A faint hum leaves Isaiah in return, hands moving from behind his head to slink into the pocket of his hoodie. He gives a small shrug, a slow blink as he returns the stare.
"Sorry."
A lame apology, Isaiah thinks, but hes not sure what else to say in turn. Supposes its better than getting defensive. Baby steps. He scratches his nose a little.
"Wanna start over? I'm Isaiah."
A slowblink. Something like that stirred in Haku the memory of a purrloin doing the same to communicate good intent. Was that on purpose? Was Isaiah attempting to get him to relax? The whitehaired boy wasn`t sure.
"Sure, I don't see why not." But if you pull any weird stunts I'm outta here. Not said aloud, of course.
Haku shoved his hands deep enough into his pockets to hit the bottom. He couldn't escape any further, not that way at least.
"MnamesHaku." Mumbled. Good job Haku, what are you, five?
"Sorry. I mean, my name is Haku."
"I caught a venipede just yesterday and uh... she's very... clingy."
Yes, he is blinking twice.

Isaiah is good at putting up a front. Hes good at emptying himself, making himself unreadable. The second you have a tell is the second you get swallowed whole. It's not right. It's not fair for someone his age to be able to do that. But then survival rarely is.
"I'm pretty opinionated in general."
The ginger watches how the other teenager's body language changes, and in response Isaiah changes his. Uncrosses his arms, puts them behind his head nonchalantly, as he leans against a nearby post. It's like lying on a more subtle level. Isaiah's pretty good at lying.
"Till you break under the pressure." Eyebrows raise faintly with his own words, calm but still too knowledgeable somehow. "Everyone's got an achilles heel."
It seems like the other boy expresses more relaxation and confidence in response to Haku's. The teen cannot tell what the other guy knows that he doesn't, all he knows is that the ginger is at least portraying a semblence of selfconfidence. Haku wishes he knew how to fake it.
"Are you done patronizing me?" he snaps, shoving his balled hands deeper into his pockets until he hits the bottom. He feels the urge to avert his gaze, and instead chooses to fixate his stained-glass looking eyes on Isaiah's, eyebrows knitting together. Then his shoulders slump.
"It doesn't matter, okay? You don't know me, you won't know me. You don't need to worry or care. Can we not continue this?"
Eyes like steel seem to capture everything, as Isaiah stares back. The shift in expression, the calloused hands. His eyes swallow everything, like he's staring into the other boy's soul.
"Used to it doesn't make it alright," he replies, and there's knowing in his voice. A tone that someone who was sheltered shouldn't have.
"Used to it doesn't make it hurt less."
He's just quiet for a moment, scanning Isaiah's exterior and behaviour on his own, trying to ascertain wether the guy poses a threat to him or not. Haku knows definitely that he cannot beat the boy in a pokemon battle, his pokemon are simply too weak for that as of right now.
All he could do was leave if it gets too much. Admitting defeat and running away like the rattata he'd been called before. "You're awfully opinionated about my problems for someone who's talking to some random guy he only just met not even an hour ago." A statement more so than an insult or accusation. An observation. Haku's body grows a little more rigid, as though going into the defense. He doesn't like at all how Isaiah seems to be trying to read him like a pamphlet.
"It might not hurt less, but it's more bearable the more you're used to it."
The whitehaired boy rolls his eyes, if only so he doesn't have to maintain eyecontact. He bites his lower lip softly, trying to banish nervousness.
"It's FINE. It happens. I'll be okay. It doesn't matter."
"For something that's 'fine' you seem pretty upset over it."
A pointed observation, but the teenager is already wracking his brain. Is there anything he can actually do? Can he help in some way?
"You don't have to act tough you know."
Ugh, what is he, psychic?
Haku stares daggers at Isaiah, but doesn't say anything at first. A deep breath calms the shaking in his calloused, scarred hands and he withdraws them from the pockets of his worn jackets, leaving them hang in the open, as though to display he's fine.
" 'm not 'acting' tough. Seriously dude, I'm used to it. I'll live."
"... you know, you don't have to give me your real name."
They look at him. Careful. Ree takes another slow sip, before they put down the water bottle and raise their hands. Haku looks -- frightened. Like he's not all there. Ree swallows.
"Hey. Deep breaths. If I'm sayin' something I shouldn't, you can yell at me, okay? I'm sorry if -- if I'm bein' too nosy. I'm a nosy person. Can't keep out of trouble for the life of me."
They laugh a little bit, eyebrows crinkling.
"What name do you want me t'call you? It can be a fake name. I'll forget what your real one is, scouts honor."
The other kid raising their hands makes him take another step back, as though afraid of being touched. His shoulders rise, but with his attempts at controlled breathing and Ree's calm words he slowly calms down again.
"You didn't do anything. I'm fine." A curt response, and outright lie, one that Ree for sure can pick up on, but Haku doesn't even care. He stares at them, despondent at first, before seemingly returning to reality again. Shoulders slump in exhaustion.
"I don't... have a fake name or nickname. I've always been Haku."
Arms cross over Isaiah's chest, a faint hum escaping his throat as the ginger processes this information. It's like something fro a movie. Not something that happens to real people. A lot to process.
"Doesn't sound fine."
The whitehaired boy rolls his eyes, if only so he doesn't have to maintain eyecontact. He bites his lower lip softly, trying to banish nervousness.
"It's FINE. It happens. I'll be okay. It doesn't matter."

