“I’m glad you think so, though. Some things in the world should burn”—a pointed look down at the book, reduced mainly to charcoal and ash at this point—“but not the whole thing.”
"I thought it was what I wanted too," she admits quietly, and she cannot deny the way it still calls to her. The flames flood her veins and despite how she turned away from it, she cannot change the circumstances of her birth. Though, she supposes, no matter how she came into the world, once the entity has been invited in, there's no way to completely be cleansed of them. Not without the cold embrace of death.
Agnes sees it in him, the way he wrestles with the Eye but can never be completely rid of it. There's little hope for them, but maybe, if they keep at it, there can be some hope for others who hadn't felt the cruel and unwavering fingers of their patrons.
Her gaze returns to the book a moment after his does, and there's the ghost of a smile there. It's a small triumph, but it feels good all the same. "Yes. Some things deserve to burn," and if it's the only destruction she will let herself delight in, then she thinks that maybe isn't so bad.
"There are other things that this world would be better off without," she broaches the subject slyly, watching him carefully as she does. "You have to know whatever the Eye has planned for the Institute can't be good," it stood, so seemingly harmless, but Agnes isn't fooled - the Eye simply had patience other entities did not. Other than the Web, of course.

It had been the unspoken elephant in the room for some time now, a chasm that stood between them during these visits. Always there, but never acknowledge.
Livvy is only here because of Agnes; or maybe, Agnes is here because of Livvy.
Because it's naive to think that the Desolation did not have this in the works long before the noose tightened around her neck. Perhaps she was simply a domino that fell in order to knock over the next, rather than the game being reset as they assumed.
"I don't think there's a universe that could exist with both of us alive," the galaxy could only hold one sun at a time.

His gaze is heavy on her, but she ignores it and does not turn to meet his eyes. Agnes gets it; the need to watch, to pick apart a person with your eyes, breaking them down cell by cell until you reach an understanding. Only, she'd never quite managed to grasp it. Likely understanding people is something that will always be out of her reach, no matter how close she brushes. The matter of fact is, she isn't like anybody else, so no matter how hard she tries, she'll never get it.
It's not the first time he's taken her by surprise, and when she finally looks over to him, her brows are high on her forehead. It's her turn to stare, and after a moment, she decides she thinks he's alright too, but she doesn't vocalise it.
"I've lived a long time," she says instead, addressing his first impressions of her. "I've watched so much that I'd do the Eye proud," it's a thought laced with a sick sort of humour. "Everything I am is by design of others. It took all that time for me to realise it wasn't what I wanted," unlike the others, she didn't choose her patron, it molded her from birth, picking her out before she had even taken her first breath.
"I've spent decades watching. And I've decided I don't think this world should burn," not when then was hope.

There's something of a thread that binds them, different to what she and Gertrude had, but stronger maybe - chosen. The Web had orchestrated the link that bound her to the Archivist, this link had been one of their own makings. Once reluctant allies that now were too often by each other's side, a companionship built by design of their entanglement with the fearsome entities - but one of their own choosing, nonetheless.
So, it's little surprise to her when he follows. Once, he would have left her to her destructive glee, but now he stands behind her and watches. Even if he complains the whole way. They'd never shrug that aspect of their relationship off.
She nods at his recollection of pathology and how it intertwined with history and thinks it could be the reason the Rot had tried to claim her when she was so young. Disease had little to fear, ravaging entire villages and claiming even the healthiest, but fire cleansed all.
Agnes is quite for a beat longer as she revels in the orchestra of agony, and it's at times like these that she is reminded of who she was made to be at her core. That no matter how she longed for humanity it would always skip just beyond her reach, taken from her before she'd been cognizant enough to choose for herself. She wonders if the Cult ever stopped to think of the potential they had thieved from her, of how she little she was different from any of their other victims.
When she speaks, she chooses not to lie to him. "Nobody that can be saved," she felt their pain as much as she maggots, but for once, it doesn't stem for her, and she hopes the fire can bring them as much relief as it does her.
It isn't until the fire has truly taken and the house roars with it that she turns to him, eyes bright and cheeks flush, satiated by the suffering in a way she never allows herself to be anymore. Taking it from another entity is the only way she feeds these days, and so she goes long stretches with the need for it scratching her insides to bloody ribbons.
"Don't you feel better knowing that's gone from the world?" aka - told you so.

But she was so beautiful. She, she was tall, with long, straight, auburn hair and these eyes that, when they looked at you, it didn’t feel like she was seeing you so much as was trapping you. I never understood the phrase “like a deer in the headlights” until she looked me in the eyes for the first time.