"Hm. No. But for the sake of this conversation... sure lets go with that."
"I'm talking about organized crime, dunce. Gangsters, mobsters, cultists, shit like that. I had... yeah, well, unfortunately I drew some unwanted attention earlier. It's fine."
Ree snorts. They pull out another bottle of water and uncap it, sipping on it... just how much food do they have in their bag, anyway?
"... it's not a metaphor."
People have said some fucked up things to them. The smile drops, at least for a moment, before they pick it back up and smile at Haku. No need to get into any of that -- move on to better topics. Seems like the guy is getting a little more comfortable. At least, he's eating enough that Ree doesn't have to worry about him dropping dead yet.
"My bad," they apologize. "I like causin' problems for people who deserve it. But I ain't saying you gotta. Bein' in Alola is like your little vacation, right? Make the most of it. Do whatever you want. That's what you're supposed to do on vacation... I think. Hey, you know, mind-your-own-business is a long name. You got a nickname?"
Not a metaphor. That's... kinda fucked up, yeah? Yeah. The boy swallows dryly at the suggestion, feeling reminded of some of the threats he'd himself experienced in life, especially back home in Unova. Haku's heartrate picks up a little at the memory of a furious dragon striking his back. Suddenly the flash of images before his mind's eye is gone, shut out his brain trying to protect him.
His hands shake. Some shallow, quiet breaths are taken before he forces himself to calm down from the flashback. A vacation? Was it? Or was it an attempt at escape?
"H-Haku. I'm Haku. Call me Haku."
"I literally have no idea what you're talking about."
"... I see, you're sheltered."
"Skill issue."
"Oh fuck off, you try dealing with having every fucking evil team on the planet have their executives and bosses play with you like you're a damn growlithe toy."
Once he sees Ree take a bite from their half of the candybar, he finally also eats his half, convinced they wouldn't eat anything they'd previously tampered with somehow.
"There's probably a lotta people that would help with that but like, I get it, I guess." That was how he made it to Alola, after all. Not that anyone would know. He'd stolen the plane tickets, and admitting to that could get him into serious trouble. Six pokeballs this person had, huh? They must be very strong. Haku couldn't help but entertain the intrusive thught. Downright almost smacked himself across the face to get rid of it.
"You'll make enemies no matter what you do. No one does anything for free. And you'll always bump into someone else's elbow wether you wanna or not." Matter of factly stated, dry voice portraying the 15 year old's mellow cynicism.
"Heh! You can say that again!"
He gets it. Ree's glad to meet someone their age who finally Gets It. They lean forward in their wheelchair, shadow wiggling. Seems like the gastly are excited, just like their charge is.
"Even when I try to mind my own goddamn business, I wind up on like, three people's shitlists," they snort, shaking their head. "It don't matter whenever I'm good or bad, these people want to see my head on a stick. Or my skull growing flowers."
They lean back again, folding their hands in their lap.
"So, mind-your-own-business, are you here to cause shit? Cause I can point you in the direction of people who deserve it."
What the fuck. Their shadow is moving? He feels some goosebumps creep across his skin, discomfort, fear even. A primal fear of the dark and what lurks within it. Gastly or not, a ghost's a ghost, and he didn't like ghosts one bit.
But he wasn't going to say that. Not yet anyway.
"Skull growing flowers? What a shitty metaphor. What are you, an amateur poet?" Of course there's ridicule in his voice, but apparently no active malice. Instead he's more probing. "I'm not a grunt anymore, Ree. I don't fuck with that 'do this to that person' business no more." Even though this reply IS a little snappy. A lot, actually. Seems like Ree accidentily touched a sore spot.

"You might as well be singing don't be suspicious."
"I feel like death, thanks."
"Because, like, number one, I'm not lookin' to be arrested just yet," Ree takes a bite out of their half of the candy bar, and they don't seem to be judging Haku on his suggestion of stealing. In fact, they've stolen plenty of other things before from people that didn't need or deserve things.
They take another bite and lick the chocolate off their fingers.
"An' two, I'm here. Unova is over there. I don't have plane money to go to Unova, get a pokemon, an' fly back here. Y'know?"
They kick back in their wheelchair and gesture to their belt. They've got six Pokeballs strapped on them.
"Besides, I've got enough goin' on right now. I don' need to make enemies from Unova."
Once he sees Ree take a bite from their half of the candybar, he finally also eats his half, convinced they wouldn't eat anything they'd previously tampered with somehow.
